In recent years an increasing number of urban artists have turned towards the countryside in an attempt to revive rural areas perceived to be in a crisis. The vantage point of this book is the Bishan Commune. In 2010, Ou Ning drafted a notebook entitled Bishan Commune: How to Start Your Own Utopia. The notebook presents a utopian ideal of life based on anarchist Peter Kropotkin’s idea of mutual aid. In 2011 the Commune was established in Bishan Village in Anhui Province. The main questions of this book thus revolve around how an anarchist, utopian community unfolds to the backdrop of the political, social and historical landscape of rural China, or more directly: How do you start your own utopia in the Chinese countryside?

Book excerpt: This thesis examines two socially engaged art (SEA) projects while focusing on their implementation and representation: Bishan Project (2011-2016) initiated by curators and activists Ou Ning & Zuo Jing, and Qiuzhuang Project (2013-2015) by artist Li Mu. Chewing over the concept site-specificity, this thesis unfolds how the selected projects traveled through transformations in multiple dimensions, which involve the physical space, public participations, institutional conditions, artists’ identities, and critical discourses. The continuous practice of SEA in China during the recent two decades has urged a new perspective to read the Chinese contemporary art history, which highlights the artists’ consciousness of reflecting and acting upon the changing social landscapes as well as aggravating social problems, for which the urban- rural relationship is a vital factor. As direct interventions to the very scene were more frequently adopted by artists and cultural workers, they have challenged the ideology and methodology of contemporary art practice by reshaping the roles of artworks in accordance with different contexts, which, subsequently, paved the way for an alternative appraisal system for art values and aesthetics. Observing that the primary SEA projects are exhibited globally in diverse formats, this thesis also attempts to establish a conversation between local practice and global awareness, which may help with the advancement of knowledge production in the realm of global art history.

Book excerpt: The Minjian Avant-Garde studies how experimental artists in China mixed with, brought changes to, and let themselves be transformed by minjian, the volatile and diverse public of the post-Mao era. Departing from the usual emphasis on art institutions, global markets, or artists' communities, Chang Tan proposes a new analytical framework in the theories of socially engaged art that stresses the critical agency of participants, the affective functions of objects, and the versatility of the artists in diverse sociopolitical spheres. Drawing from hitherto untapped archival materials and interviews with the artists, Tan challenges the views of Chinese artists as either dissidents or conformists to the regime and sees them as navigators and negotiators among diverse political discourses and interests. She questions the fetishization of marginalized communities among practitioners of progressive art and politics, arguing that the members of minjian are often more complex, defiant, and savvy than the elites would assume. The Minjian Avant-Garde critically assesses the rise of populism in both art and politics and show that minjian could constitute either a democratizing or a coercive force. Book excerpt: This book contains analysis of different domains of contemporary art in China seen through the lens of the epistemological changes described in China Pluperfect I: Epistemology of Past and Outside in Chinese Art. It first looks at the concept of “ink art,” describing how it meant different things to different people in the former colony and how these different meanings came to determine certain institutional choices made at the beginning of the 21st century. The following chapters are dedicated to issues related to the urban and rural contexts for art creation in Mainland China and Hong Kong. One chapter observes the ups and downs of the representations of cities in the history of the People’s Republic of China and how they have defined a certain idea of culture. Another looks at how Chinese cities have been exceptional centers of art creations over the last thirty to forty years through the example of Shenzhen where a vibrant art scene, albeit closely connected to Hong Kong which has become a major art hub in the last two decades, has developed. The following is dedicated to the changing fortunes of art making in the countryside, observing how institutions in the Mainland and in Hong Kong have supported these practices very differently. Frank Vigneron finally considers how the different speeds of globalization, slow in the past and fast today, have determined some of the issues of past and outside in the present, particularly in the context of socially engaged art in both the Mainland and Hong Kong.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines how two different paths of folk art interact, entangle, and cooperate with contemporary art in China. One of the paths concerns the implantation of folk art elements into the form and expression of contemporary art practices. A majority of individual artists including Shengzhong Lu are contributing to the thriving trend of the new folk. The other path is through village-based rural reconstructions, where artists localize contemporary art by incorporating rural locality into their creations and reframing the demands of traditional crafts as applied to modern, everyday life. Using the practices of Bishan Commune Project and Yangdeng Art Cooperative as examples, I will analyze the issues and insights arising from their process, and how contemporary artists intervened into rural spaces. What is the difference between modernizing folk art in a contemporary art venue on the one hand, and, on the other, constructing contemporary practices in a rustic space? What outcome does each of them distinctively lead to? Is there a balancing point that we can find, one where contemporary art and folk art can make appropriate concessions in order to fit each other? Furthermore, why did Chinese contemporary artists make a turn toward nostalgic folk culture? Investigating these questions contributes to the understanding of how old folk art is perceived today, and what kinds of underlying sentiment are reflected here through such integration. It seems that this phenomenon reveals the hidden tide of root-searching—a nonstop tide that goes back and forth throughout the passage of time.

Book excerpt: Two contemporary Chinese artist collectives, Long March Project (LMP, formed in 1999) and Polit Sheer Form Office (PSFO, founded in 2005) posit themselves in both the contemporary Chinese and international art scene, as conducting something akin to "socially engaged art practice." This thesis attempts to read their practices as emanating from the artists' political and social experiences and critically observes how explanatory frames transfer between cultures. Through a wide range of research methods, including literature reviews, interviews with artists and field research, this thesis examines the evolution of interests, practices and terminologies as collective members grew up at the tail end of the Cultural Revolution, were educated locally and studied internationally, in England and Germany, being exposed to artistic responses to end-of-century political events there. It shows how members professionally intersected with national and international organizations and politics, working as artists, writers, critics and gallery administrators. It tracks them and their work as they thus gained standing individually, joined forces and then collaborated, all through periods of further significant transitions in Chinese society. In conclusion, a critical evaluation discusses how both groups' collective practices are brokered and present themselves, in Chinese and international, cultural and political contexts.
