In the Middle Ages, more than merely thinking with intensity, it was a religious practice entailing utter receptiveness to the divine presence. Contemplation is widely considered by scholars today to have been the highest form of devotional prayer, a rarified means of experiencing God practiced only by the most devout of monks, nuns, and mystics. Yet, in this groundbreaking new book, Eleanor Johnson argues instead for the pervasiveness and accessibility of contemplative works to medieval audiences. By drawing together ostensibly diverse literary genres—devotional prose, allegorical poetry, cycle dramas, and morality plays—Staging Contemplation paints late Middle English contemplative writing as a broad genre that operated collectively and experientially as much as through radical individual disengagement from the world. Johnson further argues that the contemplative genre played a crucial role in the exploration of the English vernacular as a literary and theological language in the fifteenth century, tracing how these works engaged modes of disfluency—from strained syntax and aberrant grammar, to puns, slang, code-switching, and laughter—to explore the limits, norms, and potential of English as a devotional language. Full of virtuoso close readings, this book demonstrates a sustained interest in how poetic language can foster a participatory experience of likeness to God among lay and devotional audiences alike.

Book excerpt: Zealots for souls draws attention to the impact of the Observant reforms within the Order of Preachers, and ambitiously stirs up a broad scope of questions pertaining to the institutional narratives produced within the order between c. 1388 and 1517. Through the narratives and the forms of remembrance they fostered, the author traces the development of contemporary characteristics of the Dominican self-understanding. The book shows the fluid boundaries between the genres (order chronicles, convent chronicles, collective biographies), highlights the interplay between the narrative and the intended audience, addresses the complex question of authorship, and assesses the indebtedness of 'modern' (printed) narratives to older chronicles or biographical collections. The book demonstrates that the majority of the extant institutional narratives were written by Observant Dominicans, who strived for the internal reform of their order. They wrote history to justify their own reform agenda and therefore produced invariably partisan chronicles. The work's method is widely applicable and contributes to further reassessment of institutional narratives as sources for the analysis of religious and intellectual transformations.

Book excerpt: Thomas Netter of Walden (c. 1374-1430) was a Carmelite friar, royal confessor, diplomat, religious superior, and theologian. His only extant theological work, the Doctrinale antiquitatum fidei catholicae ecclesiae contra Wiclevistas et Hussitas, was written with the purpose of combating the errors of Wyclif and his followers. For this reason, Netter's name and work are familiar mainly to those engaged in the study of Lollardy. Outside this field, Netter is almost unknown today, yet in his lifetime he was a highly regarded churchman who, it was said, could have had the pick of any diocese in England. From his death in 1430 until the middle of the eighteenth century Netter was a much-quoted and copied author whose exposition of Catholic teaching on subjects such as the Church, religious life, and the sacraments proved useful to many Counter-Reformation polemicists and apologists. This book is the first survey of the whole of the Doctrinale and it argues that there is more to Netter than anti-Lollard polemic. The author examines the principal topics in Netter's work -God, humanity, Christ, the Church, religious life, prayer, the sacraments--and he makes the case that there is a definite plan which links the various parts of the Doctrinale into a whole giving it a certain theological unity. The Very Rev. Kevin J. Alban, O. Carm. is Bursar General of the Carmelite Order. He read history at Balliol College, Oxford; he also holds degrees in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University and Catholic University Leuven, and a doctorate in church history from the University of London.

Book excerpt: The 'Festial' is a collection of sermons de tempore and de sanctis compiled by the Austin canon, John Mirk, probably around the late 1380s. It circulated widely in manuscript, undergoing one recension and one significant revision, of which the Advent and Nativity sermons were edited as MET 13. It was one of Caxton's earliest editions, printed first in 1483 (STC 17957) and again, in a different edition, in 1491 (STC 17959). Both editions were issued in conjunction with the 'Quattuor Sermones' (MET 2), catechetical and penitential material clumsily accommodated into four preaching sermons. Between the two editions, however, two new feasts had been licensed for celebration, the feasts of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (6 August) and the Holy Name of Jesus (7 August). At the end of his 1491 edition Caxton added sermons for these two new feasts, as well as a sermon for the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin (2 July), licensed for the province of Canterbury in 1480. To these three new sermons he appended the 'Hamus Caritatis', a brief treatise on the Ten Commandments of the Old Testament and the Two Precepts of the New Testament. The latter appears to stem from the Bridgettine monastery of Syon Abbey, and it has been argued that the sermons themselves may have the same provenance. The sermons and the 'Hamus Caritatis' have not previously been edited, despite their significance for our understanding of the evolution and transmission of the 'Festial'. This new edition (based on the 1491 edition) includes a Commentary and an Introduction that discusses the printing history of the 'Festial', the provenance and content of the sermons and 'Hamus Caritatis', and the Syon connections of the 'Quattuor Sermones'.
