No doubt I should apologize for undertaking work of this nature. A simple statement of the case will, I trust, make it plain to all why I have taken up this study. For a number of years we have had constant inquiries at the University for some literature on the birds of the state. As time went on these became more numerous but there was no one to take up the subject. Being the curator of the museum I volunteered my services five years ago, and the board have been very generous in granting me assistance. While I make no pretense at being an ornithologist, I have always been deeply interested in the birds, and at one time when a young man did spend considerable time in studying them. Upon taking up the work there were three avenues open from which I could secure data: 1, the published reports pertaining to the birds of the state. 2, observations of ornithologists or collectors in the state that had not been published. 3, to make a collection of skins, and secure as much data as possible first hand. While there was considerable material available under the first and second divisions, yet there was a wide field that had not been worked, and a great deal of valuable information to be secured. A collection was immediately started and with the valuable assistance of Chas. W. Gilmore, who was a student at that time, but at the present is in the department of palaeontology of the Carnegie Museum, rapid progress was made. The collection at this time numbers a little less than 600 skins; but in many instances there is but a single skin representing a species. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wyoming Birds: Ana Their Value to Agriculture This bulletin is the outcome of a survey conducted by the Department of Zoology of the University of Wyoming for the purpose of ascertaining whether the balance of nature has been disturbed as more and more of the territory of the state has come under cultivation. It was thought that the changing conditions in the state, including increased raising of grain and planting of shade trees, would enable more birds to find food and suitable nesting places than formerly. The birds seemed as likely to be affected as any group of animals and the extensive data collected at an earlier period seemed to furnish a basis for comparison. Mr. Walker, who had had experience in collecting and who is now in the government service, was employed to assist with the work of the survey. He has spent two summers in the field collecting and has brought together all available data from former collectors in the state. Letters were also written to prominent citizens of Wyoming in regard to the abundance of birds now as compared with ten years ago. The results of the work of collectors and the observations of citizens all indicate that many birds are on the increase, especially those which live partly or wholly upon seeds or insects and which are consequently of most benefit to farmers in the control of insect pests and weeds. Old residents of the state, and collectors whose experience extends over a period of several years, are almost universally of the opinion that certain birds are much more abundant now than formerly. In their replies to circular letters sent out, they have frequently specified the species which have been affected in this way. Book The Birds of Colorado Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Birds of Colorado Classic Reprint written by Wells Woodbridge Cooke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Colorado The notes on migration given in the following table are designed to show the different time at which the same species of birds arrive at different places and altitudes in Colorado as compared with the time of their arrival in the same latitude farther east and at a lower altitude. St. Louis, Mo., is thirty miles farther north than Fort Lyon, Colo., and one hundred and twenty miles south of Loveland, Colo. Hence, according to latitude, the birds should arrive in St. Louis about the same time as at Fort Lyon. But it is found that in fact they reach St. Louis on the average about twelve days before they appear at Fort Lyon. The dates Of arrival seem to indicate an aver age difference Of six days between Fort Lyon and Loveland. The distance between these two places is one hundred and fifty miles, or an average movement for the birds of twenty-five miles per day. This agrees quite closely with the average of twenty-eight miles per day that was found to be the usual speed of migration in the Mississippi valley. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wyoming Cottage Poems: A Collection of Religious Pieces It's the Rock of all ages - to come, and that's gone; It lies Where mankind may all see it, With a halo all round, as bright as the sun It's the sun of the World, and will free it. And there you may hide, while life it may last, If pure be your heart and your feeling; It's the same at this day, as in time that is past, And still grows up that balm of sweet healing. There's not a hole nor a clift around the sweet place, But is planted with balm that so pleases; But the plant that so luxuriantly grows, called Grace, Crowns the top of the Rock called Jesus. No tempests can blast, nor no chilling Wind Wither one leaf, whate'er be the season; Today and each hour its virtues can bind, The soul in these joys that's so pleasing. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Generation X and Microserfs, comes the absurd and tender story of a hard-living movie producer and a former child beauty pageant contender who only find each other by losing themselves. Waking up in an L.A. hospital, John Johnson is amazed that it was the flu and not an overdose of five different drugs mixed with cognac that nearly killed him. As a producer of high-adrenaline action flicks, he's led a decadent and dangerous life, purchasing his way through every conceivable variant of sex. But each variation seems to take him one notch away from a capacity for love, and while movie-making was once a way for him to create worlds of sensation, it now bores him. After his near-death experience, John decides to walk away from his life. Susan Colgate is an unbankable former tv star and child beauty pageant contender. Forced to marry a heavy metal singer in need of a Green Card after her parents squander her sitcom earnings, she becomes the alpha road rat. But when the band's popularity dwindles, the marriage dissolves. Flying back to Los Angeles in Economy, Susan's plane crashes and only she survives. As she walks away from the disaster virtually unscathed, Susan, too, decides to disappear. John and Susan are two souls searching for love across the bizarre, celebrity-obsessed landscape of LA, and are driven, almost fatefully, toward each other. Hilarious, fast-paced and ultimately heart-wrenching, Miss Wyoming is about people who, after throwing off their self-made identities, begin the fearful search for a love that exposes all vulnerabilities.
