Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Devonshire The exciting cause of this handbook must be looked for in the omission of other Devonshire Naturalists to provide a book of reference on the Ornithology of our County; an omission that may perhaps be accounted for, by the seriousness of the undertaking. The great size of the county, and the large quantity of published notes to be explored, rendered the completion of the task more difficult than I had at all anticipated. Accordingly I thankfully availed myself of the friendly co-operation of the Rev. H. A. Macpherson, who, since the beginning of the present year, has laboured assiduously at the improvement of the text. I have received the sympathetic support of many other naturalists, and tender my grateful thanks to all whose names are mentioned in the text. Though it is impossible to enumerate them here, I can not but express my special obligations to the Rev. M. A. Mathew, Mr. H. E. Rawson, Mr. Mitchell of Tavistock, Dr. Elliot, Mr. Nicholls, Mr. J. H. Gurney, and the Rev. G. C. Green of Modbury, for assistance received. I am, myself, solely responsible for the revision of proofs, and claim the kind indulgence of critics for country printers. The classification and nomenclature adopted are those of Mr. Howard Saunder's list of British Birds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Somerset Hills My aim in writing this book has been to gather together the facts observed by me concerning bird-life in the Somerset Hills. I have used only the common names of the birds, except in the complete list in Chapter XIII, where the scientific names are also given. Whatever I shall attain by the writing of this book, I owe to the help and encouragement of my Mother and Father. I am greatly indebted to Mr. C. William Beebe for his valuable criticism and advice. I also wish especially to thank Miss Lilian G. Cook for her great interest and assistance in my bird-work. The colored plates are the work of Mr. Chester A. Reed. Book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint written by Margaret Coulson Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings Since permanent interest in any subject cannot be awakened through occasional lessons, it is believed that much profit will come from a few weeks' continuous read ing along a single line, - reading which will create a love for the beautiful through understanding. Ignorance closes the door to much of our best' literature, which can be interpreted only through a sympathetic familiarity with nature. Color, sound, and movement are always attractive to childhood, and nowhere can they be found in such pleas ing combination as in the bird world. The study of its busy little inhabitants in their natural environment will not only add pleasure to the walks of the child, but will help him to a knowledge of the adaptation of all life to its surroundings. It will also lead to the intelligent appreciation of litera ture and music. Since the birth of time the birds have inspired poets and musicians. They have also given the keenest pleas ure to countless thousands who have never attempted to express what they felt. To interest a child in these guests of our groves, - these feathered entertainers who are also workers in our fields and orchards, - is to put him in possession of a wellspring of interest as enduring as life itself. Book The Sportsman s British Bird Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sportsman s British Bird Book Classic Reprint written by R. Lydekker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sportsman's British Bird Book The illustrations, which speak for themselves, are absolutely true to nature, having, in the great majority of instances, been photographed under the personal superintendence of Mr. Rowland Ward from specimens mounted at his studios in Piccadilly for this particular purpose. A considerable number of these specimens have been pre sented by Mr. Ward to the Natural History Museum, where they are exhibited in the British Saloon at the end of the Bird Gallery. A novel feature is the omission of the names of authorities and Observers of the facts recorded in this volume, many of whom are unknown to the general public. This is justified by the circum stance that when a statement has once been published it becomes public property. In certain books on the same subject it has been attempted to draw a distinction between birds which can properly be regarded as British and those which cannot lay a claim to such a privilege. Any such distinction is, however, manifestly an impossibility, and all the species are accordingly treated in serial order, although such as are mere stragglers are not accorded insets of their own in the text. The introduction of a certain number of technical terms relating to the plumage, such as wing-coverts, primary and secondary quills, etc., is unavoidable. The meaning of these - as well as of other terms used in scientific ornithology - will, however, be made apparent at a glance by the diagrammatic sketch of the topography of a bird's plumage on page xviii. In future editions, should such be called for, it will be the special aim of both the publisher and author to keep the work up to date. Book Wanderings in Devon Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wanderings in Devon Classic Reprint written by William Henry Hamilton Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Devon Before us rises the great red Haven Cliff, and the giant mass is reflected again in the glassy depths of the transparent Axe, that moves slowly along at its foot, pouring its limpid tribute, a few yards further on, at the "very smaul gut" of harbour - where now as of old "come in smaul fischar boats for socour" - into the great briny hand of Neptune. A leisurely stroll across the expanse of beach, a passing glance up the main street of Seaton, and we halt at the other extreme end, where the stupendous and beautiful White Cliff rears itself before us with a sort of implied question as to our further progress this way. Singularly handsome in outline, a very beau ideal of the famed English white cliffs, it is composed of dazzling lime-stone, rifted into large block-like masses, some fallen portions of which lie in huge debris of confusion at its base, where, about and between, the waves hiss and churn themselves impotently into spray, whiter than the barrier that challenges their progress. Overhead, a bevy of sooty choughs are darting out and in from numerous "coignes of vantage" near the apex, chattering noisily, - while at some distance below, in mid-air, a solitary gull sweeps slowly on in grand and noiseless equipoise, his long wings glancing in the sunlight. A friendly winding stair reveals itself a short space off, and up this we carefully clamber, emerging at the top into the narrow lane leading from Seaton to Beer. Could he really be in earnest in asking the ques tion, or did he only mean to chaff me and test my knowledge of bird life? For I had just been tell ing him of my studies in ornithology. But the nonplussed expression on his face showed that he actually did not know the name of the bird, and so I answered, avoiding a patronizing tone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Birds There is a certain quiet bit of land, just where two midland counties meet, that is in winter a favourite resort Of the fieldfares. There they find all they need - the hedges are usually bright with hips, and with the darker crimson berries of the hawthorn the fields are all pasture-meadows, and the grass is tufty and full of insects; a little stream winds snake-like through the fields, hidden by an overarching growth Of briar and bramble. NO well-worn path crosses these meadows, and you may count on being undisturbed if you sit for a few minutes, to enjoy the winter sunshine and.
