Book Biological diversity of the Minnesota caddisflies Insecta Trichoptera

Download or read book Biological diversity of the Minnesota caddisflies Insecta Trichoptera written by David C. Houghton and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains illustrations, statewide abundances, distributions, adult flight periodicities, and habitat affinities for all of the 277 known Minnesota caddisfly species. Many species, especially within the long-lived shredder families Limnephilidae and Phryganeidae, have decreased in distribution and abundance during the past 75 years, particularly those once common within the Northwestern and Southern regions. Many species now appear regionally extirpated, and a few have disappeared from the entire state. This loss of species in the Northwestern and Southern regions, and probably elsewhere, is almost certainly relatd to the conversion of many habitats to large-scale agriculture during the mid-20th century. With baseline data now in place, any future changes to the Minnesota caddisfly fauna can be evaluated with much greater confidence and precision.

Download or read book The Rivers of Greece written by Nikos Skoulikidis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides essential information on the origin and evolution of Greek rivers, as well as their ecological and anthropogenic characteristics. The topics covered include geomythology, biogeography, hydrology, hydrobiology, hydrogeochemistry, geological and biogeochemical processes, anthropogenic pressures and ecological impacts, water management – both in the antiquity and today – and river restoration. The book is divided into four parts, the first of which explores the importance of rivers for ancient Greek civilization and the natural processes affecting their evolution during the Holocene. In the second part, the hydrological, hydrochemical and biological features of Greek rivers and the unique biogeographical characteristics that form the basis for their high biodiversity and endemism are highlighted, while the third part comprehensively discusses the impacts of environmental pollution on the structure and function of Greek river ecosystems. In turn, the final part describes the current socio-economic factors in Greece that are affecting established water management practices, the application of ecohydrological approaches in restoring fragmented rivers, and the lessons learned from restoring aquatic ecosystems in general as a paradigm for understanding and minimizing anthropogenic impacts on water resources, at the Mediterranean scale. Given the breadth and depth of its coverage, the book offers an invaluable source of information for researchers, students and environmental managers alike.

Book Biogeography and Plate Tectonics

Download or read book Biogeography and Plate Tectonics written by J.C. Briggs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-08-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One needs to look at only a small portion of the enormous literature on plate tectonics published in the last 15 years to realize that there are many differences between the various reconstructions that have been presented. It becomes obvious that, although there is a general agreement about the presence of an assembly of continents (a Pangaea) in the early Mesozoic, there is considerable disagreement among earth scientists as to the configurement of the assembly and the manner and timing of the subsequent dispersal. While the revolution in geophysics was taking place, systematic work in paleontology and neontology was being carried out. This book is an attempt to incorporate the biological evidence into the theory of plate tectonics. The author traces the changing relationships among the various biogeographic regions and demonstrates how such changes may often be correlated with the gradual geographic alteration of the earth's surface. He analyses recent information about the distribution of widespread groups of terrestrial and freshwater vertebrates, invertebrates and plants, and discusses the biogeographical effects of the movement of oceanic plates. It is particularly important to obtain dependable information about certain critical times in the history of continental relationships. We need to know when the terrestrial parts of the earth were broken apart and when they were joined together. The present investigation makes it clear that we cannot depend entirely on evidence from plate tectonics nor will purely biological evidence suffice. This book thus provides much of interest to systematists working on contemporary groups of plants and animals, paleontologists, evolutionary biologists, and professors teaching courses in biogeography.

Book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects

Download or read book Biology of Blood Sucking Insects written by Mike Lehane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood-sucking insects are the vectors of many of the most debilitating parasites of man and his domesticated animals. In addition they are of considerable direct cost to the agricultural industry through losses in milk and meat yields, and through damage to hides and wool, etc. So, not surprisingly, many books of medical and veterinary entomology have been written. Most of these texts are organized taxonomically giving the details of the life-cycles, bionomics, relationship to disease and economic importance of each of the insect groups in turn. I have taken a different approach. This book is topic led and aims to discuss the biological themes which are common in the lives of blood-sucking insects. To do this I have concentrated on those aspects of the biology of these fascinating insects which have been clearly modified in some way to suit the blood-sucking habit. For example, I have discussed feeding and digestion in some detail because feeding on blood presents insects with special problems, but I have not discussed respiration because it is not affected in any particular way by haematophagy. Naturally there is a subjective element in the choice of topics for discussion and the weight given to each. I hope that I have not let my enthusiasm for particular subjects get the better of me on too many occasions and that the subject material achieves an overall balance.

Book Global Climate Change and Freshwater Ecosystems

Download or read book Global Climate Change and Freshwater Ecosystems written by Penelope Firth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global climate change is a certainty. The Earth's climate has never remained static for long and the prospect for human-accelerated climate change in the near future appears likely. Freshwater systems are intimately connected to climate in several ways: they may influence global atmospheric processes affecting climate; they may be sensitive early indicators of climate change because they integrate the atmospheric and terrestrial events occurring in their catchments; and, of course, they will be affected by climate change. An improved predictive understanding of environmental effects on pattern and process in freshwater ecosystems will be invaluable as a baseline upon which to build sound protection and management policies for fresh waters. This book represents an early step towards this improved understanding. The contributors accepted the challenge to assume global warming of 2-5oC in the next century. They then explored the implications of this scenario on various freshwater ecosystems and processes. To provide a broader perspective, Firth and Fisher included several chapters which do not deal expressly with freshwater ecosystems, but rather discuss climate change in terms of causes and mechanisms, implications for water resources, and the use of remote sensing as a tool for expanding studies from local to global scale.

Book Guide to the Aquatic Insects of New Zealand

Download or read book Guide to the Aquatic Insects of New Zealand written by Michael J. Winterbourn and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this excellent identification guide to aquatic insects in New Zealand has been updated with the latest information, making it an essential resource as the demand for river surveys and water quality studies continues to grow. Since the third edition was published five years ago, there have been great advances in our knowledge of New Zealand's aquatic insects. This edition includes information from several new publications about the systematics of New Zealand aquatic insects. More than 80 new titles have been added to the reference list and cited in the text; this serves both to document taxonomic changes and to guide the reader to the expanding literature on the aquatic insects of NZ. The book provides keys to enable insects to be identified to the family or genus level. Notes on distribution, habitat, and problems likely to be encountered with identification are included, along with full references, glossary of terms, and an index of taxa, common names, and general subjects. This is a joint publication venture of the Entomological Society of New Zealand (Inc.) and the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society.
