Download or read book The Biochemical Journal 1916 Vol 10 Classic Reprint written by W. M. Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biochemical Journal, 1916, Vol. 10 Perhaps the most startling of his discoveries in the domain of biochemistry was the recognition of the carbohydrate groups in the protein molecule. Dr Payy'e theory of the glucosidic nature of the proteins was received with interest throughout the scientific world, and a multiplicity of gluco-proteins have since been isolated. Later investigations have shown, however, that the carbohydrate linkage is not of a glucosidic nature so that the metabolic value assigned to these groups by Dr Pavy has not been generally accepted although no other explanation of their significance has yet been attempted. Book The Biochemical Journal 1913 Vol 7

Download or read book The Biochemical Journal 1913 Vol 7 written by W. M. Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biochemical Journal, 1913, Vol. 7: Edited for the Biochemical Society The whole question of the course of the breakdown of the protein molecule within the tissues is one of the most obscure in physiology. We have now a fairly good idea of the form in which the protein is absorbed from the lumen of the intestine but its immediate fate is still unknown. Apparently however definite evidence is now collecting [folin, 1912] in support of the View that no immediate synthesis, analogous to that of fat, takes place. Unquestionably, irrespective of the form in which the protein material is conveyed to the tissues, there is, soon after the ingestion of food, a fairly complete disintegration of the protein molecule as evidenced by the increase in the output of nitrogenous substances in the urine. Of course it might be maintained, as it has been, that this material arises not from the newly ingested material but from effete protoplasm broken down and discarded when a new supply of repair material is available. If this be. So then the material excreted ought to bear some definite percentage relationship to the normal protein of the body, for example the ratio of sulphur to nitrogen in the urine Should approximate to that of the average tissue as obtained say by the study of the sulphur and nitrogen ratio in complete starvation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pathways and networks underlying biological function Now in its second edition, Biochemical Pathways continues to garner praise from students, instructors, and researchers for its clear, full-color illustrations of the pathways and networks that determine biological function. Biochemical Pathways examines the biochemistry of bacteria, plants, and animals. It offers a quick overview of the metabolic sequences in biochemical pathways, the chemistry and enzymology of conversions, the regulation of turnover, the expression of genes, the immunological interactions, and the metabolic background of health disorders. A standard set of conventions is used in all illustrations, enabling readers to easily gather information and compare the key elements of different biochemical pathways. For both quick and in-depth understanding, the book uses a combination of: Illustrations integrating many different features of the reactions and their interrelationships Tables listing the important system components and their function Text supplementing and expanding on the illustrated facts In the second edition, the volume has been expanded by 50 percent. Text and figures have undergone a thorough revision and update, reflecting the tremendous progress in biochemical knowledge in recent years. A guide to the relevant biochemical databases facilitates access to the extensive documentation of scientific knowledge. Biochemical Pathways, Second Edition is recommended for all students and researchers in such fields as biochemistry, molecular biology, medicine, organic chemistry, and pharmacology. The book's illustrated pathways aids the reader in understanding the complex set of biochemical reactions that occur in biological systems. From the reviews: “... highly recommended for every scientist and student working in biochemistry.” –Umwelt & Gesundheit 4/2012 (review in German language)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Medical Biochemistry is supported by more than 45 years of teaching experience, providing coverage of basic biochemical topics, including the structural, physical, and chemical properties of water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. In addition, the general aspects of thermodynamics, enzymes, bioenergetics, and metabolism are presented in straightforward and easy-to-comprehend language. This book ties these concepts into more complex aspects of biochemistry using a systems approach, dedicating chapters to the integral study of biological phenomena, including cell membrane structure and function, gene expression and regulation, protein synthesis and post-translational modifications, metabolism in specific organs and tissues, autophagy, cell receptors, signal transduction pathways, biochemical bases of endocrinology, immunity, vitamins and minerals, and hemostasis. The field of biochemistry is continuing to grow at a fast pace. This edition has been revised and expanded with all-new sections on the cell plasma membrane, the human microbiome, autophagy, noncoding, small and long RNAs, epigenetics, genetic diseases, virology and vaccines, cell signaling, and different modes of programmed cell death. The book has also been updated with full-color figures, new tables, chapter summaries, and further medical examples to improve learning and better illustrate the concepts described and their clinical significance.
