Book The Best Bridge Book

Book excerpt: When Linda Tafet injured her shoulder and could no longer play golf or tennis, she found a new passion in the game of bridge. She took lessons, and the more she learned the more fascinated she became with the game. Every time she learned something new, she would condense it into her own words on a small index card. Soon, these cards became a stack, and then she combined the stack into a small three-ring binder. When her bridge friends saw what she was up to, they asked her to make them binders as well, and pretty soon she found herself in the handmade book-making business, selling each book for $75 each. After selling more than five hundred of these books, Linda decided she was working too hard and could reach more bridge players if she published her book. The Best Bridge Book is a compilation of her original handmade book, now produced as a paperback. Larry Cohen, a very good friend of Linda's and one of the best bridge teachers in the world, edited her book, ensuring that each lesson is correct and easy to follow. Now all bridge players from beginners to advanced can enjoy and learn from Linda's book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From hart house to the Bermuda Bowl, Most young bridge players spend their formative years experimenting with wild ideas, inventing new conventions and systems, playing in crazy contracts, and discovering the magic of card play. Michael Schoenborn was no exception. This book is an entertaining account of his formative years in the bridge clubs of Toronto, and how he finally fulfilled his dream of playing in the Bermuda Bowl. Along his journey from the university bridge club to the world championships, he meets a cast of characters worthy of Victor Mollo: the Owl, Big Bird, Eric the Half Bee, Colonel Bulldozer, Mrs. Four-Notrump, the Bambino, the Albatross, the Hummingbird, and many more. One thing separates them from Moilo's stories, however: these people were (and are) real, and their hilarious misadventures at the bridge table and away from it were real too. Great characters, great stories, great bridge hands - what more could you want? Book jacket.

Book Comics and Novelization

Download or read book Comics and Novelization written by Benoît Glaude and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-24 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book opens a novel perspective on comics and literature interactions. It claims that the two artistic media have always maintained a mutual emulation, for as long as they have coexisted in media culture. To demonstrate this, the present research does not focus on literary adaptations in comics form but rather on a literary corpus that remains virtually unexplored: comics-related novels. The purpose of this volume is to inventory French comics-related novels and to study them. Within the limits of the French-speaking world, this book pieces together a literary history of bande dessinée through its novels, from the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. Although the comic strip – including the aptly named "graphic novel" – has sometimes been regarded as the disciple of an unsurpassable literary model, do these under-studied adaptations in novel form not rather indicate a mutual relationship, or even an emulation, between the two media?

Book The West Bank of Greater New Orleans

Download or read book The West Bank of Greater New Orleans written by Richard Campanella and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West Bank has been a vital part of greater New Orleans since the city’s inception, serving as its breadbasket, foundry, shipbuilder, railroad terminal, train manufacturer, and even livestock hub. At one time it was the Gulf South’s St. Louis, boasting a diversified industrial sector as well as a riverine, mercantilist, and agricultural economy. Today the mostly suburban West Bank is proud but not pretentious, pleasant if not prominent, and a distinct, affordable alternative to the more famous neighborhoods of the East Bank. Richard Campanella is the first to examine the West Bank holistically, as a legitimate subregion with its own story to tell. No other part of greater New Orleans has more diverse yet deeply rooted populations: folks who speak in local accents, who exhibit longstanding cultural traits, and, in some cases, who maintain family ownership of lands held since antebellum times—even as immigrants settle here in growing numbers. Campanella demonstrates that West Bankers have had great agency in their own place-making, and he challenges the notion that their story is subsidiary to a more important narrative across the river. The West Bank of Greater New Orleans is not a traditional history, nor a cultural history, but rather a historical geography, a spatial explanation of how the West Bank’s landscape formed: its terrain, environment, land use, jurisdictions, waterways, industries, infrastructure, neighborhoods, and settlement patterns, past and present. The book explores the drivers, conditions, and power structures behind those landscape transformations, using custom maps, aerial images, photographic montages, and a detailed historical timeline to help tell that complex geographical story. As Campanella shows, there is no “greater New Orleans” without its cross-river component. The West Bank is an essential part of this remarkable metropolis.
