Book excerpt: Four old friends confront their darkest secrets in this fantasy steeped in nostalgia, folklore, religion, and the seductive landscape of Southern Italy—by the Italian Neil Gaiman. “A tale of adventure, mystery, friendship and heart-wrenching beauty that will make you re-examine what is holy, what is true, and what is beyond the realm of possibility.” —BookPage Four old school friends have a pact: to meet up every year in the small town in Puglia they grew up in. Art, the charismatic leader of the group and creator of the pact, insists that the agreement must remain unshakable and enduring. But this year, he never shows up. A visit to his house increases the friends’ worry: Art is farming marijuana. In Southern Italy doing that kind of thing can be very dangerous. They can’t go to the Carabinieri so must make enquiries of their own. This is how they come across the rumors about Art—bizarre and unbelievable rumors that he miraculously cured the local mafia boss’ daughter of terminal leukemia. And among the chaos of his house, they find a document written by Art, “The Book of Hidden Things”, that promises to reveal dark secrets and wonders beyond anything previously known. Set in the beguiling and seductive world of Southern Italy, Francesco Dimitri’s first novel in English is a story friendship, landscape, love, betrayal, and mystery that will entrance fans of Elena Ferrante, Neil Gaiman, and Donna Tartt.

Book excerpt: FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOKS OF 2017 It is four years since the virus came, killing every adult in its path. Not long after that the electricity failed. Food and water started running out. Fires raged uncontrolled across the country. Now Anna cares for her brother alone in a house hidden in the woods, keeping him safe from 'the Outside', scavenging for food amid the packs of wild dogs that roam their ruined, blackened world. Before their mother died, she told them to love each other and never part. She told them that, when they reach adulthood, the sickness will claim them too. But she also told them that someone, somewhere, will have a cure. When the time comes, Anna knows, they must leave their world and find another. By turns luminous and tender, gripping and horrifying, Anna is a haunting parable of love and loneliness; of the stories we tell to sustain us, and the lengths we will go to in order to stay alive.

Book excerpt: Government Initiatives In Bus Transport Services Are Helping Commuters Efficient and affordable transport services are the lifeline of any region anywhere in the world. It goes without saying that this holds true for Odisha as well, particularly when it comes to the use of buses for commuting. Private bus operators provide good connectivity on many routes but recent government initiatives like Mo Bus have changed the scenario. Read our Cover Story to find out more. There was a time when sports and academics were considered to be poles apart. That belief has changed in recent years. Nobody can articulate this better than Odisha’s Sports and IT Minister Tusharkanti Behera who is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur. The minister, who is our Cityzen for the edition, discusses this and more. He also talks about how Odisha has emerged as the ultimate sports destination of India over the past years, with facilities like the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the JN Indoor Stadium in Cuttack hosting major international and national sporting meets. The most recent one, the Khelo India University Games, was also held in Bhubaneswar, mostly at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), proving once again that Odisha is indeed the sports capital of India. There is a little bit of poetry in everybody’s life. Nobody knows it better than singer-musician Harpreet. Even as a child, he had understood that music, and poetry, would be his calling in life. He talks about this and lot more in Transit Lounge during his third, and most recent, visit to Odisha. The section also features Mahina Khanum and Avishai who have travelled the world to take Odissi to new audiences. What makes their journey so interesting is that Mahina is not from India to begin with and Avishai was introduced to Odissi by her. The government is working to restore and promote iconic tourist destinations like the Sun Temple in Konark. My City Links takes a close look at the plans, efforts on the ground, and listens to some dissonant voices to bring you the big picture in City Beat. Book excerpt: John Banville’s stunning powers of mimicry are brilliantly on display in this engrossing novel, the darkly compelling confession of an improbable murderer. Freddie Montgomery is a highly cultured man, a husband and father living the life of a dissolute exile on a Mediterranean island. When a debt comes due and his wife and child are held as collateral, he returns to Ireland to secure funds. That pursuit leads to murder. And here is his attempt to present evidence, not of his innocence, but of his life, of the events that lead to the murder he committed because he could. Like a hero out of Nabokov or Camus, Montgomery is a chillingly articulate, self-aware, and amoral being, whose humanity is painfully on display.

Book Basanti

    Book Details:
  • Author : Annada Shankar Ray
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-12-20
  • ISBN : 0199095876
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book Basanti written by Annada Shankar Ray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basanti is a misfit in conservative, pre-independence rural Odisha. Not only does she read and write, all her choices—from marrying for love to dispensing medicines to the poor and running a girls’ school—are unconventional. Her emancipatory aspirations evoke strong reactions from her surroundings, even surprisingly from her husband, who is supposedly passionate about women’s freedom. In this collaborative novel, nine young authors narrate the journey of a liberated woman who questions the socially ordained roles of women and argues for change, especially through education. The authors, six men and three women, belonged to the ‘Sabuja Age’ in Odia literature, a short-lived, creative period of ten to fifteen years. Serialized in Utkala Sahitya between May 1924 and November 1926 and published as a book in 1931, with a revised version appearing in 1968, Basanti is the first fictional declaration of the independence of the Odia woman.
