Book Big Bad Banks

Download or read book Big Bad Banks written by Thorsten Beck and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policymakers and economists disagree about the impact of bank regulations on the distribution of income. Exploiting cross-state and cross-time variation, we test whether liberalizing restrictions on intra-state branching in the United States intensified, ameliorated, or had no effect on income distribution. We find that branch deregulation lowered income inequality. Deregulation lowered income inequality by affecting labor market conditions, not by boosting the business income of the poor, nor by enhancing educational attainment. Reductions in the earnings gap between men and women and between skilled and unskilled workers account for the bulk of the explained drop in income inequality.

Book excerpt: Bad Banks is a gripping account of the problems and scandals that continue to bedevil the world's banking system some eight years after the credit crunch. It follows the fortunes and misfortunes of individual banks, from RBS to Lloyds. It exposes instances of mis-selling, money laundering, interest rate fixing and incompetence. And it considers the bigger picture: how the failings of the world's banking system are threatening to undermine our future economic security. Alex Brummer, the City Editor of the Daily Mail, has had access to all the major players, from HBOS's Andy Hornby, to former Governor of the Bank of England Sir Mervyn King, to the ex-Chief Executive of Barclays, Bob Diamond, to Lloyds' António Horta-Osório. His book is an insightful – and terrifying – account of institutions once renowned for their probity, but now all too often a byword for incompetence, and worse.

Book The Next Money Crash And How to Avoid It

Download or read book The Next Money Crash And How to Avoid It written by Uli Kortsch and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Mike Mullen, on May 10, 2012, stated that the national debt is the single biggest threat to national security. The deficit spending and accumulated debt of many nations, including the United States, is a topic of wide discussion and concern. Offering provocative and compelling solutions for remedying the country’s banking system, The Next Money Crash—and How to Avoid It presents a transcription of the conference, “Fixing the Banking System for Good,” organized by the Global Interdependence Center. This conference offered a variety of speakers presenting differing views of key issues, all with a common goal—to moderate the financial disruptions the current system allows; to provide a sound, stable currency; to compel, through market forces, more transparency in the activities of financial institutions; and to take taxpayers off the hook. In all of the plans, more capital and more transparency are key elements, along with the end to government guarantees, which provide advantages to large, opaque financial institutions. The Next Money Crash—and How to Avoid It compiles the latest thinking of many leading minds in finance and economics and provides a clear prescription for fixing the banking system as well as the global monetary system.

Book Central Bankers at the End of Their Rope

Download or read book Central Bankers at the End of Their Rope written by Jack Rasmus and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An historically unprecedented state subsidization of the US financial system has been implemented since 2010 via the Federal Reserve, the US central bank. Oiginally designed to serve as lender of last resort during banking crises, central banking globally has been transformed into the subsidization of the private banking system. Today that system is addicted to, and increasingly dependent on, continuing central bank infusions of significant amounts of liquidity. Rescinding this artificial subsidization would almost certainly lead to a financial and real collapse of the global economy. Central banks will not be able any time soon to retreat from their massive liquidity injections. Nor will they find it possible to raise their interest rates much beyond brief token adjustments. Truly, central bankers are at the end of their rope. This book provides a comprehensive analysis of this urgent dilemma and proposes how to revolutionize central banking in the public interest.

Book The unity of the capitalist economy and state

Download or read book The unity of the capitalist economy and state written by Geert Reuten and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The unity of the capitalist economy and state, Geert Reuten offers a systematic exposition of the capitalist system, showing that the capitalist economy and the capitalist state constitute a unity. In its critique of contemporary economics, the book argues that in order to comprehend the capitalist system, one requires a full synthetic exposition of the economic and state institutions and processes necessary for its continued existence. A synthetic approach also reveals a range of components that are often obscured by partial analyses. In its systematic character, Reuten’s work takes inspiration from Marx’s provisional outline of the capitalist system in Capital, while also addressing fields that Marx left unfinished – such as the capitalist state.

  • Release : 2010-12-01
  • ISBN : 9780815720140
  • Pages : 798 pages

Download or read book The World Bank written by Devesh Kapur and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This effort constitutes the most comprehensive and authoritative work to date on the history of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, or the World Bank. Author-editors John Lewis, Richard Webb, and Devesh Kapur chronicle the evolution of this institution and offer insights into its successes, failures, and prospects for the future. The result of their intense labors is an invaluable resource for other researchers and a fascinating study in its own right. The work is divided into two volumes. The first is organized thematically and examines the critical events and policy issues in the World Bank's development over the last fifty years. Chapter topics include poverty alleviation, structural adjustment lending, environmental programs, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the International Development Association (IDA), and the evolution of the Bank as an institution. The second volume contains case studies written by experts with experience in the various regions in which the Bank operates. There are chapters on the Bank's activities in Korea, Mexico, Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Europe. Volume 2 also contains essays on the World Bank's relationship with the United States, Japan, and Western Europe, and its partnership with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). By special arrangement, the authors have had wide-ranging access to confidential documents at the World Bank, making this work a unique source of information on the internal workings of this critical institution. They have also drawn on extensive interviews with current and past Bank officials. Moreover, publication could not be more timely, coming as it does when many in the development community and in the U.S. Congress are questioning the Bank's track record and even its reason for existence. The World Bank: Its First Half Century will be of great interest not only to development practitioners but also to students of international relations, development economics, and global finance. During the course of the project, John P. Lewis and Richard Webb were nonresident senior fellows, and Devesh Kapur was a program associate, in the Foreign Policy Studies program at the Brookings Institution.

Book Bank Failures in the Major Trading Countries of the World

Download or read book Bank Failures in the Major Trading Countries of the World written by Benton E. Gup and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1998-06-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bank failures, near failures, and crises are common throughout the world, and particularly in the major G-10 trading countries, including the United States, Germany, and Japan. But equally common are the bailouts by national governments, when they perceive that bank failure will result in severe economic distress. Gup examines these events, focusing on happenings in the particularly volatile years since 1980, and finds that nonperforming real estate loans, even more than fraud, are the primary cause. His wide-ranging investigation casts doubt on the effectiveness of bank regulation and makes clear that with globalization and emerging technologies, change in regulatory methods is needed. This book is essential for scholars, students as well as professionals in international banking, finance, investment, and world trade.
