This volume assembles selected proceedings of a conference held at the University of Leuven in July 1998. It sheds light on the tension between 'change' and 'preservation' in religious language. More specifically, the volume focuses on metaphor and translation as two sources of linguistic (semantic) change, which both play an important role in the continuous process of interpreting and re-interpreting discourse, i.e. the Bible. Although operating on different grounds with different intensity and range, both processes face the same challenge of finding new, historically and co(n)textually appropriate linguistic means to express a complex content. With regard to the cultural (religious) and historical embeddedness of different communities, the requirement of linguistic appropriateness inevitably leads to a continuous process of semantic adjustment ('reinterpretation') of earlier versions of a text. In dealing with religious language, however, this process of semantic change, which from a linguistic point of view may seem inevitable, sometimes faces severe opposition from the religious community itself. This very tension between the natural process of semantic change and the strong preserving power relating to the sacred content of religious language renders religious language a unique object of study for linguists, theologians, exegetes and others. Book excerpt: Metaphorical expressions not only appear in poetic texts of the Old Testament but also in legal texts. In particular, they appear in the preambles to collections of laws, in their final summaries, in more general considerations on compliance with and violation of the law, in texts concerning the meaning of the law, dealing with topics that are now dealt with in law theory or law philosophy. Metaphorical expressions usually reveal how the authors of the relevant Torah / Law texts understood their function in society, in culture. They testify to the place of the Torah / Law in the system of values, about what society preferred in the law. The following monograph is a contribution to the scholarly debate, which is methodologically anchored in cognitive and culturally oriented linguistics. Its focus is to investigate Hebrew metaphorical expressions concerning one of the key Old Testament concept Torah / Law. The author focuses on the identification of Hebrew conceptual metaphors and on the explanation of the meaning of the respective metaphorical expressions. Another area in which the use of cognitive linguistic analyses and the interpretation of metaphorical expressions has proven to be very effective is in the area of translation. The third chapter of this book is given to look at modern translations of selected metaphorical expressions into modern Czech and English. Another possible application of cognitive linguistic analyses of metaphorical expressions in the semantic field Law is represented by the final case study. The study brings the results of cognitive semantic analyses of the didactic human rights material Compass: Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People with regard to the metaphors used to conceptualize the concept of human rights.

God sees, hears, thinks, feels, runs, rides chariots, laughs, wields weapons, gives birth, and even repents. Many of these descriptions, taken at face value, seem to run afoul of classical thought about God's qualities of divine simplicity, transcendence, omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and, especially, immutability. Traditionally, such representations have been seen as accommodations to human intellectual and moral limitations. They allowed God to be more comprehensible but did not actually describe any real part of His character, being, or interaction with humanity. References to God seeing or hearing, for example, are not deemed to represent real acts, as God is all-knowing. This view is largely based on the Aristotelian conception of metaphors: they are rhetorical devices and should not be taken literally. Since the 1970s, our understanding of the ways in which metaphors convey meaning has become much more sophisticated. We are better able to unlock the function of human acts of God within the Bible. This book aims to explore the biblical metaphor of divine sight in Genesis and how current conceptions of metaphorical function can enrich our reading of the text and its theology.

The book begins with an exploration of how to identify and interpret the metaphors in 1 Samuel 25. Next, the metaphors in 2 Samuel 16:16-17:14 are compared with other tropes, primarily metonymy and simile. Then the notion of “dead” metaphors is challenged while examining the figurative language in 1 Samuel 24. An in-depth analysis of the figurative language in these texts results in a better understanding of the mechanics of metaphor, and a richer, more nuanced reading of these stories, their characters, and language.

Job’s spatial metaphors form a metaphorical landscape in which God’s character and his creation are challenged in unprecedented ways. In the theophany, God reacts to that landscape. This book introduces a pragmatic synthesis of both conceptual metaphor theory and spatial semantics and it demonstrates their exegetical and hermeneutic potential.

Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] Conceptual Metaphor Theory offers significant insights into metaphor in translation. One major insight comes from the notion that words used in metaphorical expressions are not individual linguistic expressions, but are outward manifestations of conceptual metaphors. If a text contains linguistic expressions which are manifestations of the same conceptual metaphor, they can therefore be considered parts of a whole. This theoretical understanding makes for a more coherent strategy that can be employed when analysing metaphor in translation in that it takes into account the tension between the individual metaphorical expression and the overarching conceptual metaphor within a text. Following a survey of conceptual metaphor theories and of the translation approaches to metaphor, this dissertation integrates the major insights from Conceptual Metaphor Theory into a model which I propose as a means for analysing how certain metaphorical concepts have been translated in the Fourth Gospel. In order to define the corpus, I survey the history of the Italian Bible. Although there are several works on the translations of the Bible into Italian, there has yet to be a coherent history of the Italian Bible. My dissertation therefore includes a history of the Italian Bible from the manuscript tradition until the present day. For the analysis of metaphor, I select a corpus of modern Italian Bibles from the Catholic, Protestant and Ecumenical traditions published in the 20th and 21st centuries. I apply the model to my analysis of two metaphorical concepts. The first, JESUS IS THE VINE, is found in JOHN 15:1-16. For this metaphorical concept, I discuss the major Sitz im Leben before analysing the translations of the corpus. I conduct a second analysis on the cosmic trial. The Fourth Gospel as a heavenly lawsuit has been explored by several Johannine scholars. In my dissertation, I present the cosmic trial as a metaphorical concept, and I focus specifically on two entailments.
