Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible, Its Own Refutation While writing this book, I imagined some Christian at my side whom I addressed in the second person whenever it suited my convenience. For the purpose of avoiding tedious explanations or the use of words imlying condition, I have, in many instances, treated of facts as being established, intending to be understood as merely asserting that they were alleged by the writers, whose books were under review. For the same reason I have called certain books of the Bible after the names of their reputed authors, notwithstanding my previous denial of their genuineness. My anxiety, that the Chapter on the Prophecies should be understood, induces me to request the reader, on his first perusal, to examine those verses only, of the chapters which have been quoted entire, to which his attention is particularly invited. Had I quoted but these verses, I should have been accused of garbling. It is well known with what reluctance we lay down one book to take up another, to which reference is made. Not one in a hundred of our citizens has ever read those books that are called prophetical, with a view of understanding them. I am more than anxious that they should be read, and their true character understood. Influenced by these considerations, I have made copious extracts from some of them. Let me also request the reader to become familiar with the characters and histories of those individuals whose names are found in this chapter, for he never will be able to understand and appreciate the argument, unless the character and history of each be intimately associated with the name. I ask nothing of the reader which I have not given him the means of acquiring. The propriety of this request was evinced to me a few days since. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible in the Workshop: A Refutation of Bishop Colenso's Critical Examination of the Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua There is, however, no lack of avowal on the part of the Bishop of what he intends to do if he is able. There is no attempt to disguise the uncompromising hostility of his cri ticism upon the first six books of the Holy Scriptures. He does not leave the slightest doubt upon the mind of the reader that he intends to prove, if he can, the untruthfulness of the Pentateuch, or, as he himself terms it, the unhistorical character of those books. But why not speak out plainly? If they are unhistorical, they are but a collection of fables, pure and simple, and the sooner they become the companions of Jack, the Giant-killer, the better. There can be no positive teaching drawn from a book, in which it requires a close study to detect the hidden fable from the hidden truth; and the whole history is either one of gross imposture, unworthy the notice of men living in earnest, or it is part of the oracles of the living God. Who will not henceforth trust that glossary for the meaning of the word baptize? The word Church, in like manner, our Baptist brethren have, by their glossary, interdicted from the New Testa ment, and directed us to read in its stead Assembly. Book The New Version Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Version Classic Reprint written by George Chainey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Version To their unsophisticated minds, this busi ness is seen in a far different light than by ambitious theologians desirous of increasing their income and glory by a place on the translators' staff. Hitherto, they have really believed the Bible from the first verse in Genesis to the last in Revelations. They supposed that God was the author. The idea that he had left the proof-reading to fallible man had never entered their heads. But now every one is familiar with the fact that there are thousands of different read ings that can only be settled by majority vote. They cannot but reflect that, if these men can change it today, other men may do so again to-morrow. On finding what were to them some of the sublime passages left out, they will naturally ask themselves, If man composed these, why may he not lie the author of it all? The Bible in many a house, regarded in the light of a fetich, will lose much of its sacred character when the revealing light of the new version falls on it. This new version will also set thousands of people to reading the Bible. The reason why many think so much of this book is because they never read it. They have imagined that all the good, true, and beautiful things the ministers find in it are really there. By reading it for themselves, they will discover the deception. I think that, if any one would read the Bible for the purpose of deciding the ques tion of its divinity, they would find a ver dict against it long before reaching the New Testament. The Catholic Church obeys the law of self-preservation by withholding the Bible from the laity. The Pope knows better than to countenance a new version. The friends of humanity can congratulate them selves that Protestantism likes the taste of the poison that will destroy it. Book The Jefferson Bible

Download or read book The Jefferson Bible written by Thomas Jefferson and published by Wyatt North Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2014-01-05 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Refutation of the Doctrine of Total Hereditary Depravity What, but ignorance of human nature, has led to the admission, by many religionists, of the doctrine of total hereditary depravity? A doctrine, which, in order to its refutation, needs but one enlightened glance of the mind's eye, at the principles of which man is composed. This doctrine, although incompatible with every prin ciple of self-knowledge, has become extensively papa-c lat - is in fact a precious ingredient in many popular creeds - is the chief corner stone of Calvinistic and Ar minian sectarism. Men with ditliculty look within themselves; and being repeatedly told that their deprav ity is total and hereditary, take the truth of it for grant ed, on the mere ipse dizit of those who teach it, with out that examination, which is necessary to a detection d' it: fallacies. Book A History of the Bible

Download or read book A History of the Bible written by John Barton and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A literary history of our most influential book of all time, by an Oxford scholar and Anglican priest In our culture, the Bible is monolithic: It is a collection of books that has been unchanged and unchallenged since the earliest days of the Christian church. The idea of the Bible as "Holy Scripture," a non-negotiable authority straight from God, has prevailed in Western society for some time. And while it provides a firm foundation for centuries of Christian teaching, it denies the depth, variety, and richness of this fascinating text. In A History of the Bible, John Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. Barton shows how the Bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for Jews and Christians alike, yet argues that it must be read in its historical context--from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries. It is a book full of narratives, laws, proverbs, prophecies, poems, and letters, each with their own character and origin stories. Barton explains how and by whom these disparate pieces were written, how they were canonized (and which ones weren't), and how they were assembled, disseminated, and interpreted around the world--and, importantly, to what effect. Ultimately, A History of the Bible argues that a thorough understanding of the history and context of its writing encourages religious communities to move away from the Bible's literal wording--which is impossible to determine--and focus instead on the broader meanings of scripture.

Download or read book Worlds of Their Own written by Robert J. Schadewald and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is written by the winners; including the histories of science and scholarship. Unorthodoxies that flourish at the grassroots are often beneath the contempt of historians. Zetetic astronomy (flat-Earth science) was a household term in Victorian England, but not a single reference to it is found in conventional histories. We ignore such histories at our peril; the modern intelligent design movement is almost a carbon copy of the 19th century flat-Earth movement in its argumentative techniques. When orthodox science finds itself stumped, or a certain segment finds it unpalatable, the unorthodox may rush in to fill the void. The past two decades have brought a surge of interest in the history and philosophy of science. But how do we discern between pseudo and actual science? To fully understand what science is, we must understand what science is not. Written with penetrating insight into the minds of alternative thinkers, this book throws light on the differences between pseudo and actual science. The droll humor that permeates Worlds of Their Own makes it as enjoyable a read as it is enlightening. Despite its focus on unorthodox ideas, Worlds of Their Own is about human nature. Whether they drew their ideas from the Bible or nature, all the pseudoscientists discussed in this book were driven to communicate their truth to the misinformed world. None was afflicted with self-doubt. All defended their truth with similar standards of evidence, modes of reasoning, and methods of scholarship. Their counterparts are legion the blue-collar philosopher who refutes Einstein from his barstool, the preacher who refutes (but cannot define) evolution from his pulpit, the narcissist who promotes quackery courtesy of modern talk shows and infomercials. Each topic discussed in Worlds of Their Own covers a once-popular concept that persists to this day. Numerous works examine or debunk pseudoscientific ideas. Worlds of Their Own is unique in letting unorthodox thinkers speak for themselves. Readers will want to buy the book to learn how such people argued their cases against conventional views. Worlds of Their Own is a timeless book offering humor, substance, and analysis for a mainstream audience. Moreover, it is a unique source book on unorthodox ideas that nearly everyone has heard about but few fully understand. And the source material is rare. For example, the National Union Catalog lists only four U.S. libraries the Library of Congress, New York Public, Yale, and Duke that hold Carpenters One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Is Not a Globe (1885). Bobs own extensive collection of flat-Earth literature as well as his collection of literature advocating various other unorthodoxies was donated to the University of Wisconsin after his death. It is housed there as the Robert Schadewald Collection on Pseudo-Science. This collection consists of 885 books and pamphlets (many from the 19th century) as well as 70 boxes of personal files and collected news clippings. Praise for Bob Schadewald: Perhaps the most important thing that Bob taught me has to do with the striking insights one can gain by first studying the history of one particular kind of crackpot science for example, the flat-Earth movement in past centuries and then realizing how reliable that knowledge can be for gaining insight into a seemingly unrelated pseudoscience of more contemporary times for example, the creation science movement that flourished in Iowa and across the country in recent decades, and is now returning as intelligent design today. Nobody, but nobody could make the case for this more convincingly than Bob Schadewald, and Lois has included some of Bobs best material doing so between the covers of Worlds of Their Own. John W. Patterson.emeritus Materials Science & Engineering, Iowa State University Bob Schadewald was an insightful thinker w
