Book The Use and Storage of Methyl Isocyanate MIC at Bayer CropScience

Download or read book The Use and Storage of Methyl Isocyanate MIC at Bayer CropScience written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of hazardous chemicals such as methyl isocyanate can be a significant concern to the residents of communities adjacent to chemical facilities, but is often an integral part of the chemical manufacturing process. In order to ensure that chemical manufacturing takes place in a manner that is safe for workers, members of the local community, and the environment, the philosophy of inherently safer processing can be used to identify opportunities to eliminate or reduce the hazards associated with chemical processing. However, the concepts of inherently safer process analysis have not yet been adopted in all chemical manufacturing plants. The Use and Storage of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) at Bayer CropScience presents a possible framework to help plant managers choose between alternative processing options-considering factors such as environmental impact and product yield as well as safety- to develop a chemical manufacturing system. In 2008, an explosion at the Bayer CropScience chemical production plant in Institute, West Virginia, resulted in the deaths of two employees, a fire within the production unit, and extensive damage to nearby structures. The accident drew renewed attention to the fact that the Bayer facility manufactured and stores methyl isocyanate, or MIC - a volatile, highly toxic chemical used in the production of carbamate pesticides and the agent responsible for thousands of death in Bhopal, India, in 1984. In the Institute accident, debris from the blast hit the shield surrounding a MIC storage tank, and although the container was not damaged, an investigation by the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board found that the debris could have struck a relief valve vent pipe and cause the release of MIC to the atmosphere. The Board's investigation also highlighted a number of weaknesses in the Bayer facility's emergency response systems. In light of these concerns, the Board requested the National Research Council convene a committee of independent experts to write a report that examines the use and storage of MIC at the Bayer facility. The Use and Storage of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) at Bayer CropScience also evaluates the analyses on alternative production methods for MIC and carbamate pesticides preformed by Bayer and the previous owners of the facility.

Book Advocacy after Bhopal

Download or read book Advocacy after Bhopal written by Kim Fortun and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-04 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1984 explosion of the Union Carbide chemical plant in Bhopal, India was undisputedly one of the world's worst industrial disasters. Some have argued that the resulting litigation provided an "innovative model" for dealing with the global distribution of technological risk; others consider the disaster a turning point in environmental legislation; still others argue that Bhopal is what globalization looks like on the ground. Kim Fortun explores these claims by focusing on the dynamics and paradoxes of advocacy in competing power domains. She moves from hospitals in India to meetings with lawyers, corporate executives, and environmental justice activists in the United States to show how the disaster and its effects remain with us. Spiraling outward from the victims' stories, the innovative narrative sheds light on the way advocacy works within a complex global system, calling into question conventional notions of responsibility and ethical conduct. Revealing the hopes and frustrations of advocacy, this moving work also counters the tendency to think of Bhopal as an isolated incident that "can't happen here."

Book Rethinking Bhopal

Download or read book Rethinking Bhopal written by Kenneth Bloch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Bhopal: A Definitive Guide to Investigating, Preventing, and Learning from Industrial Disasters is the go-to source for anyone seeking to learn how to improve process safety management (PSM) through applying fundamental asset reliability and incident investigation concepts. The seeds that unified PSM on a global scale were planted in Bhopal, India on December 3, 1984. Since then, considerable progress has been made to protect both workers and communities from catastrophic industrial failures. Industry acknowledges its responsibility to create value with accrued operating experience and that using information received from previous failures is a direct way to prevent future incidents. With this principle in mind, Bloch evaluates modern references related to the Bhopal Disaster, using recognized industrial asset reliability and incident investigation concepts. The practice of objective incident investigation offers a compelling insight into specific decisions and actions that resulted in history’s worst industrial disaster. Recording a fully transparent sequence of events promotes a personal sense of accountability for anyone involved in the manufacturing industry. Lessons learned can be immediately implemented by those with direct PSM, management, engineering, and operating responsibilities. Case histories demonstrate how patterns observed in the timeline leading up to the Bhopal Disaster can be detected in modern incidents and by recognizing these patterns in present-day processes avoids counterproductive operating decisions and unprecedented destruction. This text is instrumental in helping existing organizations re-evaluate their own exposures and risks, and would be a valuable read for any member of a process safety management team. Rethinking Bhopal: A Definitive Guide to Investigating, Preventing, and Learning from Industrial Disasters provides an expansion of knowledge and understanding for the novice in PSM while also providing depth and application considerations to challenge more experienced industry professionals. Note: All royalties from this book go to the Process Safety Heritage Trust Scholarship at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, USA. Learn how to improve Process Safety Management (PSM) performance by applying fundamental asset reliability and incident investigation concepts Understand your personal role in detecting and preventing Loss of Primary Containment (LOPC) incidents before they occur Take immediate action to stabilize processes under your control while promoting a systematic approach to eliminating persistent failure mechanisms Includes case histories to helpfully illustrate how to detect potentially destructive patterns in your own organization

Download or read book The Most Terrifying Trace of The Bhopal Gas Leak written by Rudiyant and published by Lembar Langit Indonesia. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bhopal Gas Leak, also known as the Bhopal Tragedy, occurred on the night of December 2-3, 1984, at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, India. The leaked gas was methyl isocyanate (MIC), used in the production of pesticides at the UCIL plant. The release of this gas resulted in a toxic gas cloud spreading around the Bhopal area. The tragedy claimed the lives of thousands of people in the days following the gas leak. The exact number of casualties is still debated, but estimates range from 15,000 to 25,000 people. Many others suffered serious injuries and long-term effects from gas exposure. The gas leak occurred due to an uncontrolled chemical reaction inside the MIC storage tank. The exact cause of the leak is still disputed, but factors mentioned include poor maintenance, safety violations, and security system failures. In addition to human casualties, the Bhopal gas leak also had significant environmental impacts. The spreading gas cloud contaminated the soil and air around the plant, causing extensive ecological damage and affecting the health of the local community for a long time. Book The Black Box of Bhopal

Download or read book The Black Box of Bhopal written by Themistocles D'Silva and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just after midnight on December 3, 1984, a gas leak occurred at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India. A vigorous chemical reaction inside a methyl isocyanate (MIC) storage tank, nicknamed the "Black Box", caused most of the material to vaporize and escape. Within days, over two thousand nearby residents were confirmed dead and tens of thousands exposed to toxic gases, which would cause them untold pain and health problems for years to come. The Black Box of Bhopal is a highly researched work that will challenge many of the public's assumptions about the disaster. It reveals new documents related to the construction and operations of the MIC plant and the internal workings of Union Carbide Corporation and its Indian subsidiary. It also critically analyzes the Indian government investigation report about the postulated cause of the gas leak. Through extensive explanation of the plant's history, scientific studies of the residue from the tank, and several flaws in the subsequent government controlled investigation, a clearer understanding of the events will be revealed that may surprise many readers. " This insightful book stretches from an explanation of how economic and political development in India contributed to the accident through the detailed chemistry involved.... The strength of D'Silva's book is the integration of original documentation...that demostrates just how complex the relationships were between Union Carbide; Union Carbide India Ltd. (UCIL), the subsidiary that operated the Bhopal plant; the Indian federal government and the local government.... D'Silva's book is an excellent Bhopal resource." Book review by Ronald J. Willey, professor of chemical engineering at Northeastern University. Chemical & Engineering News, American Chemical Society. See the full review here
