Book excerpt: The years 1510 and 1520 appear to be a crucial moment for the introduction of the Renaissance in the former Netherlands. That period coincides with the first activity period of Bernard van Orley, a major witness of the transition. Until now, research has been concentrating on the artist through his superb tapestries. Yet, from the end of the first decade of the 16th century to 1521, when he signed the monumental 'Job and Lazarus Polyptych' (Brussels, MRBAB/KMSKB, Inv. 1822), the artist produced paintings which integrated more and more shapes from the Italian peninsula. Did this change in perspective lead to significant differences in terms of workshop practices? How can works be best characterized when they make up the hard core of a catalogue with changing frontiers? In what way can archives shed new light on the artist's activity? Those questions are at the centre of a catalogue and essays, which aim to renew the vision of Bernard van Orley's painting, on the basis of the works kept in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium.

Artistic production at this time was still rooted in late medieval thought, yet more and more seized with new renaissance developments, and at a permanent state of ferment with constantly changing needs of society. The catalogue deals with correspondingly complex issues of interpretation through the works of Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Bouts, Gerard David, Colijn de Coter and Goossen van der Weyden. It comprises a technical, stylistic and iconographical investigation of seventeen paintings on the basis of a scientific research method, which has been fully established over the years. The authors have been able to adjust various attributions and interpretations. At the same time most valuable discoveries have been made with regard to the provenance of some work belonging to the Albrecht Bouts and Colijn de Coter Groups.

The magnificent tapestries he designed were acquired by the wealthiest clients of the day, up to and including rulers such as Emperor Charles V, King Francis I of France, King Henry VIII of England, and Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici of Tuscany. At the same time, Coecke was remarkable not only for the complexity and unparalleled quality of his tapestries, but also for his fluency in various media: this lavishly illustrated volume examines the full range of his work, from tapestry and stained-glass window designs to panel paintings, prints, drawings, and architectural treatises. Though only forty-eight when he died, Coecke was one of the greatest Netherlandish artists of the sixteenth century. His paintings and drawings, initially wrought in the style of the Antwerp Mannerists, evolved through his enthusiastic response to Italian Renaissance design, and influenced generations of artists in his wake. This comprehensive study explores Coecke’s stylistic development, as well as his substantial contribution to the body of great Renaissance art in Flanders. Firstly it analyses the emergence of a common identity amongst the amorphous collection of states in north-western Europe that were united first under the rule of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy and later the Habsburg princes, and traces the fortunes of this notion during the political and religious conflicts that divided the Low Countries during the second half of the sixteenth century. A second group of essays considers the emergence of dissidence and opposition to the regime, and explores how this was expressed and disseminated through popular culture. Finally, the volume shows how in the age of confessionalisation and civil war, challenging issues of identity presented themselves to both dissenting groups and individuals. Taken together these essays demonstrate how these dissident identities shaped and contributed to the development of the Netherlands during the early modern period.
