Book Claiming Germanness in America the Reception of the Bennett Law in Wisconsin s German language Press

Download or read book Claiming Germanness in America the Reception of the Bennett Law in Wisconsin s German language Press written by Christopher G. Stohs and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisconsin's Bennett Law of 1889 ignited a fiery debate regarding the merits of bilingual education, the proper degree of immigrant assimilation, and the extent of freedom of religion, conscience, and association. The law drew heavy German-American opposition because it was viewed as an attack on German parochial schools and thus on Deutschtum, on German culture itself. With the help of German Americans, Wisconsin's Democratic Party won its biggest victory in 1890 since before the Civil War, leading to the repeal of the Bennett Law in 1891 during the next legislative session. When historians have examined the Bennett Law, they have focused mostly on English-language sources and tended to neglect German-language ones. This dissertation seeks to fill that research gap by examining how Wisconsin's German-language newspapers covered the Bennett Law controversy. This dissertation reveals how the divisions among German Americans were reflected in their newspaper coverage of the Bennett Law. The Protestant Germania described the Bennett Law as an attack on parochial schools, the German language, and German culture and argued against the law employing different genres, such as critical essays and impassioned songs and poems. Taking a different view, the editors of the Amerikanische Turnzeitung expressed support for the Bennett Law, viewing it as allowing the state to fulfill its duty to properly educate its citizens. The editors of the Catholic Columbia saw in the Bennett Law controversy echoes of the Kulturkampf that their fellow Catholics had waged with Bismarck in the German Empire. Newspapers published outside of Milwaukee were drawn into the Bennett controversy, too. Wausau's Republican Der deutsche Pionier supported the law, while Madison's Democratic Wisconsin Botschafter, the Democratic Watertown WeltbuÌ8rger, and politically independent Pionier am Wisconsin opposed it. Understanding the ways in which German-language newspapers in Wisconsin reacted to the Bennett Law sheds light on how citizens of diverse ethnic backgrounds have, since the founding of the Republic, approached issues such as immigration, assimilation, religious freedom, and the role of government that are of enduring relevance in American society.

Book Encyclopedia of Educational Reform and Dissent

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Educational Reform and Dissent written by Thomas C. Hunt and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2010-01-20 with total page 1113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of American education is replete with educational reform, and to a lesser extent, educational dissent. Consider the present: you have various forms of privatization, school choice, the 'No Child Left Behind' act, home schooling, 'value-added' accountability, alternative teacher preparation programs, on-line instruction, etc. This range of activity is not exceptional. For instance, consider the past: progressive education, open education, the junior high school, the middle school, Life Adjustment education, career education, vocational education, the comprehensive high school, school-to-work, year-round schooling, behavioral objectives, proficiency exams (high-stakes testing), whole language, learning packages and self-paced instruction, modular scheduling, site-based management, all presented as the way to reform American schools, at least in part. Then you have the reformers themselves, such as John Dewey, George Counts, Herbert Kohl, John Holt, Charles Silberman, Admiral Hyman Rickover, James Bryant Conant, all the way back to Horace Mann himself. Dissenters, and dissenting movements, while not as numerous and certainly not as well known in educational circles, count the various faith-based schools and individuals such as Archbishop Hughes of New York.Clearly, this is an area rich in ideas, rife with controversy, and vital in its outcome for individuals and the nation as a whole. And yet, strangely enough, there exists no major encyclopedia bringing the varied strands together in one place as a ready reference for scholars, teachers, school administrators, and students studying to enter the educational profession. This two-volume work is intended to be that authoritative resource. Key themes and topics include: " biographies of reformers and dissenters " theoretical and ideological perspectives " key programs and legislation " judicial verdicts impacting educational change in America " the politics and processes of educational reform and policy making " dissent and resistance to reform " technology's impact on educational reform. A Reader's Guide in the front matter groups entries around such themes to help readers find related entries more easily.

Book The Praeger Handbook of Faith Based Schools in the United States K 12

Download or read book The Praeger Handbook of Faith Based Schools in the United States K 12 written by Thomas C. Hunt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a subject that is as important as it is divisive, this two-volume work offers the first current, definitive work on the intricacies and issues relative to America's faith-based schools. The Praeger Handbook of Faith-Based Schools in the United States, K–12 is an indispensable study at a time when American education is increasingly considered through the lenses of race, ethnicity, gender, and social class. With contributions from an impressive array of experts, the two-volume work provides a historical overview of faith-based schooling in the United States, as well as a comprehensive treatment of each current faith-based school tradition in the nation. The first volume examines three types of faith-based schools—Protestant schools, Jewish schools, and Evangelical Protestant homeschooling. The second volume focuses on Catholic, Muslim, and Orthodox schools, and addresses critical issues common to faith-based schools, among them state and federal regulation and school choice, as well as ethnic, cultural, confessional, and practical factors. Perhaps most importantly for those concerned with the questions and controversies that abound in U.S. education, the handbook grapples with outcomes of faith-based schooling and with the choices parents face as they consider educational options for their children.

Book The Dissenting Tradition in American Education

Download or read book The Dissenting Tradition in American Education written by James C. Carper and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the mid-nineteenth century, Americans created the functional equivalent of earlier state religious establishments. Supported by mandatory taxation, purportedly inclusive, and vested with messianic promise, public schooling, like the earlier established churches, was touted as a bulwark of the Republic and as an essential agent of moral and civic virtue. As was the case with dissenters from early American established churches, some citizens and religious minorities have dissented from the public school system, what historian Sidney Mead calls the country's «established church.» They have objected to the «orthodoxy» of the public school, compulsory taxation, and attempts to abolish their schools or bring them into conformity with the state school paradigm. The Dissenting Tradition in American Education recounts episodes of Catholic and Protestant nonconformity since the inception of public education, including the creation of Catholic and Protestant schools, homeschooling, conflicts regarding regulation of nonconforming schools, and controversy about the propositions of knowledge and dispositions of belief and value sanctioned by the state school. Such dissent suggests that Americans consider disestablishing the public school and ponder means of education more suited to their confessional pluralism and commitments to freedom of conscience, parental liberty, and educational justice.

Book Enlightening the Next Generation

Download or read book Enlightening the Next Generation written by F. Michael Perko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this title looks at the importance of the Catholic school in American education from 1830 to 1980. The articles in this collection illuminate the patterns of development. The most prevalent theme is that of school controversy, involving either Catholic conflict with public education and the wider culture on the one hand, or internal dissension within the Catholic community regarding the desirability of separate schools on the other. Taken together, these essays serve as pieces of a mosaic, interesting in themselves yet corporately providing a comprehensive picture of the history of Catholic schooling in America. They remind us that these institutions grew up as a response to particular forces at work in the wider society as well as within the Catholic community itself.
