Book Latin for Beginners Classic Reprint

Download or read book Latin for Beginners Classic Reprint written by Benjamin L. D'Ooge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin for Beginners What Is Latin If you will look at the map of Italy on the oppo site page, you will find near the middle of the peninsula and facing the west coast a district called Latium,1 and Rome its capital. The Latin language, meaning the language of Latium, was spoken by the ancient Romans and other inhabitants of Latium, and Latin was the name applied to it after the armies of Rome had carried the knowledge of her language far beyond its original boundaries. As the English of to-day is not quite the same as that Spoken two or three hundred years ago, so Latin was not always the same at all times, but changed more or less in the course of centuries. The sort of Latin you are going to learn was in use about two thousand years ago. And that period has been selected because the language was then at its best and the greatest works of Roman literature were being produced. This period, because of its supreme excellence, is called the Golden Age of Roman letters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Initia Latina: A Latin Book for Beginners This book is in tended to supply the needful grammar, translation, and exercises for a boy beginning Latin, either at home or at a preparatory school. It covers the same ground and employs the same vocabulary as the first 26 exercises of the writer's Exercises in Latin. Prose, and is designed to meet the wishes of some teachers who have felt that this earliest stage requires fuller treatment. It is assumed that the beginner will have first learnt to tell the parts of Speech in his own language, and the book deals with the Latin Simple Sentence and with Accidence to the end of the Regular Verbs. A suitable portion of grammar is printed with each lesson, and the whole of the Accidence used is summarised in clear print on a few pages at the end of the book. The special vocabularies given in the lessons are intended to be learnt, and the exercises to be written without further help. Book An Easy Method for Beginners in Latin Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Easy Method for Beginners in Latin Classic Reprint written by Albert Harkness and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Easy Method for Beginners in Latin The volume now offered to the public is intended to introduce the learner to such a practical and working knowledge of the Latin language as will enable him to read Caesar or Nepos with some degree of pleasure. The following are a few of the leading features of the work: 1. This volume is not a mere companion to the grammar, but a practical guide for the pupil in the work of reading, writing, and speaking Latin. It approaches the language on its practical side. The very first lesson, without a word of grammar, introduces the learner to complete Latin sentences with verb, subject, and object. Thus at the very outset he finds himself already using the language. He is not only reading Latin, but actually writing and speaking Latin. 2. The work is at once a Book of Latin Exercises, a Latin Reader, and a sufficient Grammar for the beginner. There is a growing conviction among teachers that the attempt to prepare boys to appreciate Caesar by means of a few short lessons and exercises is a failure - that to do this successfully requires a generous course in reading easy and interesting Latin. Indeed, in some schools it has been deemed wise to supplement the introductory Latin course by additional reading before entering upon the consecutive study of Latin authors. An attempt has accordingly been made to give this work sufficient size and scope to meet this reasonable demand. Download or read book The First Latin Book Classic Reprint written by William Coe Collar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Latin Book This book is not a revision of The Beginner's Latin Book, nor is it intended to supersede that work. It has been written for the purpose of offering to schools that cannot afford the amount of time and practice required to complete The Beginner's Latin Book, a work not less thorough, but easier, and demanding not more than two-thirds as much time. The reduction has been made almost wholly by shortening the exercises for translation, particularly those to be turned into Latin. Those who compare the two books will find that the inflections of the language are illustrated with as much copiousness in this book as in the former. The same is true of the comparative completeness with which the principles of syntax are treated. In fact a place was found for some points of construction that were not taken up in the earlier book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Reader: Easy Selections for Beginners The way of the beginner in Latin is only too often confined to those subjects where the faculties of the mind, aside from memory, find little chance for devel opment. For a year pupils spend long hours in end less drill on the rules of grammar, on declensions and conjugations, and on the perplexities of syntax. It is not strange, therefore, that numerous attempts have been made to assist the beginner to an opportunity now and then for refreshing his mind, and at the same time for applying his new acquirements. Those have succeeded best, I believe, who have kept most closely to the things of antiquity, described °in the language of ancient Rome. Pupils recognize the modern tone of present-day topics discussed in English-like Latin, and they are not satisfied, nor are they much helped. The Fables in this Reader are the old ones, simpli fied for beginners. The Short Stories, gathered here and there, have also been freed from difficulties. The Tales of Early Rome are from Livy and have been adapted to pupils who have not yet gone far along the course. And, finally, although the selec tion from Ovid has been turned into prose and shorn of its grammatical difficulties, it is believed that the charm of the story itself has not suffered.
