Download or read book Classical Hollywood Film Cycles written by Zoe Wallin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which Hollywood film cycles from the 1930s to the 1960s were shaped by their surrounding industrial contexts and market environments, to build an inclusive conception of the form, operation, and function of film cycles. By foregrounding patterns of distribution, spaces of exhibition, and modes of consumption as key components of the form and mechanics of cycles, this book develops a methodology for defining cycles based on an analysis of the industry and trade discourse. Applying her unique framework to six case studies of different cycles, Zoe Wallin blends a wide range of historical sources to analyze the many cultural, social, political, aesthetic, and industrial contexts relevant to these films. This book makes an important contribution to the literature in the area of film historiography, and will be of interest to any scholars of film studies, history and media studies.

Download or read book Escaping the Progress Trap written by Daniel Brian O'Leary and published by Geozone Communications. This book was released on 2005-12-31 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Progress Trap? As the name implies, it is the condition in which we find ourselves when science, technology and industry create more problems than they can solve. Often inadvertently. Many experts have warned about the resulting ecological crisis. The prophets of doom have spoken and alarm bells have sounded. Some critics are even optimistic, but they have no plan. They have not provided a detailed analysis of why humans fall into progress traps. They have not put forward what is necessary for emerging from them. Until now. Find out why societies have a tendency to become entangled in their own ingenuity. Then learn how well-equipped we humans are for resolving the environmental quandary, and other traps. Finding our way out of this predicament is a vital idea, when we learn how to nurture and use our talent for creative-problem-solving.

Download or read book Eleanor Robson Belmont written by Kevin Lane Dearinger and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Mrs. August Belmont died in 1979, just before her 100th birthday, she was remembered as a philanthropist and advocate for the arts, especially the Metropolitan Opera, but before her triumphs as Mrs. Belmont, she had dignified the American stage for 13 glorious years as Eleanor Robson, actress. Her splendid voice, understated style, and always-evident intelligence thrilled legions of theatregoers and enthralled the best playwrights of her time, including Israel Zangwill, Clyde Fitch, and George Bernard Shaw.Despite the brevity of her career, Eleanor Robson stands as a prototype for many actresses who followed her--women who sought to control their own careers and lives, demanded artistic respect and freedom, and who, by the twenty-first century, would confidently call themselves not actresses, but actors. This is her first book-length biography, focusing particularly on her theatrical career.

Download or read book Falling Up written by Thomas Holliday and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actors know about "falling up": a split-second ignition from the wings, propelling entrance as a new character, an unwilled ascent to a different mode of being, an in-body experience that overlays preparation, opportunity, choice, or chance. Falling Up, the first and only full-length Floyd study, is a metaphor for humanity’s uncanny ability to rise from seeming disaster into rebirth. Floyd’s consistent succession of soars, stumbles, slides, or wrenches sings of triumph over odds. A modern Renaissance man, Floyd is our greatest living opera composer and librettist, a trained concert pianist, a master stage director, and a teacher. In Falling Up, Holliday offers an intimate account of the life that shaped the words and music. Combining insights from hundreds of interviews with Floyd, his family, and many of the last half-century’s greatest singers, conductors, and opera administrators, Falling Up traces Floyd’s Southern roots and the struggles and sacrifices that accompanied his rise to operatic stardom. With more than forty photographs, the detailed evolution of Floyd’s fourteen operas, and in-depth analysis of his nonoperatic works, Falling Up is essential reading for opera fans and professionals alike, a book that moves, informs, and entertains.

Download or read book Walker Evans written by Judith Keller and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1995-11-02 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walker Evans is widely recognized as one of the greatest American photographers of the twentieth century, and the J. Paul Getty Museum owns one of the most comprehensive collections of his work, including more of his vintage prints than any other museum in the world. This lavishly illustrated volume brings together for the first time all of the Museum’s Walker Evans holdings. Included here are familiar images—such as Evans’s photographs of tenant farmers and their families, made in the 1930s and later published in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men—and images that are much less familiar—such as the photographs Evans made in the 1940s of the winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers circus, or his very late Polaroids, made in the 1970s. In addition, many previously unpublished Evans photographs, and variant croppings of classic images, appear here for the first time. Author Judith Keller has written a lively, informative text that places these photographs in the larger context of Evans’s life and career and the culture—especially the popular culture—of the time. In so doing, she has produced an indispensible volume for anyone interested in the history of photography or American culture in the twentieth century. Also included is the most comprehensive bibliography on Walker Evans published to date.
