Book The Beaux of the Regency Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Beaux of the Regency Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Lewis Melville and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beaux of the Regency, Vol. 1 THE niche that the Beaux of the Regency still occupy in the minds of most people, though not, perhaps, in their esteem, shows clearly that folly, as well as wisdom or art or beauty, may bring in its train a considerable and enduring fame. Yet while to-day the names of Brummell, Petersham, Alvanley, and the rest, are household words in the vocabulary of those who have hut dipped lightly into the social annals of the Georgian era, it is astonishing how little is known of any of these men, with, possibly, the sole exception of Brummell. It is not less surprising, perhaps, that their lives and achievements have found no historian, for it cannot he doubted they make an interesting, if not always an edifying, group. There is, of course, the monumental life of Brummell by Captain Jesse, but therein the record of that worthy is embedded in a vast mass of extraneous matter. Book The Invention of the Countryside

Download or read book The Invention of the Countryside written by Donna Landry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-08-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's hunting debate began in the eighteenth century, when the idea of the countryside was being invented through the imaginative displacement of agricultural production in favour of country sports and landscape tourism. Between the Game Act of 1671 and its repeal in 1831, writers on walking and hunting often held opposed views, but contributed equally to the origins of modern ecology, while sharing a commitment to trespass that preserved common rights in an era of growing privatization.

Book Lives of Victorian Literary Figures Part III Volume 1

Download or read book Lives of Victorian Literary Figures Part III Volume 1 written by Valerie Sanders and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-17 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Gaskell, like her contemporary Emily Bronte, was from the north of England, though based in Lancashire and Cheshire rather than Yorkshire. Her first novel, Mary Barton (1848) was set in the north and was unusually realistic in its depiction of Manchester working-class life. Ruskin grew up in suburban London; in later life, he settled in the Lake District . Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle moved in the opposite direction - from rural Scotland to London's Cheyne Walk. This title focuses on writers for whom 'the centre' was a pressing concern. The three volumes that comprise a set are facsimile reproductions of contemporary biographical material. They include letters, memoirs, poems and articles on three outstanding Victorian literary persons: John Ruskin, Elzabeth Gaskell and the Carlyles.
