Book Selections From Boswell s Life of Johnson Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections From Boswell s Life of Johnson Classic Reprint written by James Boswell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Boswell's Life of Johnson Samuel johnson has the almost unique distinction of being an author who is better known than his works. He is admittedly the dominant figure in later eighteenth century English literature. Professor Barrett Wendell speaks of him and Ben Jonson as two men who have pre eminently guided the course of letters, each in his own age. Taine speaks of him as a strange character the most esteemed of his time, a sort of literary dictator, and adds that his criticism becomes law; men crowd to hear him talk; he is the arbiter of style. Yet Rasselas, the Vanity of Human Wishes and even the Lives of the Poets are likely to remain unopened, while the works of his certainly lesser contemporary, Goldsmith, who looked up to John son as a patron and protector, are widely read. The rea son for this neglect may be found again in Taine, who says of his style: Classical prose attains its perfection in him as classical poetry in Pope. Art cannot be more con summate or nature more forced and of his matter: His truths are too true; we already knew his precepts by heart. Indeed, both substance and style are out of date. It is not necessary, then, for the pupil to read much of the works of Johnson a chapter or two of Rasselas and a typical passage from the Lives of the Poets, on Addison, for instance are quite sufficient to show the philosophy, the critical judgment, and the style of Johnson as a writer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Johnson's Works: Life, Poems, and Tales Part 1 Volume 2 By Samuel Johnson Whatever he read, his tenacious memory made his own. In the fields, with his schoolfellows, he talked more to himself than with his companions. In 1725, when he was about sixteen years old, he went on a visit to his cousin Cornelius Ford, who detained him for some months, and, in the mean time, assisted him in the classics. The general direction for his studies, which he then received, he related to Mrs. Piozzi. "Obtain," says Ford, "some general principles of every science: he who can talk only on one subject, or act only in one department, is seldom wanted, and, perhaps, never wished for; while the man of general knowledge can often benefit, and always please." This advice Johnson seems to have pursued with a good inclination. His reading was always desultory, seldom resting on any particular author, but rambling from one book to another, and, by hasty snatches, hoarding up a variety of knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Johnson: Lives of Milton and Addison One had better be palsied at eighteen than not keep company with such a man. With these words Dempster consoled Boswell when he complained that drinking port and sitting up late with Dr Johnson affected his nerves. Hundreds feel the same enthusiasm still, and Sit up late to keep company with him in the graphic pages of Boswell. What, then, is the secret of Johnson's charm? Above all things it is the unique character of the man that com pels attention - a personality absolutely different from all others, striking in figure and in manners, great in know ledge and literary power, commanding in conversation and argument. He was original, not in that he was a champion of new ideas, but in that he could defend Old ideas in a novel manner. Thus it is Johnson the man rather than Johnson the writer that the world remem7 bers. His sayings, his mannerisms, his very weaknesses have a way of clinging to us for good. Those who remember his determination that the Whig dogs should not have the best of it, number far more than those who recall him as the author of Irene' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Essays of Dr. Johnson, Vol. 1 If to the common run of readers Cowley was to be anything more than a name, it was only in a selection from his poems that he could still be known. Like all other writers, be had had to pass through futurity protected only by his genius,4 and his genius had been found too weak to bear up the whole weight of the burthen. If the little bark was to sail in safety along the stream of time, it had become needful to throw overboard the larger part of the cargo. Book Johnson s Lives of the Poets

Download or read book Johnson s Lives of the Poets written by Samuel Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Johnson's Lives of the Poets: Milton; Edited With Notes, Etc In the opinion of Macaulay the best of the Lives are those of Cowley, Dryden, and Pope, and the worst is that of Gray. The comparative inferiority of the Life of Milton is not owing to Johnson's defective knowledge of his subject. Certain errors of fact the life of course does contain. In some cases later enquiry has disproved statements received as true when Johnson wrote. The investigations of the genealogists of the present century have superseded his account of Milton's family and pedigree. The researches of Professor Masson amongst the State-papers have revealed the exact history of Milton's Latin secretaryship. The publication of Milton's 'treatise of Christian Doctrine has thrown new light on the development of his religious opinions. There are however other cases in which Johnson has fallen into error through negligence. He attributes to Ellwood instead of to Phillips the statement that Milton could not endure to hear Paradise Regained' judged in ferior to Paradise Lost, ' and expands that statement into the assertion that the poet preferred Paradise Regained' to Paradise Lost.' On another occasion he refers to Phillips a's authority for a statement which is made by Birch. He carelessly writes of Milton as making the ten books of Paradise Lost' into twelve by the division of the seventh and twelfth. He misdates one of Milton's works, and appears to confound two of his pamphlets into one. These are trifling slips, the great defect of Johnson's life of Milton is the persistent depreciation of the poet's character which pervades it throughout. At the time, and ever since. Book The Lives of the Poets

Download or read book The Lives of the Poets written by Samuel Johnson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'If a man is to write A Panegyrick, he may keep vices out of sight; but if he professes to write A Life, he must represent it really as it was.' In the last of his major writings, Samuel Johnson looked back over the previous two centuries of English Literature in order to describe the personalities as well as the achievements of the leading English poets. The major Lives - of Milton, Dryden, Swift, and Pope - are memorable cameos of the life of writing in which Johnson is as attentive to human frailty as to literary prowess. The shorter Lives preserve some of Johnson's most piercing, critical judgements. Unsentimental, opinionated, and quotable, The Lives of the Poets continues to influence the reputations of the writers concerned. It is one of the greatest works of English criticism, but also one of the most humanly diverting. This selection of the Lives of ten of the most important poets draws its text from Roger Lonsdale's authoritative complete edition. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
