Download or read book The Beachcomber s Wife 16pt Large Print Edition written by Adrian Mitchell and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It should have been a paradise, but paradise is what you lose, it is what you might have had. An elderly woman who has lived for many years on a tropical island off the Queensland coast with her beachcomber husband waits for help from the mainland. For three harrowing days, alone. He has died, his body lies in their cabin just up from the beach, and while she awaits help she reviews her reclusive life there, of nearly 25 years with him. She is a woman with a glint in her mind's eye. The Beachcomber's Wife draws upon the published writings of E.J. Banfield, who lived an isolated life with his wife Bertha on Dunk Island through the first decades of the twentieth century. He made very little reference to her in his work (Confessions of a Beachcomber and others). This account imagines what it might have been like from her point of view. It follows Banfield's practice, of fact cemented with fiction.

Download or read book North Pole Tenderfoot written by Doug Hall and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would Doug Hall follow in Robert Peary's 1909 sled tracks to the North Pole, despite the grueling terrain and temperatures between 15 and 62 degrees below zero? His goal was to resurrect the spirit of Peary's journey in a world increasingly driven by instant gratification, short term business focus, and lack of sustained dedication to great causes. Peary succeeded where some 578 expeditions before him had failed. North Pole Tenderfoot is Doug's attempt to let the reader experience what is possible when one does what Peary did: think big.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book T J Ryan written by Denis Joseph Murphy and published by Univ. of Queensland Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is timely that this new edition should be published in the historic first year of the Labor government of Wayne Goss, a leader who has already invited comparisons with T. J. Ryan. T. J. Ryan was a natural leader. In 1915 he was elected Labor Premier of Queensland against the turbulent background of World War I. His Labor government set the foundations for Labor rule in Queensland which lasted until the 1957 split. Denis Murphy's fascinating biography concentrates on Ryan the politician, a consummate tactician and leader of great ability whose untimely death in the early 1920s robbed him of the chance to lead the nation. During his years as Premier of Queensland and Deputy Leader of the Federal Australian Labor Party, Ryan passed major reforms in labor laws, from the rending issues of conscription to censorship and industrial unrest. This biography recaptures the tumultuous times of the early twentieth century, set against the struggle for power and political intrigue.
Download or read book American Wood Type 1828 1900 written by Rob Roy Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first and most authoritative history of wood type in the United States is now reissued in paperback. This book tells the complete story of wood type, beginning with the history of wood as a printing material, the development of decorated letters and large letters, and the invention of machinery for mass-producing wood letters. The 19th-century heyday of wood type is explored in great detail, including all aspects of design, manufacture, and marketing, and the evolution of styles. Many related trades interacted with wood type production; the book examines the influence of lithography, letterpress, metal-plate and wood engraving, sign painting and calligraphy, poster printing, and type-founding. Long out of print, the book is still regarded by scholars and designers as an invaluable resource for a rich legacy of typographic art. More than 600 specimens of wood type are classified and annotated, as are more than 100 specimens of complete fonts. This reissue includes a new foreword by David Shields, Design Curator of the Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, discussing the renewed interest in the subject since the mid-1990s as well as ongoing research into the history of wood type.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 10,000 men, women, and children were placed on farms in Australia during the 1920s as part of the soldier plan after World War II. Of the 12,000 families settled in Victoria, a majority failed to establish themselves, and the cost of this ill-conceived plan was enormous, both to the people and the state. This innovative social history focuses on the experiences of the settlers as they struggled against appalling conditions to make ends meet and maintain their dignity.

Download or read book Taming the Great South Land written by William J Lines and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taming the Great South Land is the first full-length landscape history of an entire continent occupied by one nation. It is also, in William Lines's telling, a brutal and controversial story. Examining the ways European society rapidly, radically transformed Australia's physical and human landscapes, the author writes candidly of repeated environmental devastation--from the early slaughter of seals and whales to the destructive spread of sheep, through gold rushes and land settlement to British nuclear tests and the modern mining and timber industries. Lines shows how Enlightenment ideas of progress, economic growth, and development were reconstructed on Australian soil, and how the promise of the conquest of nature became a mockery in fact, resulting in the mass dislocation and destruction of indigenous populations. This shocking narrative, thoroughly researched and accessibly written, combines environmental, social, and political history to hard-hitting effect.
