Book excerpt: Parzival is a medieval romance by the German poet, knight, and troubadour Wolfram von Eschenbach. The story belongs to the most significant examples of medieval literature. The poem, dated to the first quarter of the 13th century, tells about the legendary knight of the Round Table Parzival (Percival in English) and his long search for the Holy Grail following his initial failure to achieve it. The story begins with Parzival's birth and early life, continues with his attempts to find King Arthur and join him, together with his friend Gawan and concludes in meeting and marriage to the love of his life Orgeluse. Although the poem is dedicated to the spiritual and physical search for Saint Grail, its central narrative is love, chivalry, and courtship that reward the hero with a happy completion of his deeds.

This is a must have volume for anyone really wanting to make the most of their German holiday. Color photos throughout. The author is a resident of Munich so he knows his subject well. "Of the three Germany guidebooks I used, this one was the most useful and not only because it covers so many places that the others simply ignored. Although you never get 10% off for showing this book, it has enough sensible advice on how to shave unnecessary expenses off the budget without ever feeling or acting like a cheapskate. The accommodation lists are very useful.--Jane S., Amazon.com Great to see a guidebook on Germany in English by an author who realizes that Germany is more than Berlin, the Rhine, and Bavaria. Not that the well-known areas are neglected but I particularly enjoyed the wide coverage on the former East German regions.--Steven, Amazon.com. The Romantische Strase (Romantic Road) is the most popular of Germany's roughly 150 themed vacation routes. It connects several romantic sights along a 210-mile route from Wurzburg on the Main to Fussen at the foot of the Bavaria Alps. En route, it passes romantic towns, hamlets, castles, and churches. This section describes some of the stops along the way; some are worth stopping over for a few hours, while others can literally be seen in minutes

Book Anglo Norman Castles

Download or read book Anglo Norman Castles written by Robert Liddiard and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide-ranging studies offer an in-depth analysis of castle-building 11th - 12th centuries and place castles within their broader social and political context. The castles of the eleventh and twelfth centuries remain among the most visible symbols of the Anglo-Norman world. This collection brings together for the first time some of the most significant articles in castle studies, with contributions from experts in history, archaeology and historic buildings. Castles remain a controversial topic of academic debate and here equal weight is given to seminal articles that have defined the study of the subject while at the same time emphasising newer approaches to the fortresses of the Anglo-Norman aristocracy. The studies in this volume range from discussions of the residential and military role of the castle to architectural symbolismand royal attitudes to baronial fortification. The result is a survey that offers an in-depth analysis of castle-building during the eleventh and twelfth centuries but which also places Anglo-Norman castles within their broader social, architectural and political context.
