As I continued to study the past of this historic town, and found myself surrounded in official life by the manuscript records of those brave soldiers who fought for liberty in the hour that tried men's souls, I compiled all the authentic military rolls which I could obtain, and published my Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War. Book A Brief Narrative of the Ravages of the British and Hessians

Download or read book A Brief Narrative of the Ravages of the British and Hessians written by Varnum Lansing Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Narrative of the Ravages of the British and Hessians: At Princeton in 1776-77; A Contemporary Account of the Battles of Trenton and Princeton The manuscript which is here printed for the first time was purchased in 1901 by the Library of Princeton University at the sale of the late General William Scudder Stryker's collection. It had been given to General Stryker by Governor Charles S. Olden of New Jersey who believed it to have been handed down in his family from the day of its composition a hundred and thirty years ago. It consists of twenty-four folio numbered pages, the final paragraph of which was written on April 18, 1777. The manuscript is brown with age and has suffered severely from exposure and careless handling. It has been folded in the middle and the outer leaves have crumbled along the fold, while the upper right-hand quarters of the first and last leaves are wanting altogether, causing gaps in the first two and last two pages. The handwriting is well formed and regular, and is evidently that of an old man. The document is unsigned. General Stryker, who in his History of the Battles of Trenton and Princeton was the first to note in print the existence of the manuscript, followed the Olden family tradition by referring to it as the "diary of Thomas Olden of Princeton," Mr. Olden lived in the little frame house which is locally well known as the lodge of "Drumthwacket," the residence today of M. Taylor Pyne, Esq., and formerly of Governor Olden. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: December 1776: Just six months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George Washington and the new American Army sit on the verge of utter destruction by the banks of the Delaware River. The despondent and demoralized group of men had endured repeated defeats and now were on the edge of giving up hope. Washington feared "the game is pretty near up."Rather than submit to defeat, Washington and his small band of soldiers crossed the ice-choked Delaware River and attacked the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey on the day after Christmas. He followed up the surprise attack with successful actions along the Assunpink Creek and at Princeton. In a stunning military campaign, Washington had turned the tables, and breathed life into the dying cause for liberty during the Revolutionary War.The campaign has led many historians to deem it as one of the most significant military campaigns in American history. One British historian even declared that "it may be doubted whether so small a number of men ever employed so short a space of time with greater or more lasting results upon the history of the world."In Victory or Death, historian Mark Maloy not only recounts these epic events, he takes you along to the places where they occurred. He shows where Washington stood on the banks of the Delaware and contemplated defeat, the city streets that his exhausted men charged through, and the open fields where Washington himself rode into the thick of battle. Victory or Death is a must for anyone interested in learning how George Washington and his brave soldiers grasped victory from the jaws of defeat.

Book Modern Battles of Trenton Vol 2

Download or read book Modern Battles of Trenton Vol 2 written by William Edgar Sackett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Battles of Trenton, Vol. 2: From Werts to Wilson With the story of the first issue of "Modern Battles of Trenton" and that embraced in these pages, I have set down the civil and political history of New Jersey for the last half century. But in the preparation of this new edition I have endeavored to write so that one may catch up the skein from one epoch to the other and read on understanding without recourse to the earlier publication. When I say from one epoch to another I speak advisedly. Without any planning of mine to that end, the whirligig of Time has made each of these publications epochal. While I was engaged years ago in tracing for the first volume the story of the Democratic regime that controlled the state for nearly two decades following the Civil War, the gods were sowing the seeds of its fall; and by the time I was ready for press the culmination had come. So when I entered on the text for this newer story of a long Republican regime I expected to tell in my closing chapter of a new Republican triumph, - when along came Woodrow Wilson to close the second epoch with a Democratic sweep that rounded out my Republican story to its finale. Though I cannot but recognize the political aspects of the narratives in the two books, I wish to acquit myself of any possible suspicion of having been influened in the preparation of either by my personal party leanings, if I have any. I have tried to remember that History is the storehouse of only the Truth, and to know no party in my writing. Book The Battles of Trenton Princeton

Download or read book The Battles of Trenton Princeton written by BiblioLabs, LLC. and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battles of Trenton and Princeton were not only morale boosters for a low Continental Army, they also provided valuable experience for both soldiers and commanders in how to engage the British Army. Using the cover of darkness to cross the Delaware River on Christmas night, Washington set in motion a chain of events that resulted in the successful capture of both the city of Trenton from Colonel Johann Rall and his Hessian troops, as well as the city of Princeton from Lieutenant Colonel Charles Mawhood. Trenton and Princeton fueled the necessary Continental fires to put the Revolution into full swing as the Rebels gained steam in their fighting and in their cause.

Download or read book Washington s Crossing written by David Hackett Fischer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006-02-01 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six months after the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution was all but lost. A powerful British force had routed the Americans at New York, occupied three colonies, and advanced within sight of Philadelphia. Yet, as David Hackett Fischer recounts in this riveting history, George Washington--and many other Americans--refused to let the Revolution die. On Christmas night, as a howling nor'easter struck the Delaware Valley, he led his men across the river and attacked the exhausted Hessian garrison at Trenton, killing or capturing nearly a thousand men. A second battle of Trenton followed within days. The Americans held off a counterattack by Lord Cornwallis's best troops, then were almost trapped by the British force. Under cover of night, Washington's men stole behind the enemy and struck them again, defeating a brigade at Princeton. The British were badly shaken. In twelve weeks of winter fighting, their army suffered severe damage, their hold on New Jersey was broken, and their strategy was ruined. Fischer's richly textured narrative reveals the crucial role of contingency in these events. We see how the campaign unfolded in a sequence of difficult choices by many actors, from generals to civilians, on both sides. While British and German forces remained rigid and hierarchical, Americans evolved an open and flexible system that was fundamental to their success. The startling success of Washington and his compatriots not only saved the faltering American Revolution, but helped to give it new meaning.

Pursued by British forces, Washington and his remaining 5,000 men resolved on a risky strike against the British and Hessian positions across the Delaware River. Crossing the river, Washington took the Trenton garrison for the loss of only four men, before outflanking Cornwallis' 8,000-strong force and marching on Princeton. His military reputation established, Washington's victory restored American morale, giving the battered continental army a pair of much needed victories, and turned the tide of the war. Accompanied by maps and illustrations, this slim yet detailed volume is ideal for anyone interested in American military history and modern warfare.
