Excerpt: ... evidently the same formation as the Norwegian and the British continental shelves, and lies at very similar depths, both of which facts might seem difficult to explain if the land has been recently submerged as much as 60 or 80 m. It might however, be possible, that during the glacial periods the sea-level stood rather lower on the Faeroes than in Norway. It is for instance probable, that the volume of the ocean was reduced by the formation of the great ice-sheets; how much the sea-level sank in this manner cannot be computed; but it may have been appreciable if we assume that the European, American, Siberian, and perhaps also the Antarctic ice ages were simultaneous. The fall of sea-level was in Norway apparently much checked by the isostatic movements of the land due to the pressure of the great ice-caps. On the Faeroes these isostatic movements may not have been very great, as the ice-cap cannot have been very thick; thus the total result may have been that the fall of sea-level caused a considerable lowering of the shoreline on its coasts. There is still another possibility: if we assume that the Scandinavian British platform has actually been depressed by the weight of the inland ice during its greatest extension, we must also assume that at the same time there has been an isostatic movement of the bottom of the Norwegian sea in the opposite direction, and thus may the ridge on which the Faeroes are situated have been actually raised. The absence of a typical broad coast platform on the tvheather-beaten Orkneys and the Shetland Islands is also interesting. It was above (p. 96) pointed out that a narrow coast platform with numerous skerries and shoals probably extends along the western coast of Scotland and the Hebrides, this regions...

"This ice is of a wonderful nature. It lies at times quite still, as one would expect, with openings or large fjords in it; but sometimes its movement is so strong and rapid as to equal that of a ship running before the wind, and it drifts against the wind as often as with it." Book The Physical Oceanography of the Arctic Mediterranean Sea

Download or read book The Physical Oceanography of the Arctic Mediterranean Sea written by Bert Rudels and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-09-19 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Oceanography of the Arctic Mediterranean Sea describes the circulation and the processes in the Arctic Mediterranean, how our present knowledge has developed, and presents recent changes caused by a gradually warmer global climate. The Arctic Mediterranean Sea has been intensively studied in recent years, especially during the fourth International Polar Year, 2007–09, and we have become increasingly aware of the changes presently taking place. This book collects and presents newly acquired knowledge and sets it in perspective to previous studies. Authored by a world-renowned leader in the field, this book explores the role of this small but important sea in the global oceanic circulation and climate—a must-read for researchers and students in the fields of oceanography and climate science. Relates observed features to active processes and provides sufficient background information to understand the theoretical explanations Presents the Arctic Mediterranean Sea in the context of global ocean circulation and climate Presents a modern, comprehensive, and coherent treatment of Arctic (and subarctic) physical oceanography

Book Physical Oceanography of the Frontal Zones in Sub Arctic Seas

Download or read book Physical Oceanography of the Frontal Zones in Sub Arctic Seas written by A.G. Kostianoy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-10-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title presents the systematization and description of accumulated knowledge on oceanic fronts of the Norwegian, Greenland, Barents and Bering Seas. The main fronts of the Norwegian, Greenland and Barents Seas are part of the climatic North Polar Frontal Zone (NPFZ). The work is based on numerous observational data, collected by the authors during special sea experiments directed at the investigation of physical processes and phenomena inside certain parts of the NPFZ and in the northern part of the Bering Sea, on archive data of the USSR Hydrometeocenter and other research institutions, as well as on a wide scientific literature published in Russian and Western editions. The book contains general information on the oceanic fronts of the Subarctic Seas, brief history of their investigation, state of the knowledge, as well as detailed description of the thermohaline structure of all frontal zones in the Norwegian, Greenland, Barents and Bering Seas and of neighboring fronts of Arctic and coastal origin. Special attention is given to the study of the multifrontal character of the NPFZ and of peculiarities of its internal structure at different locations, to the description of diverse oceanic features observed in the NPFZ, as well as to some characteristics of the horizontal and vertical fine structure of hydrophysical fields in the NPFZ. The main features of the northern Bering Sea's summer ecohydrodynamics are investigated with the help of three-dimensional direct and inverse models.

Book The Geology of Continental Margins

Download or read book The Geology of Continental Margins written by C.A. Burk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continental margins of the world constitute the most impressive and largest physiographic feature of the earth's surface, and one of fundamentally great geological significance. Continental margins have been the subject of increasing attention in recent years, an interest focused by a body of new data that has provided new insights into their character. This interest was further stimulated by the realization that, in addition to the abundant living resources, continental margins contain petroleum and mineral resources that are accessible with existing technology. This realization, along with their basic geological importance, has provoked further research into the nature of continental margins throughout the world. A summary of these findings, as related to both recent and ancient continental margins, is the subject of this book. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. However, the stimulus for the present volume eventually arose from a Penrose Conference arranged through the Geological Society of America. This conference was attended by specialists of numerous disciplines and from throughout the world, many of whom insisted that such a volume would be both timely and useful. Consequently, we agreed to undertake the task of assembling this book, with the objectives of making it available as soon and as inexpensively as possible.
