He claims that while the distribution of time over the syllables between the accents might conceivably be quite irregular, as a matter of fact it is regular, and usually conforms to what the musician calls Triple Time. This Time he accordingly considers the real basis of English rhythm, in prose as well as verse, while admitting exceptions both through irregularities and through the occasional intru sion of Common Time, in either its duple or quadruple form. The difference between prose and verse he describes shortly thus (end of In poetry [scilicet verse], variation within the foot is limited; in prose it is free. Metre [this word here used for the first time] may occur in prose, but it must not be perceptible, as it is in verse. Book English Versification

Download or read book English Versification written by James C. Parsons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Versification: For the Use of Students In preparing this book, the author has been guided by the experience of many years in the class-room. No attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive treatise on the fascinat ing subject of prosody. The controversy of scholars as to the degree in which quantity prevails as a basis for English rhythm has been studiously avoided. It seems sufficient to follow the prevalent habit of our best poets, as evidenced in their utterance and their works, of assigning to accent the distinguishing characteristic of English verse. Given this as a basis, it is possible to go on and add all the charms of phonetic richness and depth of which the language is capable. Book excerpt: To be a musician is to "speak music." When you have something to say and the means to say it, your gestures and sounds become both meaningful and free. Offering an innovative, comprehensive approach to musicians' health and wellbeing, Integrated Practice gives you the tools to combine total-body awareness with a deep and practical understanding of the rhythmic structure of the musical language, so that you can use the musical text itself as your guide toward psychophysical and creative freedom. Integrated Practice comes with more than a hundred and fifty exercises demonstrated by video and audio clips on an extensive companion website that will inform your daily practice, improvising, rehearsing, and performing. With this array of resources for every learning style, Integrated Practice is the essential handbook to personal achievement in successful, expressive musical performance.
