Book The Foundations of Grammar

Download or read book The Foundations of Grammar written by Jonathan Owens and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arabic grammatical tradition is one of the great traditions in the history of linguistics, yet it is also one that is comparatively unknown to modern western linguistics. The purpose of the present book is to provide an introduction to this grammatical tradition not merely by summarizing it, but by putting it into a perspective that will make it accessible to any linguist trained in the western tradition. The reader should not by put off by the word ‘medieval’: Arabic grammatical theory shares a number of fundamental similarities with modern linguistic theory. Indeed, one might argue that one reason Arabic theory has gone unappreciated for so long is that nothing like it existed in the West at the time of its ‘discovery’ by Europeans in the 19th century, when the European orientalist tradition was formed, and that it it only with the development of a Saussurean and Bloomfieldian structural tradition that a better perspective has become possible.

Book Natural Language Processing of Semitic Languages

Download or read book Natural Language Processing of Semitic Languages written by Imed Zitouni and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in Natural Language Processing (NLP) has rapidly advanced in recent years, resulting in exciting algorithms for sophisticated processing of text and speech in various languages. Much of this work focuses on English; in this book we address another group of interesting and challenging languages for NLP research: the Semitic languages. The Semitic group of languages includes Arabic (206 million native speakers), Amharic (27 million), Hebrew (7 million), Tigrinya (6.7 million), Syriac (1 million) and Maltese (419 thousand). Semitic languages exhibit unique morphological processes, challenging syntactic constructions and various other phenomena that are less prevalent in other natural languages. These challenges call for unique solutions, many of which are described in this book. The 13 chapters presented in this book bring together leading scientists from several universities and research institutes worldwide. While this book devotes some attention to cutting-edge algorithms and techniques, its primary purpose is a thorough explication of best practices in the field. Furthermore, every chapter describes how the techniques discussed apply to Semitic languages. The book covers both statistical approaches to NLP, which are dominant across various applications nowadays and the more traditional, rule-based approaches, that were proven useful for several other application domains. We hope that this book will provide a "one-stop-shop'' for all the requisite background and practical advice when building NLP applications for Semitic languages.

Book Language Processing and Acquisition in Languages of Semitic Root Based Morphology

Download or read book Language Processing and Acquisition in Languages of Semitic Root Based Morphology written by Joseph Shimron and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-04-28 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts together contributions of linguists and psycholinguists whose main interest here is the representation of Semitic words in the mental lexicon of Semitic language speakers. The central topic of the book confronts two views about the morphology of Semitic words. The point of the argument is: Should we see Semitic words’ morphology as “root-based” or “word-based?” The proponents of the root-based approach, present empirical evidence demonstrating that Semitic language speakers are sensitive to the root and the template as the two basic elements (bound morphemes) of Semitic words. Those supporting the word-based approach, present arguments to the effect that Semitic word formation is not based on the merging of roots and templates, but that Semitic words are comprised of word stems and affixes like we find in Indo-European languages. The variety of evidence and arguments for each claim should force the interested readers to reconsider their views on Semitic morphology.

Book Current Issues in Morphological Processing

Download or read book Current Issues in Morphological Processing written by Ram Frost and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present special issue is the third volume produced by a group of researchers who convene every two years to discuss the role of morphology in word recognition. It includes thirteen experimental papers, all devoted to morphological processing. The volume explores a variety of languages such as Arabic, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Serbo-Croatian, and Spanish. The methods of investigations include single-word recognition, masked, cross-modal, and long-term priming, the monitoring of eye movements, or the use of computer simulations, with both the processing of speech and print being explored. The present volume, being the third consecutive one on morphology, provides a longitudinal perspective on the theoretical issues currently under debate in the field of morphological processing, and also sets the scene for future work in this domain.
