Book excerpt: Fresh from a war with rival rancher Miguel Aguilar, and still licking family wounds, Martin Baron and his son, Anson, go their separate ways as Jory Sherman continues the epic saga of the Barons. Martin heeds the call of the Texas Rangers, hoping to restore honor to his native Texas as the storm of war quickly approaches. News from the east speaks of a long and drawn out conflict between the Union and the Confederacy. Though Martin never believed in slavery and holds no loyalty to the Confederacy, the Rangers seem like his best bet to defend his home, and perhaps give him the opportunity to bring Aguilar to justice. Unlike his father, whom he sees as abandoning the ranch in its time of greatest need, Anson stays behind to pick up the pieces after the war. He wishes to bring the Barons' ranch to new glory, but to do so, he'll need to capture the elusive white bull, El Blanco Diablo, to sire his herd. And of course there's Lorene Purvis, the beautiful woman who's pledged her love to Anson; she may be the key to a new start. The trail soon grows rocky for the Baron men. When Aguilar escapes after a bloody ambush, he has nothing but revenge against the Baron family festering in his head. Meanwhile, Anson's vaqueros have abandoned the Baron ranch, and a band of Apache have set their sights on making it their own the only way they know how . . . by killing the man who runs it. The Barons have always been respected, but as rough times roll in, they're forced to reevaluate where their friends' loyalties lie, while also questioning their own. One thing's for sure, they won't lay down without a fight, and they'll do anything to defend The Baron Honor.

A baron trapped by honor, a lady bound by loyalty, both caught in a trap set by a ruthless king . . . Stripped of his lands and title for another man's lie, Tré Devaux, Third Baron of Brayeton, is given a chance to win it all back if he accepts the post as High Sheriff of Nottingham. His first task: to rid the land of the Saxon outlaws who undermine the Norman rule . . . or face the wrath of his vengeful king. Tré is determined to let no one stand in his way, not even the captivating Lady Jane Neville, a known sympathizer to the Saxon cause whose unbridled spirit evokes feelings in Tré he thought were long buried. A simple metalsmith and farmer turned warrior, he has become the most unlikely of heroes to the conquerors of his own people, the Caerfolk. Yet there is a growing faction of Jorskians who believe that if he were truly anointed as Chosen One by the Gods, then the immortals would have given him the Sword of Light as proof of his calling. Missing for generations, the sword is more myth than reality. But Devlin knows where to find it. Lost in battle after the Jorskians’ brutal massacre of Caerfolk, it has remained in Duncaer, a souvenir of one of the land’s darkest days. Feeling more than ever a pawn of fate—and a plaything of the Gods who drive him—Devlin must return to the land of his birth, back to the people who have denounced him. For he is bound by an oath he has no choice but to obey...a promise he may have to die to keep.

Book The Curate s Awakening The Lady s Confession The Baron s Apprenticeship Complete Trilogy

Download or read book The Curate s Awakening The Lady s Confession The Baron s Apprenticeship Complete Trilogy written by George MacDonald and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-07 with total page 1183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thomas Wingfold, Curate or The Curate's Awakening" is the first novel of the series that begins with the story of a compliant and lifeless curate in the Church of England and the profound changes that happen in his life and the people around him. Thomas Wingfold is a clergyman who is losing belief in the faith, but he goes through many transformations as the story unfolds. "Paul Faber, Surgeon or The Lady's Confession" is the sequel to The Curate's Awakening and it tells the story of a village doctor and a proven atheist. His friend and village curate, Thomas Wingfold is trying to bring him closer to the Church, but constantly ends up failing in those attempts. Doctor believes that only victories and tragedies of life can bring one to Jesus. However, after one accident, Faber saves life of a beautiful woman and they fall in love, but her secret past comes in between. "There and Back or The Baron's Apprenticeship" is the third and final novel that completes the series. Another story about finding faith in God follows a life-changing journey of Baron Richard from skeptical atheist to a true believer. The main character sets quite an example of manhood for young people. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll. His writings have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors including W. H. Auden, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Walter de la Mare, E. Nesbit and Madeleine L'Engle.

This book was released on 2002-07-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Identities, Heroic Nationalisms, and the Gothic Novel, 1764-1824 considers three interlocking developments of this period: the emergence of the Gothic novel at a time when national upheavals required the construction of a new nationalist identity, the Gothic novel's redefinition of heroes and heroism in that nationalist debate, and changes within class and gender as well as audience and author relations. The scope of this study extends beyond the confines of the novel proper to include chapbooks and illustrated redactions.
