Book excerpt: Alexandria Findahl's father was her hero. He was a famous Bard, known throughout Adelay for his catchy tunes and haunting ballads and she wanted to follow in his footsteps. She started her training with him at the age of five and was determined to become as good, maybe even better, than he was. She was not interested in love, the domestic duties of being a wife and a mother bored her. She thought her mother weak and unfulfilled and vowed to never let a man weaken her or stop her from pursuing her dreams. However, when she was a teenager she was tempted briefly with the one man who ever interested her, Daniel Thacher. They shared one embrace that awakened passion inside of her that she had only heard about. She thought that he felt the same but when he did not pursue the relationship she hardened her resolve and continued on with her dream. Set to take on the country with her talents, she completes her training and is about to embark on her first journey into her new profession when she discovers that her father has gone missing. He has been leading a secret life all this time as a member of a secret society tasked with protecting the King and the citizens of Adelay and now his enemies have abducted him. Alexandria has no idea where to even start looking for him or how to save him. Daniel Thacher comes back into her life, telling her that he also belongs to this secret society and will help her save her father. She accepts his help, warily, and along with her two new best friends, the group sets out into the country determined to save her father. Alexandria thought she was over Daniel but with each passing day her infatuation grows, tempting her with passion that she has only had a taste of and that she finds she wants to sample again. Daniel Thacher, is a wizard and known all over the country for his acts of kindness and bravery. His family is well known for their power and they have long held a friendship with Gregor Findahl and his family. Daniel found Alexandria very attractive when he was younger and even once indulged in a kiss with her that set him afire; however, he was engaged at the time and felt terrible for betraying he woman he had promised to marry. Years later, he has joined the same secret society her father is a member of and is no longer promised to anyone. When Gregor goes missing he seeks out Alexandria's help with an ulterior motive in mind. He has never been able to get her off his mind and he is hoping that she feels the same way. Will he be able to make her remember the passion they both felt when they kissed that day? Can he complete their mission and save his dear friend with her help or will his feelings for Alexandria cloud his judgement and cause death to come seeking them all?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the acclaimed suspense novel The Forger returns to the dangerously rarified world of literary forgery in this tense sequel. When a scream shatters the summer night outside their country house in the Hudson Valley, reformed literary forger Will and his wife Meghan find their daughter Maisie shaken and bloodied, holding a parcel her attacker demanded she present to her father. Inside is a literary rarity the likes of which few have ever handled, and a letter laying out impossible demands regarding its future. After twenty years on the straight and narrow, Will finds himself ensnared in a plot to counterfeit the rarest book in American literature: Edgar Allan Poe’s Tamerlane, of which only a dozen copies are known to exist. Facing threats from his former nemesis Henry Slader, Will must rely on the artistic skills of his older daughter Nicole to help create a flawless forgery of this Holy Grail of American letters. Part mystery, part case study of the shadowy side of the book trade, and part homage to the writer who invented the detective tale, The Forger’s Daughter draws readers into the diabolically clever—and, for some, inescapable—world of literary forgery.

Lord Colum of Sevenwaters is blessed with six sons: Liam, a natural leader; Diarmid, with his passion for adventure; twins Cormack and Conor, each with a different calling; rebellious Finbar, grown old before his time by his gift of the Sight; and the young, compassionate Padriac. But it is Sorcha, the seventh child and only daughter, who alone is destined to defend her family and protect her land from the Britons and the clan known as Northwoods. For her father has been bewitched, and her brothers bound by a spell that only Sorcha can lift. To reclaim the lives of her brothers, Sorcha leaves the only safe place she has ever known, and embarks on a journey filled with pain, loss, and terror. When she is kidnapped by enemy forces and taken to a foreign land, it seems that there will be no way for her to break the spell that condemns all that she loves. But magic knows no boundaries, and Sorcha will have to choose between the life she has always known and a love that comes only once. Juliet Marillier is a rare talent, a writer who can imbue her characters and her story with such warmth, such heart, that no reader can come away from her work untouched. Book excerpt: The Bagel Bards are a group of poets varied in age, race, gender, who meet, share poems, discuss poetry, drink lots of coffee, chew a bagel if so desired, sometimes sell their books. The atmosphere is generous and open to all, and you don’t have to be a poet to attend. What I find most exciting about the Bards, people here are not conscious of reputation and achievement, but love the poem and good friendly unpretentious talk. That doesn’t mean that pretensions don’t exist if that’s what you desire, but the coffee is strong, the people sincere and are publishers of small press magazines, pamphlets and books. If you want to be in an atmosphere that is intelligent without self-involved, convoluted literary talk of people who need to prove themselves and announce themselves as artists, here is a place to find the pleasure that good literary company may offer. — Sam Cornish, Poet Laureate of Boston, MA

Book The Bard

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Crawford
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2021-06-08
  • ISBN : 1400832845
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book The Bard written by Robert Crawford and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No writer is more charismatic than Robert Burns. Wonderfully readable, The Bard catches Burns's energy, brilliance, and radicalism as never before. To his international admirers he was a genius, a hero, a warm-hearted friend; yet to the mother of one of his lovers he was a wastrel, to a fellow poet he was "sprung . . . from raking of dung," and to his political enemies a "traitor." Drawing on a surprising number of untapped sources--from rediscovered poetry by Burns to manuscript journals, correspondence, and oratory by his contemporaries--this new biography presents the remarkable life, loves, and struggles of the great poet. Inspired by the American and French Revolutions and molded by the Scottish Enlightenment, Burns was in several senses the first of the major Romantics. With a poet's insight and a shrewd sense of human drama, Robert Crawford outlines how Burns combined a childhood steeped in the peasant song-culture of rural Scotland with a consummate linguistic artistry to become not only the world's most popular love poet but also the controversial master poet of modern democracy. Written with accessible elan and nuanced attention to Burns's poems and letters, The Bard is the story of an extraordinary man fighting to maintain a sly sense of integrity in the face of overwhelming pressures. This incisive biography startlingly demonstrates why the life and work of Scotland's greatest poet still compel the attention of the world a quarter of a millennium after his birth.
