Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.

This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten percent of book profits will go to the Susan Angeline Collins Scholarship at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. Get ready to delve into a world of hardship, challenge, and fulfillment. Explore the life of African American Susan Angeline Collins and be inspired by her faith, pioneering attitude, missionary successes, unfailing courage, and belief in everyone’s right to an education. As Miss Collins’ life unfolds before you, relevant social issues affecting people of color are intertwined. Issues examined include economics, education, gender, race, religion, and Africa’s colonization from her 1851 birth in Illinois until her 1940 death in Iowa. Her resourcefulness in overcoming obstacles during her 33-year commitment to missionary service in the Congo Delta Region and Angola is compelling. Miss Collins’ story demonstrates the difference one person can make in the lives of an unknown number of women and children, some orphaned and homeless and others escaping early marriage and subservience. Her leadership is evidenced when starting a girls’ school in the northern Angolan high plateau region years before Mary Jane McLeod Bethune initiated her school for African-American girls in Florida. You will be gratified to discover how this diminutive bundle of energy achieved recognition as a stalwart missionary, leader, teacher, nurse, construction manager, and surrogate mother to “her girls.”
Download or read book Jewels Of Stringology Text Algorithms written by Maxime Crochemore and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-09-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “stringology” is a popular nickname for text algorithms, or algorithms on strings. This book deals with the most basic algorithms in the area. Most of them can be viewed as “algorithmic jewels” and deserve reader-friendly presentation. One of the main aims of the book is to present several of the most celebrated algorithms in a simple way by omitting obscuring details and separating algorithmic structure from combinatorial theoretical background. The book reflects the relationships between applications of text-algorithmic techniques and the classification of algorithms according to the measures of complexity considered. The text can be viewed as a parade of algorithms in which the main purpose is to discuss the foundations of the algorithms and their interconnections. One can partition the algorithmic problems discussed into practical and theoretical problems. Certainly, string matching and data compression are in the former class, while most problems related to symmetries and repetitions in texts are in the latter. However, all the problems are interesting from an algorithmic point of view and enable the reader to appreciate the importance of combinatorics on words as a tool in the design of efficient text algorithms. In most textbooks on algorithms and data structures, the presentation of efficient algorithms on words is quite short as compared to issues in graph theory, sorting, searching, and some other areas. At the same time, there are many presentations of interesting algorithms on words accessible only in journals and in a form directed mainly at specialists. This book fills the gap in the book literature on algorithms on words, and brings together the many results presently dispersed in the masses of journal articles. The presentation is reader-friendly; many examples and about two hundred figures illustrate nicely the behaviour of otherwise very complex algorithms.

Download or read book Shaping World Architecture written by Vimalin Rujivacharakul and published by Bloomsbury Visual Arts. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaping World Architecture examines Sir Banister Fletcher's A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method and 120 years of reactions to this classic book. From Victorian England and the British Empire, through two World Wars and into 20th century postcolonial landscapes, it shows how 'Banister Fletcher' can be used as a lens to explore the mechanisms of architectural history, global knowledge exchange, and the emergence of regional architectural histories. This is a book about the translation of architectural ideas in a global context and how generations of historians and architects responded to Fletcher's analyses, as much as it is about Banister Fletcher's book itself. Featuring new archival research and intriguing anecdotes, it probes the dissemination of the multiple editions 'Banister Fletcher' worldwide. It demonstrates how early editions of the book created a two-way transfer of knowledge between Fletcher and his readers in Asia, North America, and Europe, and how their invigorated search for new forms of architectural evolution charted a significant milestone in the development of regional histories of architecture. Carefully balancing responses to 'Banister Fletcher' – both favourable and fiercely critical – this book offers a re-reading of a classic text that is still read worldwide today, and provides insights for students into interpreting key texts of architectural history. Shaping World Architecture is valuable for all scholars and researchers interested in the history and historiography of world architecture, and in the methodologies of architectural history.
