And Gideon Bannerman is missing. ‘Colin Batrouney’s new novel is unexpected and alluring. Balancing out satire which hits home with feelings which run deep is something only truly accomplished writers can achieve – and he does.’ - DAVID HARE ‘A wicked invention that is very, very funny.’ - DAVID MARR ‘Batrouney’s new novel is an exquisite joy, one of the most pleasurable books I have read in ages. The joy is in the elegance and assurance of the writing, in the sophistication and wit of the satire, and in the richly imagined characters and narrative. What a pure delight! I wanted to stay within its pages for the longest time.’ - CHRISTOS TSIOLKAS ‘The Bannerman Shortlist is a beauty. It’s clever, original and compelling. It’s the best contemporary novel I’ve read for quite some time.’ - ANDREA GOLDSMITH

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lancashire Giant tells the story of a nine-year-old cotton weaver who went on to carve out two extraordinary careers for himself. In the first, David Shackleton became a truly dominating presence in the Edwardian trade union movement, was the third MP to be elected under the banner of the Labor party, and played a critical role in the infancy of the party. His second career, begun at Winston Churchill’s prompting in 1910, took him to the summit of the British civil service and to active participation in the deliberations of Lloyd George’s War Cabinet. Prominent union officials have frequently become government ministers, but none has repeated Shackleton’s achievement in becoming the permanent secretary of a ministry. "This distinctive career is presented and analysed in meticulous detail by Ross Martin... The result is a thorough and rounded portrait strengthened by some suggestive analysis of Shackleton as a private individual."—Labor History "An accessible, detailed, analytic and sympathetic study."—English Historical Review

  • ISBN : 1835537332
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Birkenhead Park written by Robert Lee and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was officially opened on Easter Monday, 5th April 1847, Birkenhead park became the first municipally funded park in Britain. It was a pioneer in the development of urban public parks, designed for use by everyone, irrespective of social class, ethnicity or age. In terms of town planning, it demonstrated the importance of including green infrastructure in urban development as a vital contribution to public health and wellbeing. Paxton’s design for the park was heralded as ‘a masterpiece of human creative genius’ : it served as a vehicle for the global transmission of the English landscape school and led to the creation of numerous public parks everywhere, most famously Central Park, New York, incorporating of many of Paxton’s design features. This book addresses a long-standing gap in the Park’s historiography. Regarded as ‘one of the greatest wonders of the age’, it is an important contribution to nineteenth-century landscape history with a local focus, but of international significance. But it seeks to interpret the Park’s development until 1914 within a political and cultural context, drawing on economic and social history, as a means of explaining why it was not until the late-nineteenth century that it finally became a focal point for recreation and public health.

Book excerpt: 316 facts about WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin. What’s “3:16 Day”? It’s a day when someone gives you a load of crap, and you give it back with a certain one-fingered gesture. “316 Day” is a day when you can open up a can of whoop-ass on anybody you want. A day when four-letter words are acceptable and the speed limit is only a suggestion. “3:16 Day” is a day that epitomizes Stone Cold Steve Austin, the toughest S.O.B. ever to lace up a pair of boots. Austin launched WWE’s Attitude Era the moment he won the 1996 King of the Ring Tournament and quoted iconic scripture on his bible-thumping opponent: “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!” Austin 3:16 celebrates the WWE legend’s finest moments in the ring, on the microphone, and behind the wheel of a beer truck, a Zamboni, and a cement mixer. This book collects 316 Stone Cold facts, figures, and catchphrases that uncover little known facets about sports entertainment’s Texas Rattlesnake, including how he conceived the “Stone Cold” moniker, what he really thinks of adversaries Mr. McMahon, The Rock, and Bret “Hit Man” Hart, and why he has the WWE Universe shouting “What?” all the time. Bottom line? Austin 3:16 says it all, ’cause Stone Cold said so!

In this book, sociologists Julianne Momirov and Ann Duffy explore the many forms that violence can take, from physical abuse to emotional deprivation. The victims, the theories, and the factors increasing risk are all clearly presented. Policies and programs which would address this issue -- from personal intervention to institutional reforms -- are also outlined. It reports on recent initiatives to find more successful ways to respond to the needs of victims and to rehabilitate the perpetrators.
