Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Banking System But to the student of the history of banking in the United States there is little that is radically new in the Canadian system. He finds in it many of the practices and expedients that were found excellent in the United States in the first half of the nineteenth century, and is almost persuaded that but for the civil war what is now known as the Canadian banking system would everywhere be called the American system. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Banking System: 1817-1890 If any were required, a reason - perhaps a suffi cient reason - for the present investigation might be offered in the circumstance that an essay to present in a systematic and fairly thorough manner the facts with which I have attempted to deal, has never yet appeared in print. The growth and improvement of the banking system are parts of the commercial and legislative history of Canada even less cultivated than the broader field of its economic history. Yet the course of the development ought by no means to be devoid of interest; the results in some respects are unique; and where it is now carried on the Cana dian system of banking is believed to be productive of the highest possible advantages. A second reason could well be found in relation with the banking situation of the United States. Observers in all quarters have noticed the growing necessity for reform in the currency and banking system Of this country, and have remarked the demonstration of the necessity in the frightful crisis precipitated by distrust in the value of the currency commonly used. They have noticed also, especially among those who are most deeply interested in the organization of credit, the growing conviction of this necessity - a conviction of which the last and most Significant expressions are the resolutions adopted on the 11th October, 1894, by the American Bankers' Association, in convention assembled at Baltimore. It is possible, at least, that from some account Of the Canadian banking system an American will Obtain instructive contrasts, as well in history, as in present organization and methods of operation, to the system of banking and bank legislation which has Obtained in the United States. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Banking in Canada Efforts to introduce the practice of banking into the British North American provinces were put forth as early as 1792. The "Canada Banking Company," then organized by certain English firms and Montreal merchants, was not destined long to survive its origin, although one at least of its 5-shilling notes which has been preserved (No. 6803) is proof that it exercised the function of issue. It seems to have left little trace, either in men's memories or in the records of the time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian System of Banking and the National Banking System of the United States: A Comparison With Reference to the Banking Requirements of Canada Mr. Foster's Banking Bill places before the public one of the most important questions affecting the business interests of the country with which legislators have to deal - the renewal of the Bank Charters. Discussion regarding the conditions under which banking is in future to be conducted iri Canada is mainly contributed by newspaper editors and anonymous writers, many of whom can have little practical knowledge of the business of bank ing. Their views are apt to be reflected in. Parliament by some of the members, as it is not to be supposed that many members can devote sufficient time to master the details Of such an intricate subject, and arrive at an understanding of the underlying principles. It therefore seems fitting that a contribution to the discussion should be ofi'ered by a banker, and having had many years of practical experience in the working of the two systems, I venture to ask the attention Of the public to the follow ing paper comparing the Canadian and the United States National Banking Systems. Book Canadian Banking Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canadian Banking Practice Classic Reprint written by John T. P. Knight and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Banking Practice In 1895, the Editing Committee of the Journal of the Canadian Bankers' Association consisted of Mr. J. H. Plummer, then Assistant General Manager of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Mr. J. Henderson, Assistant General Manager of the Bank of Toronto, and Mr. E. Hay, Assistant General Manager of the Imperial Bank of Canada, and to these gentlemen, and to Mr. V. C. Brown, who for many years acted as Editor of the Journal, its readers are indebted for a fund of useful knowledge, which the presentation of in book form will, it is hoped, serve to perpetuate and make easy of acquisition. The hundreds of questions received deal with nearly every possible point of practical interest likely to present itself during the daily routine of a bank. The replies given by the gentlemen named, and by their successors in office, to the questions asked of them, necessitated a thorough knowledge of banking custom and usage, and of the general principles of the law as it appertains to acceptances, cheques, deposit receipts, endorsements, letters of credit, circular notes, warehouse receipts, partnership accounts, powers of attorney, bankers' lien, forgery, negotiable instruments, bills of exchange, promissory notes, surety, etc. In instances where legal points were involved the advice of counsel was sought (the legal adviser until recently being Mr. Z. A. Lash, K.C.). "Canadian Banking Practice," as a work of reference, undoubtedly affords information upon almost every conceivable point likely to arise in the course of dealings between banks and their customers, and in addition to the knowledge of usage and custom likely to be acquired by the student of its pages, he will be given an appreciation of the general principles of the law governing banking and commercial transactions. Book The Early History of Canadian Banking Origin of the Canadian Banking System Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of Canadian Banking, Origin of the Canadian Banking System Though the Canadian system was established largely through the influence, and under the direction of persons of Scottish nationality, yet it does not follow that these persons were prejudiced in favor of Scottish examples. The richest national individuality is that which is capable of absorbing the widest range of foreign experience without losing its character istics. It is matter of common observation that the pro nounced individuality of the Scotchman is almost invariably accompanied by the widest cosmopolitanism. The Scotch man's capacity, in every region of the world, to adapt himself to circumstances, or more often to induce them to meet him half way, is proverbial, and mainly because in so doing he only intensifies his national identity. The Scotchmen who were so prominent in the early days of Canadian commerce, did not attain to that position by any special adherence to Scottish experience. Few of them had much occasion to be familiar with the mechanism of exchange before leaving their native country, otherwise Canada had never known them. Their com mercial experience was gained on this side of the Atlantic. Even after they became extensive traders, there were few occa sions in which they had any direct intercourse with their coun trymen in Scotland. The Canadian trade was almost wholly confined to New York and the New England States, and the West Indies, on this side the Atlantic, and London, with a few other English towns, on the other. 80 late as 1823 the ship ping lists show only rare arrivals from any Scottish port. J. Robertson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Historical Sketch of Canadian Banking and Currency, the Laws Relating Thereto Since Confederation, and a Comparison With British and American Systems Modern systems of banking have much in common, and this isspecially true of what may be termed English systems, in cluding under this designation those prevailing in the United States and British Colonies, as well as those in Great Britain and Ireland. In discussing, then Canadian banking and cur rency, we cannot well avoid referring frequently to British and American systems, and it is desirable that these references should take the form not only of explanation, but of comparison. In fact, our Canadian banking system, like our Canadian political constitution, is a compound of British and American elements, with a few native ingredients intermingled, and rendered necessary by our peculiar circumstances. Book The Canadian Bank of Commerce Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Canadian Bank of Commerce Classic Reprint written by Canadian Bank Of Commerce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Bank of Commerce This was completed early in 1908 and the formal removal of the Bank took place on 2nd March. The illustrations on this page show some of the old keys and bolts formerly in use in the old building, and the leather pouch in which the keys were kept. In the early days these formed the only protection which the bank had against burglary. The two keys are of English make and are believed to have been in use from the founding of the bank in 1825 until about 1881 when more modern methods were adopted. The larger of the two was the key of the main door of the building, a large wooden door some six or eightinches thick, heavily sheathed with iron, and the smaller was the key of the iron door of the vault. The vault was built of granite blocks and contained two compartments, one above the other, with sep arate doors; the top one was used for storing books and papers and the bottom for cash. After the vault had been locked and the building closed for the night the keys were placed in the leather pouch and left at the President's house by the messenger, whose duty it was to call for them at eight o'clock the next morning. The large iron pin shown in the illustration fitted into a hole in the floor of the book vault and engaged the door of the cash vault, preventing it from being opened. When the pin was inserted the head was a little below the level of the floor and a piece of plaster corresponding with the floor of the vault was placed on top of it. In this way it was hoped that it would escape detection if a burglar should succeed in forcing an entrance into the book vault, a feat which in those days was thought to be next to impossible. It is interesting to observe that on one occasion when a burglary was attempted this pin was the means of saving the fish. On a Saturday night access was gained from the next building and a hole cut in the floor of the directors' room which let the burglars into the manager's room.
