Download or read book Approximate Wilderness written by John Sweet and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are (mostly recent) poems that have grown out of the landscape of rural and small town upstate New York, out of the dying factory cities and the empty fields that connect them. The poems tend to be free-associative as opposed to linear, with images and thoughts leading one to the next in patterns that may or may not become apparent to the reader. The title of the collection is a description of the ambiguity of place, the idea that not all landscapes can be accurately mapped. The landscapes themselves (and people described) are tangled up with ordinary fears of modern day living, with the inevitability of war, the need for human contact, the futility of the individual's fight in the face of a faceless society...in short, the poems are reflections of what I see around me. They are, I would hope, not defeatist but cathartic. The anger and sense of hopelessness needs to be purged so that life can go on.

Download or read book Walking with Eve in the Loved City written by Roy Bentley and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist, 2018 Miller Williams Poetry Prize Walking with Eve in the Loved City is an ambitious collection. Using a variety of male figures—Jeff Goldblum, Ringo Starr, the poet’s uncle Billy, to name a few—these poems skillfully interrogate masculinity and its cultural artifacts, searching for a way to reconcile reverence for the father figure with a crisis of faith about the world as run by men. And yet, despite the gravity of the subjects these poems engage, this is a hopeful, frequently funny book that encourages the reader to look deeply at the world, and then to laugh if she can. Roy Bentley often accomplishes this work through a careful balancing of honesty and misdirection, as when in the poem “Can’t Help Falling in Love” the real drama of the narrative—the appearance of an affair between the speaker’s father and a drive-in restaurant carhop—operates as a backdrop for the eight-year-old speaker’s puerile attraction to the woman; or when the vampire Nosferatu (a frequent figure in the poems) materializes in a trailer park, his immortality becoming a lens through which to process the speaker’s righteous anger about wealth and poverty. God too features prominently—as does doubt. Drawing from the vernacular of his childhood, Bentley accesses the simultaneous austerity and lyrical opulence of the King James Bible to invent stories in which the last note struck is often a call to pay kinder attention. More than anything, these poems serve as humanistic advocates, using the power of narrative—film, interview, imagination, memoir—to highlight how people matter. Walking with Eve in the Loved City invites the reader to join in this watching and witnessing, to take part in renewing how we see.
Download or read book Hijito written by Carlos Andrés Gómez and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Winner of the 2020 International Book Award for Poetry. Winner of a 2019 Foreword INDIES Award for Poetry. Winner of the 2020 Indie Reader Discovery Award for Poetry. In HIJITO--selected by Eduardo C. Corral as winner of the 2018 Broken River Prize--Carlos Andrés Gómez writes of brutality and beauty with the same urgency and with a truth that burns readily; it is a collection of survival instincts. As a vital and tender exploration and deconstruction of contemporary society, his poetry engages with America's ever-changing landscape and the ways in which race, gender, and violence coalesce. Called powerful, truthful, and sublime by Cornel West, Gómez's words are a necessary paean to hope and courage in the modern world. One loss makes you feel all the other losses, writes Carlos Andrés Gómez in this searing and inquisitive collection. His attentiveness to language and to pain is unflinching. Craft and empathy are inseparable; lyrical pleasures resonate with tenderness and sorrow. The poems pull something usable from // the wreckage of performative masculinity, police brutality, and displacement. And what's usable from misery? Gómez's deft control of language--the syntax is nimble, the diction is zoetic--brings us close to the boundless resilience that helps us survive, change.--Eduardo C. Corral Gómez makes an impressive debut in this collection, singing of family, bullets, survival and smoke. This hijito is a tiny growl / at first / that blossomed / into a wail.--Tyehimba Jess, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry Striking, searching, and serious. Carlos Andrés Gómez poems often leap landscapes beyond the West and ask us to consider the history we have been taught, how we speak it and carry it in our bodies. There is an earned depth and urgency to Gómez as a poet.--Raymond Antrobus, Rathbones Folio Prize winner

Book excerpt: The poems in MORTALIA come into being at the glinting intersect of mortality and love, both personal and as reflected in the natural world. The question is not so much how can we love a person (or world) that we know is already beginning to pass away even in the moment of discovery, but rather how could we ever love in any other way.

Download or read book Theatre Symposium Vol 23 written by David S. Thompson and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The curtain rises on Theatre and Youth, volume 23 of Theatre Symposium with keynote reflections by Suzan Zeder, the distinguished playwright of theatre for youth, and presents eleven original essays about theatre’ s reflections of youth and the role of young people in making and performing theatre. The first set of essays draws from robustly diverse sources: the work of Frank Wedekind in nineteenth-century Germany, Peter Pan’ s several stage incarnations, Evgeny Shvarts’ s antitotalitarian plays in Soviet Russia, and Christopher Marlowe’ s Dido, Queen of Carthage, whose depictions of childhood comment on both the classical period as well as Marlowe’ s own Elizabethan age. The second part of the collection explores and illustrates how youth participate in theatre, the cognitive benefits youth reap from theatre practice, and the ameliorating power of theatre to help at-risk youth. These essays show fascinating and valuable case studies of, for example, theatre employed in geography curricula to strengthen spatial thinking, theatre as an antidote to youth delinquency, and theatre teaching Latinos in the south strategies for coping in a multilingual world. Rounding out this exemplary collection are a pair of essays that survey the state of the art, the significance of theatre-for-youth programming choices, and the shifting attitudes young Americans are bringing to the discipline. Eclectic and vital, this expertly curated collection will be of interest to educators and theatre professionals alike.
