After 1963 the military became increasingly dominant until Hafiz al-Asad came to power in 1970. Since then the Party has been less dominant internally but Syria itself has established a pivotal position in regional affairs. The book concludes by reviewing the prospects for Syria after Asad and the potential for a Ba’thist revival.

Batatu focuses mainly on the twentieth century and, in particular, on the Ba`th movement, the structures of power after the military coup d'état of 1963, and the era of îvfiz al-Asad, Syria's first ruler of peasant extraction. Without seeking to prove any single theory about Syrian life, he offers a uniquely rich and detailed account of how power was transferred from one demographic group to another and how that power is maintained today. Batatu begins by examining social differences among Syria's peasants and the evolution of their mode of life and economic circumstances. He then scrutinizes the peasants' forms of consciousness, organization, and behavior in Ottoman and Mandate times and prior to the Ba`thists' rise to power. He explores the rural aspects of Ba`thism and shows that it was not a single force but a plurality of interrelated groups--prominent among them the descendants of the lesser rural notables--with different social goals and mental horizons. The book also provides a perceptive account of President Asad, his personality and conduct, and the characteristics and power structures of his regime. Book excerpt: This thesis looks at the history of the Syrian Baʹth Party in the context of changes in the modern Arabic language prompted by the spread of European power and influence in the Middle East. It examines the cultural and political context of the Party's founding and the ways in which the authors of its ideology popularized their platform of Arab unity and the impact they had on Arabic political discourse in the process. Taking the Party's principle policy documents as a point of departure, this study attempts to identify the core lexicon of Ba'th ideology and trace the intellectual genealogy of each of it constitutive terms. Despite comparatively humble origins, the Baʹth Party rapidly grew into an influential international organization within two decades of its founding. Historians of modern Syrian political history have long noted discrepancies of doctrine and practice between the Party's formative years and the period following its ascendency to power in Syria in 1966. By examining continuities of language and discourse between these two periods, this study asserts that the Party's founding ideologues, though unsuccessful in their ambitions of achieving national Arab unity under the banner of socialism, accomplished nevertheless a lexical revolution in the language of politics in Syria that persists until today.

On the one hand, it seemed everything would stay the same: an Asad on top of a political system controlled by secret services and Baathist one-party rule. On the other hand, it looked like everything would be different: a young president with exposure to Western education who, in his inaugural speech, emphasized his determination to modernize Syria. This volume explores the ways in which Asad’s domestic and foreign policy strategies during his first decade in power safeguarded his rule and adapted Syria to the age of globalization. The volume’s contributors examine multiple aspects of Asad’s rule in the 2000s, from power consolidation within the party and control of the opposition to economic reform, co-opting new private charities, and coping with Iraqi refugees. The Syrian regime temporarily succeeded in reproducing its power and legitimacy, in reconstructing its social base, and in managing regional and international challenges. At the same time, contributors clearly detail the shortcomings, inconsistencies, and risks these policies entailed, illustrating why Syria’s tenuous stability came to an abrupt end during the Arab Spring of 2011.
