Download or read book When Computers Were Human written by David Alan Grier and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-16 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Palm Pilots and iPods, PCs and laptops, the term "computer" referred to the people who did scientific calculations by hand. These workers were neither calculating geniuses nor idiot savants but knowledgeable people who, in other circumstances, might have become scientists in their own right. When Computers Were Human represents the first in-depth account of this little-known, 200-year epoch in the history of science and technology. Beginning with the story of his own grandmother, who was trained as a human computer, David Alan Grier provides a poignant introduction to the wider world of women and men who did the hard computational labor of science. His grandmother's casual remark, "I wish I'd used my calculus," hinted at a career deferred and an education forgotten, a secret life unappreciated; like many highly educated women of her generation, she studied to become a human computer because nothing else would offer her a place in the scientific world. The book begins with the return of Halley's comet in 1758 and the effort of three French astronomers to compute its orbit. It ends four cycles later, with a UNIVAC electronic computer projecting the 1986 orbit. In between, Grier tells us about the surveyors of the French Revolution, describes the calculating machines of Charles Babbage, and guides the reader through the Great Depression to marvel at the giant computing room of the Works Progress Administration. When Computers Were Human is the sad but lyrical story of workers who gladly did the hard labor of research calculation in the hope that they might be part of the scientific community. In the end, they were rewarded by a new electronic machine that took the place and the name of those who were, once, the computers.

It presents the various AI-based possibilities for accelerating international efforts to safeguard the environment and conserve natural resources. The authors offer a comprehensive analysis of the emerging field of climate change in relation to Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning. The book discusses AI developments, applications, and best practices that will help us transition to a low-carbon future on both a regional and global scale. It provides case studies with analytical results pertinent to climate change and weather prediction and includes chapters with a research-oriented approach, which can encourage new developments in the field of sustainable climate and green environment. The book can be used as a primary textbook for graduate and postgraduate students in technology and science, as well as a reference for researchers, academics, and IT professionals working on climate change and sustainability initiatives.
Download or read book Design and Spirituality written by Stuart Walker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Spirituality examines the philosophical context of our current situation and its implications for design. It explores how modernity and our constricted notions of progress have contributed to today’s crisis of values, and argues for a re-establishment and re-affirmation of self-transcending priorities, together with an ethos of moderation and sufficiency. A wide range of topics are covered, including material culture and spiritual teachings; sustainability and the spiritual perspective; traditional and indigenous knowledge; technology and spirituality; notions of meaningful design; and how particular material things can have deeper, symbolic significance. There are also reflections on areas such as the language of design; busyness and its relationship to wisdom; design and social disparity; and traditional sacred practices. While not avoiding issues that are controversial, and sometimes hard-hitting, Design and Spirituality gets to the heart of the key issues affecting us today and presents them in a highly readable and accessible format. The author is a leading thinker in the field and he presents his arguments in a manner that invites the reader to reflect and think about where we are going, why we are going there and what really matters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here is...one of the most important books in modern times on Indian-white relations." ---Western Historical Quarterly "Dr. Viola has...provided us with what will undoubtedly be the last word on the topic." ---American Indian Quarterly "Diplomats in Buckskins is loaded with historical fact, but this does not make it dry reading. Beyond being extremely entertained we can be educated by a work that tells us a lot more about ourselves as a nation. We are a people of so many origins. It gives perspective to know that a part of us once negotiated with another part as separate and soverign nations." ---Minnesota History "This volume is a soundly-represented and imaginative study of the delegations of tribal representatives who visited Washington largely between 1800 and 1900....The diligence with which Dr. Viola pursued his research has enabled him to write a most rewarding book which captures the agonies and pleasures, successes and defeats, and humor and pathos of the delegates as they conferred with Washington's sympathetic bur mostly patronizing and diffident bureaucracy." ---Journal of the West

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Conference on Education, Humanities, Health and Agriculture (ICEHHA) is an annual agenda organized by the Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. This year (2022) as the second conference that is scheduled in various fields, including education, humanities, health, and agriculture, on 21-22 October 2022 at Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng. The theme carried at this conference is ‘The contribution of ICT in the fields of education, humanities, health, and agriculture post COVID-19’. This conference is inspired by the biggest challenge faced by the Indonesian nation and all countries worldwide after Covid-19 is a disruption in various fields of human life, including the fields of Education, Humanities, Health, and Agriculture. Covid-19 has changed the pattern of services in the fields of education, and health and has made global supply chains vulnerable. On the other hand, the advancement of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be an opportunity and a solution for various aspects of life after Covid-19. Therefore, a scientific forum in the form of an International Conference is needed to offer various solutions thoughts from research results or field experiences that focus on how ICT contributes to the fields of education, humanities, health, and agriculture after COVID-19. In fact, the International Conference in question is an academic discussion forum initiated by the Indonesian Catholic University of Santu Paulus Ruteng and carried out in a blinded manner (online and offline). This forum facilitates researchers, academics, professionals, practitioners, students, government officials, and all stakeholders who have the same interests around the world to disseminate the results of their studies, and conceptual or field experiences related to the contribution of ICT in the fields of education, humanities, health and agriculture in the post COVID-19. In fact, mastery of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is the key to building a superior and competent individual civilization in every field of human life after COVID-19. This conference presented a Distinguished Keynote Speaker (Jhony Gerald Plate, S.E, Minister of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia), eight keynote speakers from three different countries, including Prof. Yohanes Servatius Lon (Universitas Katolik Indonesia Santu Paulus Ruteng, Indonesia), Prof. Adrianus Ahemka (Head of Regional LLDIKTI XV), Prof. Yayah S. Kusumah (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Indonesia), Prof. I Nyoman Darma Putra (Udayana University, Indonesia), Prof. Mauro Mocerino (Curtin University, Australia), Prof. Dwi Andreas Santosa (IPB University, Indonesia), Dr. Willy Ardian Renandya (Nanyang Technological University, National Institute of Education, Singapore), and Prof. Maribeth Erb (National University of Singapore, Singapore), 174 paper presenters, and attended by more than 561 participants from university academics, researchers, professionals, practitioners, students, and government officials from all over Indonesia.
