Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Autobiography of Joseph Le Conte In justice to Professor Le Conte and to the reader a few words are necessary as to the origin of the following book and the respective parts of the author and the editor in its preparation. During the illness of his daughter in California in 1900 Professor Le Conte had many long talks with her about his early experiences and was by her urged to write out an account of them for his family. He was then too busy preparing for a trip abroad to undertake the work; but later in the year, in his old home in Columbia, S. C., whither he had gone from New York to recuperate from a severe illness that interfered with his plan of visiting Europe, his thoughts reverted to her request, and in this period of enforced leisure he began to write his reminiscences. Book Biographical Notice of Joseph Le Conte

Download or read book Biographical Notice of Joseph Le Conte written by Samuel Benedict Christy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Notice of Joseph Le Conte I predict that this autobiography will take high rank among publication of its class. Much of my information is derived from this source; and I shall endeavor, as far as possible, to let Prof. Le Conte's own words speak for him, since they will paint a picture better than any that I could outline. Joseph Le Conte was born Feb. 26, 1823, at Woodmanston plantation, Liberty county, Georgia. His father's family were Huguenots, and traced their ancestry back to Guilliaume Le Conte, born in Rouen, France, in 1659, who left Rouen in 1686, just after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, and settled in New Rochelle. One of his descendants, William, took a prominent part in the revolutionary movement in Georgia. He was a member of the "First Council of Safety" in 1775, and was on the so-called "Black List" of "those Rebel Councillors," prepared by Sir James Wright and sent to King George III. The second son of William, John Eaton Le Conte, was born in 1730. He had three sons: William, who died without issue; Louis, the father of Professor Joseph, the subject of this sketch, and of Professor John Le Conte, the physicist; and John Eaton, the father of John L. Le Conte, the distinguished naturalist. Louis, the father of Joseph, was born in New York in 1782. He graduated at Columbia College, and then studied medicine, the better to care for the slaves on his father's plantation. He returned, at the age of 28, to Liberty county, which was a Puritan colony, and very orthodox and exclusive. In 1813, he married Anne Quartermain, one of these Puritans, and a refined and lovely woman. They had four sons and three daughters, of whom Joseph was the fifth child and youngest son. Two of these sons died in early manhood, and both of the others became distinguished men. Joseph's mother died when he was only three years old, and he was brought up by his father with the most tender care. This father was a very remarkable man: a good physician, a skillful chemist and naturalist, a great hunter, fond of all manly sports, and a passionate lover of nature. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first study of its kind, The Impact of Idealism assesses the impact of classical German philosophy on science, religion and culture. This third volume explores German Idealism's impact on the literature, art and aesthetics of the last two centuries. Each essay focuses on the legacy of an idea or concept from the high point of German philosophy around 1800, tracing out its influence on the intervening period and its importance for contemporary discussions. As well as a broad geographical and historical range, including Greek tragedy, George Eliot, Thomas Mann and Samuel Beckett, and key musicians and artists such as Wagner, Andy Warhol and Frank Lloyd Wright, the volume's thematic focus is broad. Engaging closely with the key aesthetic texts of German Idealism, this collection uses examples from literature, music, art, architecture and museum studies to demonstrate Idealism's continuing influence.
