The story of the invention of the Franklin stove, the first Poor Richard's Almanac, and his experiments with electricity are all included here. Book The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

Download or read book The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin written by Benjamin Franklin and published by Voyageur Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read about the fascinating life of Benjamin Franklin, prolific philosopher, inventor, and Founding Father of the United States, in this beautifully illustrated version of his autobiography. American icon Benjamin Franklin is known for many things: he published the famous Poor Richard's Almanack, helped found the world-famous University of Pennsylvania, and was the first Postmaster General of the United States. His iconography is everywhere. His likeness adorns, among other things, the United States' hundred-dollar bill. Franklin was a wildly intriguing personality, as his autobiography makes plain. From his hoarding of his pay as a teenager to buy books, to his disapproval of habits like drinking beer, from his work as a printer, to his experiments with electricity, this is the story of Franklin's life--told as only he could tell it--in the years before the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin's writings represent a career of literary, scientific, and political efforts which extended nearly the entire eighteenth century and the birth of the United States. This heavily illustrated version of Franklin's autobiography includes his reflections on diverse questions such as philosophy and religion, social status, electricity, American national characteristics, war, and the status of women. A classic in the American canon, Franklin's autobiography is a must-read for any serious student of American history.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive and insightful compilation of Benjamin Franklin’s The Autobiography and other essays which offers an in-depth look into the life of America’s most fascinating Founding Father. Book The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin

Download or read book The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin written by Benjamin Franklin and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2016-12-11T23:08:06Z with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Franklin is a man who needs little introduction. He wore many hats over the course of his fascinating life, from that of a printer, to an inventor, to a scientist, to a politician, a founding father and statesman, and even a postmaster-general. He was famous for all of these things in his day, but he was also famed for his keen insight into people and human nature, and his sparkling talent as a conversationalist. Despite his accomplishments, Franklin seemed to keep a down-to-earth demeanor, favoring home-spun sayings and simple, direct, honest prose—the kind of prose that shines in this autobiography. The autobiography itself has a long and complex publication history. Franklin composed it in fits and spurts between 1771 and 1790, and never had a chance to complete it, let alone publish it, in his lifetime. It was first published as a poor French translation of an unrevised edition of the manuscript, and then as a heavily-editorialized and inaccurate English edition by Franklin’s son, William Temple Franklin. In 1868 John Bigelow purchased the original copy of the autobiography and published the first accurate edition, which is what subsequent publications, including this one, are based on. Though incomplete, this autobiography is a highly readable and fascinating insight into the legendary life of the man some people call the “First American.” This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

A new visual source pairing invites students to interpret Franklin’s changing image over time, through the works of two different artists. A chronology, questions for consideration, a bibliographic essay, and an index enrich students’ understanding of Franklin, eighteenth-century America, and the rags-to-riches ideal that has played, and continues to play, such a significant role in American history.

Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written.
