Book The All or Nothing Marriage

Download or read book The All or Nothing Marriage written by Eli J. Finkel and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “After years of debate and inquiry, the key to a great marriage remained shrouded in mystery. Until now...”—Carol Dweck, author of Mindset: The New Psychology of Success Eli J. Finkel's insightful and ground-breaking investigation of marriage clearly shows that the best marriages today are better than the best marriages of earlier eras. Indeed, they are the best marriages the world has ever known. He presents his findings here for the first time in this lucid, inspiring guide to modern marital bliss. The All-or-Nothing Marriage reverse engineers fulfilling marriages—from the “traditional” to the utterly nontraditional—and shows how any marriage can be better. The primary function of marriage from 1620 to 1850 was food, shelter, and protection from violence; from 1850 to 1965, the purpose revolved around love and companionship. But today, a new kind of marriage has emerged, one oriented toward self-discover, self-esteem, and personal growth. Finkel combines cutting-edge scientific research with practical advice; he considers paths to better communication and responsiveness; he offers guidance on when to recalibrate our expectations; and he even introduces a set of must-try “lovehacks.” This is a book for the newlywed to the empty nester, for those thinking about getting married or remarried, and for anyone looking for illuminating advice that will make a real difference to getting the most out of marriage today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past six decades have seen astonishing changes in the construction of sexuality as an apparatus of knowledge, and as a lived experience. Australia—like much of the West—has undergone a veritable sexual revolution in attitudes and behavior. From early sex therapy to gay marriage, the juggernaut of late modern sexuality has significantly remade Australian social and cultural life. This collection brings together the work of leading historians of sexuality, to consider sixty years of remarkable sexual and social change. Acts of Love and Lust explores the ways both heterosexuality and homosexuality were constructed—by the state, through sex education, in medicine, by the law, political activists, and in the hands of the media. Just as importantly, contributors consider the ways sexuality was experienced, not as a monolithic or imposed institution, but how it was explored and enjoyed by individual bodies across different times and spaces. The authors examine the pleasures and pains of living in sexual bodies, and explore the manifest ways that love and lust shaped Australia’s society and culture.

  • Publisher : Melbourne Univ. Publishing
  • Release : 2012-08-01
  • ISBN : 0522862284
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Responsibility written by Ghassan Hage and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of responsibility permeates social life. While it has many meanings, they often centre around questions of practical and moral accountability, culpability and liability. One can learn a great deal about a social formation by looking at the way the meanings of responsibility are deployed within it, the way they vary from one social space to another, and the way they are often at the centre of a political struggle over how we define and apportion blame. The essays in this book do more than examine such processes. Each in its own way also invites the reader to push existing assumptions about what individual, political, ecological and corporate responsibility entails.

Book Marriage Migrants of Japanese Women in Australia

Download or read book Marriage Migrants of Japanese Women in Australia written by Takeshi Hamano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the experience of Japanese women who have immigrated to Australia through marriage to a local partner. Based on long-term participant observations gathered with a Japanese ethnic association in Sydney, and on in-depth interviews with the association’s members, it examines the ways in which the women remould themselves in Australia by constructing gendered selves that reflect their unique migratory circumstances through cross-border marriage. In turn, the book argues that the women tend to embrace expressions of Japanese femininity that they once viewed negatively, and that this is due to their lack of social skills and access to the cultural capital of mainstream Australian society. Re-molding the self through conventional Japanese notions of gender ironically provides them with a convincing identity: that of minority migrant women. Nevertheless, by analyzing these women’s engagement with a Japanese ethnic association in a suburb of Sydney, the book also reveals a nuanced sense of ambivalence; a tension between the women’s Japanese community and their lives in Australia. Accordingly, the book provides a fresh perspective on interdisciplinary issues of gender and migration in a globalized world, and engages with a wide range of academic disciplines including: sociology of migration; sociology of culture; cultural anthropology; cultural studies; Japanese studies; Asian studies; gender studies; family studies; migration studies and qualitative methodologies.
