Book Korea and the Evolution of the American Australian Relationship 1947 53

Download or read book Korea and the Evolution of the American Australian Relationship 1947 53 written by Daniel Fazio and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fazio examines the significance of the US-Australian Korean engagement, 1947–53, in the evolution of the relationship between the two nations in the formative years of the Cold War. In the aftermath of World War Two, divergent American and Australian strategic and security interests converged and then aligned on the Korean peninsula. Fazio argues that the interactions between key US and Australian officials throughout their Korean engagement were crucial to shaping the nature of the evolving relationship and the making of the alliance between the two nations. The diplomacy of Percy Spender, John Foster Dulles, and James Plimsoll was particularly crucial. He demonstrates that the American evaluation of the geo-strategic significance of Korea was a significant factor in the making of the ANZUS alliance and events in Korea remained central to the evolving US-Australian relationship. Their Korean engagement showed the US and Australia had similar and overlapping, rather than identical interests, and that their relationship was much more nuanced and problematic than commonly perceived. Fazio challenges the Australian mythology on the origins of the ANZUS Treaty and presents a cautionary insight into the limits of Australia’s capacity to influence US policy to benefit its interests. An insightful read for diplomatic historians, providing greater depth to understanding the broader historical context of the trajectory of the US-Australian relationship and alliance since the beginning of the Cold War.

Book French Connection

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alexis Bergantz
  • Publisher : NewSouth Publishing
  • Release : 2021-07-01
  • ISBN : 1742245250
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book French Connection written by Alexis Bergantz and published by NewSouth Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French have long been part of the Australian story. From talented gold fields photographer Antoine Fauchery and infighting in the upper echelons of Melbourne society as to who should run Alliance Française to the Playoust family whose Australian-born sons enlisted with the French army in the First World War. French Connection paints an intricate portrait of the complex connections between the two nations. Alexis Bergantz provides a fascinating insight into how the idea of France influenced a new colony anxious to prove itself. Eager to demarcate themselves from Britain, many Australians saw France as a more cosmopolitan – and decadent – alternative to a stodgy Victorian world order. Ironically, many of the French in Australia were not exactly the crème de la crème and they too navigated a world of lofty dreams and ideas that were often a far cry from reality. But what exactly did Australian colonists see when they looked to France? How much did the French presence in the Pacific loom over such ideas? And what did the French in Australia themselves make of it all? ‘Contributes significantly to our understanding of the making of Australia and of Australian mythology and history.’ — Iain McCalman ‘French Connections provides a lively and well-researched study of the French in late nineteenth-century Australia – from escaped convicts to wealthy wool-buyers – and assesses how France perceived France and its South Pacific territories.’ — Professor Robert Aldrich, University of Sydney 'In French Connection, Alexis Bergantz transcends ‘contribution’ or ‘ethnic’ history in explaining how Frenchness in Australia was among the ingredients of an antipodean culture that has been more cosmopolitan for much longer than most imagine. This superb cultural history is as stylish as the images of France and Frenchness that it so brilliantly interrogates.' — Frank Bongiorno AM, Professor of History, The Australian National University

Book The Other Special Relationship

Download or read book The Other Special Relationship written by Jeffrey D. McCausland and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes the major findings of the conference participants over the last year. Beyond the thematic resemblance between this volume and the previous study of U.S.-UK relations, another similarity is the importance of two events in determining London and Canberra's relations with Washington. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) represent the first turning point. The British and Australian governments reacted similarly to these attacks -- immediately identifying 9/11 as a transformative moment in international relations. But the Australian Prime Minister's presence in Washington, DC, during the 9/11 terrorist attacks intensified the personal impact of the events, and within a few days his government had invoked the ANZUS Treaty to offer its full support to the United States. The second "big event" dominating both U.S.-UK relations and U.S.-Australia relations has been America's management of the Global War on Terror and, in particular, its leadership of the ongoing operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Book Understanding the Eurovision Song Contest in Multicultural Australia

Download or read book Understanding the Eurovision Song Contest in Multicultural Australia written by Jessica Carniel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first in-depth study of the Eurovision Song Contest from an Australian perspective. Using a cultural studies approach, the study draws together fan interviews and surveys with media and textual analysis of the contest itself. In doing so, it begins to answer the question of why the European song contest appeals to viewers in Australia. It explores and challenges the dominant narrative that links Eurovision fandom to post-WWII European migration, arguing that this Eurocentric narrative presents a limited view of how contemporary Australian multicultural society operates in the context of globalized culture. It concludes with a consideration of the future of the Eurovision Song Contest as Australia enters into the ‘Asian century’.

Book Australia s Asian Sporting Context 1920s 30s

Download or read book Australia s Asian Sporting Context 1920s 30s written by Sean Brawley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Australia’s sporting relationships with the Asian region during the interwar period. Until now, Australia’s sporting relationships with the Asian region have been neglected by scholars of Australian and Asian sports history, and the broader field of Australia’s Asian context. Concentrating on the period of the 1920s and 1930s – when sporting relationships between Australia and a number of Asian nations emerged in a variety of sports – this book demonstrates the depth of these previously under-examined connections. The book challenges, and complicates, the broader historiography of Australia’s Asian context – a historiography that has been strongly influenced by the White Australia Policy and the Pacific War. Why, for example, did white Australia so warmly welcome visiting Japanese sportsmen at a time when the Pacific region appeared to be inexorably sliding into a war that was informed by racial antagonisms? This book examines sporting relations between Australia and seven Asian countries (China, Japan, India, Netherlands East Indies, Philippines, Malaya and Singapore) and a range of sports including rugby, football, swimming, hockey, boxing, cricket and tennis. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
