Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Australian Abroad: Branches From the Main Routes Round the World The following notes of travel are the outcome of a long holiday taken by an Anglo-Australian, who, after twenty-five years of active occupation in Melbourne, was enabled to indulge his long-cherished desire of making a tour of the globe. Without companions, save those whom he found by the way, and unassisted by guide-books, he travelled through most of the principal countries in each of the worlds five divisions, and recorded the impressions made upon his mind by all that he saw and heard while they were still fresh. The chapters in their present shape were actually written in the localities which they describe, and thence posted to a newspaper in Melbourne. In the columns of the Argus they have appeared at regular intervals during the last three years. Thus written, the Author ventures to think that they convey a more faithful description of the scenes and people visited than if they had been subsequently elaborated from the rough material of a diary, assisted by reference to the works of other travellers. The kindly welcome eagerly accorded to them in their serial form by his fellow-colonists has induced him to offer them collectively to the acceptance of a larger public at home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Australian Abroad, Vol. 2: Branches From the Main Routes Round the World; Ceylon, India, and Egypt IN some prefatory remarks to the first volume, the author stated that he had not, in any part of the travel therein detailed, had any enlightenment from books. It has been but little otherwise with most of the travel of which the present volume tells. In Ceylon, India, and Egypt, he depended upon local information only. The experienced dragoman engaged at Alexandria for the Palestine and Syrian part of the journey rendered all references unnecessary save to the pages of a marginally-annotated Bible. The toilsome journey of six weeks through those countries was relieved only by nightly studies of that Book of books, aided by such help as the handbooks carried by fellow-travellers happened to afford. But for such occupation, varied by writing down notes of the day's impressions, such time of tent-life would have t'een far more wearisome than the same time at sea. Books of travel in the Holy Land are plenteous enough, but it is a great advantage to the traveller to have read none of them. Such was the case with the author, who, in ignorance of the opinions of others, gained his ideas only from what he personally saw and heard. Book A World History of Railway Cultures 1830 1930

Download or read book A World History of Railway Cultures 1830 1930 written by Matthew D. Esposito and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-29 with total page 2985 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A World History of Railway Cultures, 1830-1930 is the first collection of primary sources to historicize the cultural impact of railways on a global scale from their inception in Great Britain to the Great Depression. Its dual purpose is to promote understanding of complex historical processes leading to globalization and generate interest in transnational and global comparative research on railways. In four volumes, organized by historical geography, this scholarly collection gathers rare out-of-print published and unpublished materials from archival and digital repositories throughout the world. It adopts a capsule approach that focuses on short selections of significant primary source content instead of redundant and irrelevant materials found in online data collections. The current collection draws attention to railway cultures through railroad reports, parliamentary papers, government documents, police reports, public health records, engineering reports, technical papers, medical surveys, memoirs, diaries, travel narratives, ethnographies, newspaper articles, editorials, pamphlets, broadsides, paintings, cartoons, engravings, photographs, art, ephemera, and passages from novels and poetry collections that shed light on the cultural history of railways. The editor’s original essays and headnotes on the cultural politics of railways introduce over 200 carefully selected primary sources. Students and researchers come to understand railways not as applied technological impositions of industrial capitalism but powerful, fluid, and idiosyncratic historical constructs.
