Download or read book Audio Visual Industries and Diversity written by Luis A. Albornoz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-20 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects critically on issues of diversity, access, and the expansion of digital technologies in audio-visual industries, particularly in terms of economics and policies. It brings together specialists in cultural diversity and media industries, presenting an international and interdisciplinary collection of essays that draw from different fields of studies – notably Communication, Economics, Political Science and Law. Among the topics discussed are: the principle of diversity as a goal of cultural and communication policies, the assessment of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity, free trade agreements and the conception of cultural goods and services they advance, the challenges faced by the production, circulation and consumption of cultural content through the Internet, the role algorithms play in the organization and functioning of online platforms, Netflix and the hegemony of global media. The approach is a critical understanding of audio-visual diversity, that aims to transcend specific issues like media ownership, ideas portrayed or modes of consumption as such, to focus on a more balanced distribution of communicative power. This volume is an essential read for scholars and researchers in Communication Studies, Economy of Culture, International Relations and International Law, as well as policy makers, journalists specialized in media and culture, and managers of public and private institutions involved in the development of cultural and communication policies. Postgraduate students will find it a key reference point.

Sofia, a naive but ambitious Swedish girl whose mission is to present Libya to the Western world of big business via the pages of the Wall Street Journal's magazine SmartMoney, finds herself facing one setback after another as she learns to navigate Gaddafi's Libya, where nothing is what it appears to be. She discovers that she is watched at every turn. A love affair proves to be both thrilling and dangerous, as Sofia gradually realizes that the country's most powerful men have ways to control even people's personal lives. Moving with determination through the corridors of power, consumed by her desire to succeed and to be part of something bigger than herself, Sofia remains blissfully unaware of the minefield she has walked into.

Book Composing Audiovisually

Download or read book Composing Audiovisually written by Louise Harris and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the Coen Brothers’ Barton Fink have in common with Norman McLaren’s Synchromy? Or with audiovisual sculpture? Or contemporary music video? Composing Audiovisually interrogates how the relationship between the audiovisual media in these works, and our interaction with them, might allow us to develop mechanisms for talking about and understanding our experience of audiovisual media across a broad range of modes. Presenting close readings of audiovisual artefacts, conversations with artists, consideration of contemporary pedagogy and a detailed conceptual and theoretical framework that considers the nature of contemporary audiovisual experience, this book attempts to address gaps in our discourse on audiovisual modes, and offer possible starting points for future, genuinely transdisciplinary thinking in the field.

Book Holisms of communication

Download or read book Holisms of communication written by James McElvenny and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central pillar of contemporary communication research is the analysis of filmed interactions between people. The techniques employed in such analysis first took on a recognizably modern form in the 1970s, but their roots go back to the earliest days of motion picture technology in the late nineteenth century. This book presents original essays accompanied by written responses which together create a dialogue exploring early efforts at audio-visual sequence analysis and their common goal to capture the "whole" of the communicative situation. The first three chapters of this volume look at the film-based research of Gestalt psychologists in Berlin as well as psychologists in the orbit of Karl and Charlotte Bühler in Vienna in the first decades of the twentieth century. Most of these figures – along with many other Central European scholars of this era – were driven into exile in the United States after the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s. This scientific migration led to the cross-pollination of communication studies in America, an outcome visible in the leading project in interaction research of the mid-twentieth century, the Natural History of an Interview. The following two chapters examine this project in its historical context. The volume closes with a critical edition of a treasure from the archives: the transcript of a speech delivered by Ray Birdwhistell, a key participant in the Natural History of an Interview project and founder of kinesics.

Book When Music Takes Over in Film

Download or read book When Music Takes Over in Film written by Anna K. Windisch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access collection deals with musical moments in film as one of the most pivotal and compelling issues of current film music research. Musical moments as defined by Amy Herzog occur when a musical number inverts the normal relationship between the image track and the soundtrack in a film in such a way that what we see is determined by what we hear. As one potential approach, this definition provokes a variety of perspectives to investigate the disruptive potential of these moments and numbers as a creative device in the production of audiovisual narratives. In this sense, the book responds to a need for an anthology that introduces students as well as scholars of cinema, musicology, media studies and cultural studies more broadly, to recent discourses in film music scholarship. The volume includes contributions by early career researchers as well as by established experts in the fields of musicology, film studies, media studies, and cultural studies, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration in film music research.

Book Introduction to Audiovisual Archives

Download or read book Introduction to Audiovisual Archives written by Peter Stockinger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, audiovisual archives and libraries have become very popular especially in the field of collecting, preserving and transmitting cultural heritage. However, the data from these archives or libraries – videos, images, sound tracks, etc. – constitute as such only potential cognitive resources for a given public (or "target community"). They have to undergo more or less significant qualitative transformations in order to become user- or community-relevant intellectual goods. These qualitative transformations are performed through a series of concrete operations such as: audiovisual text segmentation, content description and indexing, pragmatic profiling, translation, etc. These and other operations constitute what we call the semiotic turn in dealing with digital (audiovisual) texts, corpora of texts or even entire (audiovisual) archives and libraries. They demonstrate practically and theoretically the well-known "from data to meta-data" or "from (simple) information to (relevant) knowledge" problem – a problem that obviously directly influences the effective use, the social impact and relevancy and therefore also the future of digital knowledge archives. It constitutes, indeed, the heart of a diversity of important R&D programs and projects all over the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine crucial issues for audiovisual cataloging-from a variety of perspectives! This vital book addresses both current and historic issues related to audiovisual materials and cataloging. It covers the current cataloging rules for sound recordings (popular music and nonmusic recordings), videorecordings (including DVDs), electronic resources (whether accessed locally or remotely), three-dimensional objects and realia, and kits. Three historical articles chronicle the history of audiovisual catalog in general, the history of cataloging computer files, and the history of The Thesaurus for Graphic Materials. The Audiovisual Cataloging Current provides case studies that show: how the National Library of Medicine produces, collects, and catalogs non-print materials the differences between the Moving Image Genre-Form Guide and Library of Congress Subject Headings, with recommendations for improving LCSH as a tool and an exhaustive list of LCSH terms how libraries and organized cataloging groups developed the Chapter 9 descriptive cataloging rules in AACR2 how the Westchester Library System created a user-friendly online catalog for audiovisual materials how the Illinois Fire Service Library improved firefighters’subject access to nonprint fire emergency materials how the National Library of Medicine promotes audiovisual formats and much more!

Book Audiovisual Speech Processing

Download or read book Audiovisual Speech Processing written by Gérard Bailly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we speak, we configure the vocal tract which shapes the visible motions of the face and the patterning of the audible speech acoustics. Similarly, we use these visible and audible behaviors to perceive speech. This book showcases a broad range of research investigating how these two types of signals are used in spoken communication, how they interact, and how they can be used to enhance the realistic synthesis and recognition of audible and visible speech. The volume begins by addressing two important questions about human audiovisual performance: how auditory and visual signals combine to access the mental lexicon and where in the brain this and related processes take place. It then turns to the production and perception of multimodal speech and how structures are coordinated within and across the two modalities. Finally, the book presents overviews and recent developments in machine-based speech recognition and synthesis of AV speech.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a phenomenological approach to film sound and film as a whole, bringing all sensory impressions together within the body as a sense of movement. This includes embodied listening, felt sound and the audiovisual chord as a dynamic knot of visual and auditory movements. From this perspective, auditory spaces in film can be used as a pivot between an inner and an external world.

Book Audiovisual Quality Assessment and Prediction for Videotelephony

Download or read book Audiovisual Quality Assessment and Prediction for Videotelephony written by Benjamin Belmudez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-27 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work presented in this book focuses on modeling audiovisual quality as perceived by the users of IP-based solutions for video communication like videotelephony. It also extends the current framework for the parametric prediction of audiovisual call quality. The book addresses several aspects related to the quality perception of entire video calls, namely, the quality estimation of the single audio and video modalities in an interactive context, the audiovisual quality integration of these modalities and the temporal pooling of short sample-based quality scores to account for the perceptual quality impact of time-varying degradations.
