Book Tectonic Evolution of the Moroccan High Atlas A Paleomagnetic Perspective

Download or read book Tectonic Evolution of the Moroccan High Atlas A Paleomagnetic Perspective written by Pablo Calvín and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-29 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a significant amount of structural, paleomagnetic and magnetic fabric data in the Central High Atlas (Morocco). The authors thoroughly described and analyzed the present-day structure of this intraplate chain through 22 of cross-sections, potential field data analysis and 3D reconstruction. In addition, the authors propose a palinspastic reconstruction of the structure of the basin at 100 Ma (i.e., post-extension and pre-compression) to finally evaluate its Mesozoic and Cenozoic geodynamic evolution. This books presents (1) a unique three-dimensional model at the chain scale, (2) an analysis of the ca. 100 Ma remagnetization, to perform palinspastic restorations of most representative structures, (3) as well as the interpretation of the magnetic fabrics in order to unravel the tectonic or deformation setting that the rocks underwent in different parts of the basin. This book is of interest to structural geologists in Northern Africa, the Mediterranean and Iberia, as well as to those interested in inverted intraplate basins and paleomagnetists from around the planet. Also, this book is intended to help students to understand better the geological evolution of the Atlas and therefore Morocco and surrounding areas.

Book Continental Evolution The Geology of Morocco

Download or read book Continental Evolution The Geology of Morocco written by André Michard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morocco is one of the most fascinating lands in the world from the point of view of its geological structure and evolution. Our knowledge on the geology of the country has been greatly improved during the last decades, based on numerous seismic profiles and boreholes, seismological analysis of focal mechanisms, seismic tomography, gravimetric/geodetic modelling and, on the other hand, based on a big National Program of Geological Mapping including modern geochemical analyses (trace elements) and reliable isotopic datings (39Ar-40Ar, U-Pb zircon, Sm-Nd, etc). Moreover, a number of academic studies have been performed in relation with the increasing number of Moroccan universities. Accordingly, there was an utmost urgency to undertake a new treatise of Moroccan geology which could substitute for the classical Eléments de géologie marocaine, published in 1976 by A. Michard in the Notes et Mémoires du Service géologique du Maroc (re-edited twice since 1976, with more than 6000 copies sold, and... translated in Japanese for engineers!). A new treatise has been prepared between April 2006 and July 2007 under the coordination of A. Michard, assisted by O. Saddiqi, and A. Chalouan, by a wide panel of authors from Morocco, France or Belgium among the best connoisseurs of the country. In order to emphasize the general interest of the book, we finally retain the following title: Continental Evolution: The Geology of Morocco. Structure, Stratigraphy, and Tectonics of the Africa-Atlantic-Mediterranean Triple junction. The editing and production of this book was supported by the following organisations: The Geological Society of France (SGF) The National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco (ONHYM) The International Lithosphere Program (ILP)

Book Travels in the Atlas and Southern Morocco

Download or read book Travels in the Atlas and Southern Morocco written by Joseph Thomson and published by . This book was released on 1889 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In introducing this book to the reader, little need be said. It is nothing more than what it pretends to be - a Personal Narrative of Exploration. It does not claim to be a book on Morocco, and consequently may appear in many respects to be very defective. To write such a book was originally my ambition when I turned my attention to that remarkable country, but the abrupt and premature conclusion of my travels has made me perforce alter my intention, and devote myself to recording only something of what we saw and experienced in the parts in which we travelled. It has, moreover, been as much my object to sketch pictures as to chronicle facts. For the same reason this book has been made a personal narrative, with its inevitable frequent use of the first person singular or plural"--Preface.

Excerpt: ...us among the snow-wreaths, and speedily we were on the summit of Taurirt, at an elevation of 11,180 feet. It was somewhat annoying to find our view blocked to the north by the Adrar-n-Iri, which rose in a flat-topped mass from 500 to 1000 feet above us. We could, however, look down on the glen of Titula. From the point we had attained we were enabled to guess with greater approach to accuracy the height of the Atlas in our vicinity. To the west, on the opposite side of the Tizi-n-Teluet, there was no mistaking the fact that the central ridge rose far above us. The large amount of snow which still lay on its top and extended far down its sides was in itself sufficient proof. In that region, and including Jebel Glauwi, part of which we could just see, I calculate that the Atlas attains a height of at least 13,000 feet. Farther west the general elevation does not exceed 1 2,000 feet, and here and there may be even a little less, till it rises once more over Reraya. Eastward probably no point rises above I2,000, if so much, with the possible exception of Jebel Aiachi east of Demnat, and near the head of the Tessaout the height sinks to 10,000 feet or less. Of the extensive view which spread out before us it would be tedious to speak again. It was exactly what we had seen from the Tizi-n-Teluet, but with a wider horizon, the isolated mass of Jebel Unila and the range-like elevation of the Anti-Atlas--a name which I retain for convenience--thrown in. More interesting, certainly more pleasing, was it at the moment to discover some lovely tufts of veronica growing in the shelter of the rocks, and several gooseberry bushes among the crevices. Having completed our observations, we commenced our descent. On our way down we employed ourselves...

Book North African Cretaceous Carbonate Platform Systems

Download or read book North African Cretaceous Carbonate Platform Systems written by Eulàlia Gili and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume arises from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on 'North African Cretaceous rudist and coral formations and their contributions to carbonate platform development , which was held in Tunisia, on 13-18 May, 2002. It was convened by M. El Hedi Negra (Universite 7 Novembre de Carthage, now Universite de Tunis El Manar, Tunisia) and Eulalia Gili (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain). The aims of the ARW were: (1) to review and critically assess currently available data on rudist/coral formations in North African Cretaceous carbonate platforms, and their correlations, and to integrate these data with other studies around the Mediterranean; (2) to place the findings in a global context, noting both similarities with other regions of platform development as well as local differences, and (3) exploring possible reasons for these; and to help promote the creation of a vibrant peri-Mediterranean collaborative research community, embracing researchers from the entire region, to carry forward this ambitious research programme. Twenty-two presentations (oral and poster) provided both topical reviews (covering rudist evolution, and ecology, mineralogical changes, applications of strontium isotope, and graphic correlation methods, and platform typology) as well as regional syntheses (Tunisian reservoirs, Moroccan platform history, Tunisian platforms and rudist/coral facies, Algerian platforms, and Egyptian platforms). Fifteen of these presentations are expanded here as papers. The workshop was attended by 24 academic staff, 4 geologists from the oil industry, plus several observers and students.
