Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bedorough was a prolific author and The Atheist may stand out as his strangest piece of work. This book is set up as one very long poem and yet is also a complete treatise on atheism. Bedorough begins the book by narrating the story of another man. Whether or not the man is real or fictional for the purposes of storytelling is not clear. Whether or not he claims it is another man to protect himself from potential backlash is also not clear. The poem begins: "These rugged rhymes make no pretence as story, nor seek to celebrate a hero's glory. The atheist whose life inspired my pen lived, at least outwardly, like other men. 'Twere vain his physical adventures to narrate, more to his mental moods these lines relate." Bedborough is essentially saying that he won't relay a familiar tale but the thoughts of the atheist. It is almost certain that by the end of the book Bedborough is hoping to either sway readers into agreeing with his atheist friend, or is hoping to show that the man was a fool. I guess it is up to the reader as to which to believe which ultimately depends on the strength of the prose by the author. Can a story be told with no action and only thoughts of an individual? Bedorough attempts to prove that it is possible in The Atheist. Overall, this book is an interesting read for someone looking to explore psychology and spirituality from a new perspective. This book is also interesting for readers looking to review an alternative form of storytelling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atheist's Mass, and Other Stories Lo Colonel Chabert, which would well have deserved a place in those Scones do la Vie so scantily repre sented in the Come'dz'e, has other attractions. It reminds us of Balzac's sojourn in the tents of Themis, and of the knowledge that he brought therefrom; it gives an example of his affection for the {doe fixe, for the man with a mania; and it is also no inconsiderable example of his pathos. Book The Natural History of Atheism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural History of Atheism Classic Reprint written by John Stuart Blackie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold piece of work, The Natural History of Atheism by John Stuart Blackie explores the constructs of theism, atheism and polytheism in minute detail. Spread across six chapters, the book initially treads through a section called Presumptions which postulates the underlying premise of the author. John Stuart Blackie effortlessly weaves an engrossing narrative against the backdrop of different religious beliefs. The deliberations transcend cultures and borders to rope in Greek polytheism and Buddhism, providing a number of riveting causes for atheism, which unfold throughout the length of the book. The The Natural History of Atheism is a great insight in to why certain groups do not believe in the existence of God - For John Stuart Blackie these reasons are underpinned by traits that include ignorance, pride and moral turpitude among others. The last section of the book dwells on atheism due to reaction and a disbelief in Christianity. The author is able to successfully distinguish between different contexts and settings to provide logical explanations for rise of atheism across multiple religions. The Natural History of Atheism is hard hitting and straightforward in its approach. With an already well-established professor and man of letters as its author this work is full of piquant wit, yet the narrative is decidedly structured, as John Stuart Blackie unfolds his most cogent arguments at the right moments. If not for tracing the roots of atheism and its underlying causes, readers would be pleased with The Natural History of Atheism by John Stuart Blackie for its deep insights into different religions. This book will cater to a larger audience as it is premised on universal issues in the realm of religion and belief systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How a Modern Atheist Found God IN the following pages the author has tried to give a true and faithful account of his own actual experience. When Science and Historical Criticism are making such inroads on the old orthodox forms of belief, there will, doubtless, be many who, to the First Part of the book, can furnish a more or less similar experience of their own. But it is the Second Part that is really significant, for it describes the way in which a Positive Atheist, step by step, and by Reason alone, was compelled to abandon that position for a glorious unshakable Faith in the Infinite Truth, Love, and Goodness of God. His life was in the evening shadows now, His outward form to set, his soul to rise; And, by the wrinkles on his jaded brow, 'Twas visible in life's bold enterprise He had not let his days pass by for nought, But seized the time, and for earth's knowledge sought. He'd read of all the pomp of Syria's kings, How they had flourished in the days gone by; But all their glory now in memory sings, Only the ruined city now is nigh; All else has fled - pride, pomp are in the dust; So perish all who but in self have trust. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atheism in Philosophy: And Other Essays The moment we begin to speculate about the universe, there arises the question Of origin. Phi losophy, even atheistic philosophy, cannot stop short Of the primordia rerum; it wants to know unde Natura creet res, auctet alatque. The arch-atheist of antiquity could not rest in a given phenomenal world, but pushed his inquiry, says his great commentator,1 extra flammantia moenia mundi. The question Whence? Is found to be involved in the questions What? And How? And here' it is that philosophic atheists differ among themselves almost as widely as they dif fer from theists. I select as illustrations two prominent examples, an ancient and a modern, representing two Opposite types, -- Epicurus and Schopenhauer. Book My Path to Atheism Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Path to Atheism Classic Reprint written by Annie Wood Besant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Annie Besant, My Path to Atheism is one of the most well known works of this notable British writer and women's rights activist. In this collection of essays written over a five-year period, Besant traces her path to atheism while simultaneously outlining her theosophist philosophies. The first essay presented in this collection, On the Deity of Jesus of Nazareth was written before Besant had officially parted with the Church of England. It is a signpost marking the author's final split with Christianity, and is an appropriate first essay in this book. The essay relies heavily on the author's knowledge of the stories of The Bible, as she displays what she interprets as weaknesses in the story of Jesus. Many of the essays in this collection are written in a similar vein to the first. Besant was clearly a scholar of the Bible, and she is thus able to form compelling arguments against many of the stories and theories of Christianity. Later essays see Besant writing persuasively against religious education and blind faith in a set of religious values. On the Nature and the Existence of God is perhaps the most important essay of the collection, in which the author most clearly outlines her argument for atheism. "We know nothing beyond Nature," Besant states, "We judge of the future by the present and the past." My Path to Atheism is an essential work by one of the most noted atheists of the early twentieth century. Those willing to invest time and effort into this collection will undoubtedly be influenced in one direction or another by its arguments. This is a worthwhile read for both believers and atheists alike, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
