Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Association of Human and Bovine Tuberculosis The following pages are devoted to the republication of some old papers presented to the medical profession during the past ten years. The reprint from the medical journals, from 5,000 to 7,000 of each, have been exhausted (as they were given away). Requests for some of the articles are still coming in; hence, the reproduction in book form. There is no claim that these magazine essays are of sufficient importance to be preserved in a bound volume; but as the subject-matter is one that is now attracting, as it deserves, an increased public attention, it may be that some of the arguments and alleged facts here presented may be deemed worthy of controversy, and thus lead to the truth, which has been one of the desires of the author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human and Bovine Tuberculosis I have quoted these experiments at length for the reason that they seem Often to be overlooked, and for the further reason that they have recently been directly misquoted. Koch said in his address before the British Con gress on Tuberculosis, If one studies the older literature of the subject, and collects the reports of the numerous experiments that were made in former times by Chauveau, Gunther and Harms, Bollinger and others, who fed calves, swine and goats with the milk and pieces of the lungs Of tuber cular cattle, we find these always fell ill Of tuberculosis, whereas those that received human material with their food did not. Bollinger in 1879 inoculated a young calf in the peritoneal cavity with material from a human lung. When killed after seven months the mesentery and peritoneal covering of the spleen presented a number of tumors from the size of a pea to that of a walnut and which microscopically were identical with those found in pearly disease under natural conditions. The retro peritoneal and mesenteric glands were tuberculous also. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Antituberculosis Chemotherapy

  • Author : Peter R. Donald
  • Publisher : Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 3805596278
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Antituberculosis Chemotherapy written by Peter R. Donald and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major infectious diseases of mankind although drugs for its treatment have been available for nearly 60 years. The standard short-course 6-month regimen used since about 1980 has helped to save millions of lives, but co-infection with HIV has had a devastating effect on the epidemic, and multidrug-resistant TB is a growing problem, particularly in communities with a high incidence of HIV. Following the declaration by the WHO in the early 1990s that TB was a 'global health emergency', interest in TB research and the development of new drugs has increased significantly. This volume reviews anti-TB chemotherapy with the emphasis on the actions and pharmacology of existing drugs and the development and evaluation of new agents. A close look is taken at new research regarding our existing drugs by some of the best-known specialists in the field, and historical aspects of these agents are reviewed from a modern perspective. The prospects for the introduction of new drugs and different approaches of how to assess them in adults and in children are discussed in detail. Several papers address the problems associated with drug resistance, its spread and diagnosis. Compiled by two editors from Cape Town, which has a particularly high incidence of TB and is a centre of tuberculosis research, this publication is an indispensable reference for anyone involved in the management of TB either as a researcher, clinician or administrator, and those working in drug development.

  • Pages : 349 pages

Download or read book Spitting Blood written by Helen Bynum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few diseases have been more inextricably linked with our past than tuberculosis. The ancient Greeks called it phthisis or consumption, names still familiar in the early twentieth century. They knew that coughing up or spitting of blood were bad signs. Through the Medieval Period to the modern day, Helen Bynum explores the history and development of TB throughout the world, touching on the various discoveries that have emerged about the disease, and focusing on the clinical and experimental approaches of Rene Laennec (1781-1826) and Robert Koch (1842-1910). Therapies included miraculous touching, bleeding, travel, vaccines, sanatoria, open-air therapy, and surgery, although none proved successful. A real cure finally arrived after World War II, with anti-tuberculosis drugs, characterizing a new optimism about science, health, and society. Although concerns about TB faded away in the mid-twentieth century, the disease has now returned with a vengeance. Bynum describes the emerging picture from the World Health Organization of the difficulties in managing new drug-resistant forms of the disease that have established themselves in the developing world, and in poorer parts of large cities worldwide. The story of tuberculosis, it seems, is far from over."--

Book Biological Invasions in South Africa

Download or read book Biological Invasions in South Africa written by Brian W. van Wilgen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume presents a comprehensive account of all aspects of biological invasions in South Africa, where research has been conducted over more than three decades, and where bold initiatives have been implemented in attempts to control invasions and to reduce their ecological, economic and social effects. It covers a broad range of themes, including history, policy development and implementation, the status of invasions of animals and plants in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments, the development of a robust ecological theory around biological invasions, the effectiveness of management interventions, and scenarios for the future. The South African situation stands out because of the remarkable diversity of the country, and the wide range of problems encountered in its varied ecosystems, which has resulted in a disproportionate investment into both research and management. The South African experience holds many lessons for other parts of the world, and this book should be of immense value to researchers, students, managers, and policy-makers who deal with biological invasions and ecosystem management and conservation in most other regions.
