Download or read book Fragmentation of Natural Resources Management written by Lindah Mhlanga and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of the Defragmenting African Resources Management (DARMA) Project. Lake Kariba - located along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe - and its environs are a complex transboundary ecosystem with multiple, competing, and often contested resource uses. The book describes the current sectoral approach to natural resource management, the interconnections, and the need to adopt an ecosystem approach. It will be essential reading for students, researchers, academics, and managers in the environmental and natural resources sectors interested in advancing the ecosystems approach to the management of commons in general, and Southern Africa in particular. Download or read book Marketing and Consumption of Fish in Eastern and Southern Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven country case studies of fish marketing and distribution patterns are presented in this collection. Country studies of Burundi, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe were prepared in accordance with a recommendation of the Technical Consultation on Aquaculture and Human Nutrition (Maseru, Lesotho, 5-8 June 1989). The selected countries represent a considerable range of circumstances in terms of such dimensions as territorial extent, access to marine or freshwater resources, domestic production capcities, and traditions of fisheries and fish consumption. An introductory overview chapter provides a summary account based on the format used for each of the case presentations, and sets out general recommendations for further development action on a region-wide basis.
Download or read book Management of River Basins and Dams written by M.J. Tumbare and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zambezi river basin is the fourth largest river basin in Africa and drains a total of some 1350.000 square km. The basin drains eight countries: Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The river flows over the famous Victoria Falls into the third largest artificial lake in the world: Lake Kariba. The Zambezi Basin is rich in natural resources and has a large hydro-power potential. This volume contains 37 papers which have been published in international journals, or presented at international conferences by the Zambezi River Authority staff. The topics covered include: Dam Safety, Rehabilitation and Maintenance, Environment and Health, Hydrology, Limnology, Information Systems, Water Resource Management, Hydropower Development and Socio-Economic Issues.

Download or read book A review of major river basins and large lakes relevant to inland fisheries written by Ainsworth, R., Cowx, I.G., Funge-Smith, S.J. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review presents summary information on 45 river and great lake basins of the world, which support inland fisheries. The information presented is drawn from published information in peer-reviewed journals as well as grey literature. Each basin summary is presented in a common format, covering the description of the fishery, estimates of catch and numbers of people engaged in the fishery, important biodiversity features and threats to the fishery. An analysis of the replacement costs of inland fish of the basin is also presented. This is expressed in terms of the water, land and greenhouse gas footprint that would arise if the inland fish that are currently produced had to be replaced with other forms of food (such as aquaculture fish, livestock or field crops).

Download or read book Ecological Changes in the Zambezi River Basin written by Mzime Ndebele-Murisa and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of the ecological conditions and ecosystem goods and services of the Zambezi River Basin (ZRB), the fourth largest river in Africa. Various environmental and anthropogenic factors; inclusive of climate, environmental flows, hydrology, morphology, pollution and land use changes among others and their interactions are considered as drivers of the river ecosystems. The impacts of these drivers on aquatic biota, river ecological integrity, and the livelihoods of surrounding communities are analysed within the socio-economic-policy context. The book goes beyond the usual inventories and basic research by using the comparative research method (CRM) in a trans-disciplinary manner. This CRM analytical approach in this book seeks to interrogate the differences or similarities in socio-economic systems, livelihoods, ecological systems, ecosystem goods and services, their usage and management under the seemingly different cultural, socio-economic conditions expected across boarders that are within the ZRB. The multidisciplinary approach also connects the typical ecological research with social dimensions in a holistic manner. The book therefore, provides empirical and research based evidence to support strategic planning and policy development in the wake of ecological changes that nations and indeed regions such as the ZRB are grappling with while seeking to sustainably manage precious river systems.
Download or read book Crossing the Zambezi written by JoAnn McGregor and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of claims to the Zambezi, focussed on the stretch of the river extending from the Victoria Falls downstream into Lake Kariba, which today constitutes the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is a story of 150 years of conflict over the changing landscape of the river, in which the tension between the Zambezi's 'river people' and more powerful others has been central. The Zambezi is one of Africa's longest and most important rivers - securing access to its waters and control over its banks, traffic and commerce were crucial political priorities for leaders of precolonial states no less than their colonial and postcolonial successors. The book is about the ways in which the course of the Zambezi has shaped history, its shifting role as link, barrier or conduit, the political, economic and cultural uses of the technological projects that have transformed the landscape, and their legacies in the conflicts of today. By investigating how the claims made today by Zambezi 'river people' relate to longer history of claims and appropriations, the book contributes to long-standing debates over the relationship between geography and history, landscape and power. JOANN MCGREGOR is a Lecturer in Geography at University College London
