Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, brings to print a collection of past ignored feedback social topics & issues, that had appeared in news media outlets at the time. That feedback response from the author, also brought new information to those unresolved issues, that continuously plague every Nation & every generation. They do require patient study, as they are written from a spiritual understanding of the subject matter. Because the present information coming out Education & all Communication Mediums, is incomplete. It only contains the physical sourced facts in its content and not, the spiritual sourced facts that underwrite all physical facts…including life. Until mankind finds a solution to address that shortcoming in our existing acquired knowledge, we will not solve the social issues contained in this book. Along with many other unresolved world problems…that unknowingly, mankind has also created into perpetuity. A growing chaos, that is also preventing mankind from creating a Unified World of Nations. A Crossroads of Information in the title of this book, is to indicate that the Articles contained in it, are written from a spiritual understanding of their subject matter. Not just a physical understanding of the subject matter. Because physical and spiritual, are two sides of the same coin of life. One visible and known and one invisible and unknown. Until the physical path of knowledge merges with the spiritual path of knowledge in our education systems, then life, knowledge and education, is incomplete in its understanding. Therefore, so are we as human beings.

Book excerpt: Ross, Alf. On Law and Justice. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1959. xi, 383 pp. Reprint available December 2004 by the Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-488-6. Cloth. $90. * In this influential and oft-cited study Ross discounted the theories of natural law, positivism and legal realism. In their stead, he proposed the abandonment of "ought-propositions" for the "is-propositions" employed by other empirical sciences, thereby envisioning lawyers that serve merely as "rational technologists." Less bound by tradition, and traditional notions of justice, jurisprudence then becomes "not only a beautiful mental activity per se, but also an instrument which may benefit any lawyer who wants to understand what he is doing and why" (Preface).

Book excerpt: Few small towns in America have as colorful a history as that of Woodstock in Ulster County, New York. Set in a countryside of exceptional natural beauty, Woodstock from the first embodied the most enduring characteristics of the Catskills and the Hudson Valley. From the early days of Indians, trappers, farmers, and land barons, to the present day of rock musicians, craftspeople, and refugees from the urban scene, Alf Evers's extraordinary history tells the tale of a very special American place.Long before the Woodstock Festival put the name of Woodstock Village on the map and drew young people from all over the world, Woodstock had an earlier incarnation in which free-thinking ideas held sway. In 1902, inspired by the social philosophy of John Ruskin and William Morris, three men--Hervey White, Ralph Whitehead, and Bolton Coit Brown-- brought their Utopian vision to the Catskills, looking for a place to settle. With a number of requirements in mind, they came upon this small hamlet set in the mountains on a tract of land given to Robert Livingston. They decided unanimously that it was here that "man's mightiest creative energies might be released," and they would feel free to pursue their talents while living in a self-sufficient community. The "earthly paradise" they discovered was, of course, the cheerful, industrious, and well-kept town of Woodstock, and in it they built their historic new society. From the 1920s on, the town was known as a familiar art and cultural center, with two competing communities--Byrdcliffe and Maverick--working to develop a style of life that would integrate arts and crafts with advanced social ideas. Following these early American bohemians came the Yippies and Beat artists of the Fifties and the "Woodstock Generation" of the Sixties. The conflict between the more traditional town, the conservative agricultural community, and the exiles from Greenwich Village, the artisans of the craft colony, waxed and waned with each new generation, each side vigorously defending a way of life and inevitably benefitting from the continuing existence of the other.Woodstock: History of an American Town is the result of fifteen years of research by the distinguished local historian Alf Evers. His previous work, The Catskills, prepared the groundwork for the present and more detailed study of a village which became one of the most famous towns in America. It is, in many ways, the story of the birth, growth, and coming of age of the American way in its evocation of the early pioneer values of individualism and self-sufficiency with those of the community and commonweal. It is a captivating tale.

Book Adivasis and the State

Download or read book Adivasis and the State written by Alf Gunvald Nilsen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Adivasis and the State, Alf Gunvald Nilsen presents a major study of how subalternity is both constituted and contested through state-society relations in the Bhil heartland of western India. The book unravels the historical processes that subordinated Bhil Adivasi communities to the everyday tyranny of the state and investigates how social movements have mobilised to reclaim citizenship. In doing so, the book also reveals how collective action from below transform the meanings of governmental categories, legal frameworks, and universalising vocabularies of democracy. At the core of the book lies a concern with understanding the dialectics of power and resistance that give form and direction to the political economy of democracy and development in contemporary India. Towards this end, Adivasis and the State contributes a sustained and nuanced Gramscian analysis of hegemony in order to interrogate the possibilities and limits of subaltern political engagement with state structures.
