William Blake (1757–1827) is a universal artist—an inspiration to musicians, poets, performers, and visual artists worldwide. By combining his poetry and images on the page through radical printing techniques, Blake created some of the most striking and enduring images in art. His personal struggles in a period of political terror and oppression; creativity, inventiveness, and technical innovation; and vision and political commitment keep his work relevant today. Featuring over 130 color images, this accessible yet comprehensive introduction to Blake’s achievements and ambition includes discussions of his legacy in America; relationship to the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque artists who preceded him; visionary imagination; and unparalleled skill as a printmaker.

Download or read book William Blake and the Art of Engraving written by Mei-Ying Sung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sung closely examines William Blake’s extant engraved copper plates and arrives at a new interpretation of his working process. This belies the Romantic ideal that the acts of conception and execution are simultaneous in the creative process.

Book William Blake s Printed Paintings

Download or read book William Blake s Printed Paintings written by Joseph Viscomi and published by Paul Mellon Centre. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth examination of William Blake's glorious and acclaimed series of twelve monoprints Among William Blake's (1757-1827) most widely recognized and highly regarded works as an artist are twelve color printed drawings, or monoprints, conceived and executed in 1795. This book investigates these masterworks, explaining Blake's technique--one he essentially reinvented, unaware of 17th-century precursors--to show that these works were produced as paintings, and played a crucial role in Blake's development as a painter. Using material and historical analyses, Joseph Viscomi argues that the monoprints were created as autonomous paintings rather than as illustrations for Blake's books with an intended viewing order. Enlivened with bountiful illustrations, the text approaches the works within the context of their time, not divorced from ideas expressed in Blake's writings but not illustrative of or determined by those writings.

Download or read book William Blake Masterpieces of Art written by Michael Kerrigan and published by Flame Tree Illustrated. This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition of William Blake in the popular Masterpieces of Art series. Rich and delicate, ethereal and muscular, the art of William Blake is as fascinating as the philosophies threading through his poetry and prophetic works. Presented here in this magnificent new collection, his vivid paintings and gently weaving illustrations are imprinted in the consciousness of Romantic art, but their impact on Gothic literature remains as strong and quixotic as the artist himself.

Book The Visionary Art of William Blake

Download or read book The Visionary Art of William Blake written by Naomi Billingsley and published by T&T Clark. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Blake (1757-1827) is considered one of the most singular and brilliant talents that England has ever produced. Celebrated now for the originality of his thinking, painting and verse, he shocked contemporaries by rejecting all forms of organized worship even while adhering to the truth of the Bible. But how did he come to equate Christianity with art? How did he use images and paint to express those radical and prophetic ideas about religion which he came in time to believe? And why did he conceive of Christ himself as an artist: in fact, as the artist, par excellence? These are among the questions which Naomi Billingsley explores in her subtle and wide-ranging new study in art, religion and the history of ideas. Suggesting that Blake expresses through his representations of Jesus a truly distinctive theology of art, and offering detailed readings of Blake's paintings and biblical commentary, she argues that her subject thought of Christ as an artist-archetype. Blake's is thus a distinctively 'Romantic' vision of art in which both the artist and his saviour fundamentally change the way that the world is perceived. In drawing upon contemporaneous religious writings and artistic representations of similar subjects, this book presents an historically grounded account of Blake's oeuvre. It offers new interpretations of his individual works while also identifying textual and pictorial sources that previously have been overlooked. It will have strong interdisciplinary appeal: to intellectual historians; scholars and students of religion and literature; art historians; and all those interested in the vivid figural articulation of a uniquely English theological radicalism.
