Book Design for an Office Building Classic Reprint

Download or read book Design for an Office Building Classic Reprint written by Ramon Schumacher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design for an Office Building Ease of Access: Almost all access depends upon eleva tors and they must be placed so as to be reached directly from the street and only a few steps above or below the level of the sidewalk. Very beautiful entrances may be effected by having steps leading up to the door, but the public should not be made to climb many steps. All the elevators should be grouped and so placed that they can all be seen from the middle of the Space devoted to them, so that the first car may be taken by any person waiting. This arrangement is even better than having two group of elevators near the ends of the building. Locate elevators so that they will bring the public within equal distances of the extreme offices, even if those entering the building must walk a distance to get to the elevators. Although it would be saving in travel to have elevators near the entrance, it would take up valuable Space and if the tenant wanted an exceptionally large area it would be impossible to arrange for it. Book The Art of Classic Planning

Download or read book The Art of Classic Planning written by Nir Haim Buras and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An accomplished architect and urbanist goes back to the roots of what makes cities attractive and livable, demonstrating how we can restore function and beauty to our urban spaces for the long term. Nearly everything we treasure in the worldÕs most beautiful cities was built over a century ago. Cities like Prague, Paris, and Lisbon draw millions of visitors from around the world because of their exquisite architecture, walkable neighborhoods, and human scale. Yet a great deal of the knowledge and practice behind successful city planning has been abandoned over the last hundred yearsÑnot because of traffic, population growth, or other practical hurdles, but because of ill-considered theories emerging from Modernism and reactions to it. The errors of urban design over the last century are too great not to question. The solutions being offered todayÑsustainability, walkability, smart and green technologiesÑhint at what has been lost and what may be regained, but they remain piecemeal and superficial. In The Art of Classic Planning, architect and planner Nir Haim Buras documents and extends the time-tested and holistic practices that held sway before the reign of Modernism. With hundreds of full-color illustrations and photographs that will captivate architects, planners, administrators, and developers, The Art of Classic Planning restores and revitalizes the foundations of urban planning. Inspired by venerable cities like Kyoto, Vienna, and Venice, and by the great successes of LÕEnfantÕs Washington, HaussmannÕs Paris, and BurnhamÕs Chicago, Buras combines theory and a host of examples to arrive at clear guidelines for best practices in classic planning for todayÕs world. The Art of Classic Planning celebrates the enduring principles of urban design and invites us to return to building beautiful cities."

Book Architectural Engineering

Download or read book Architectural Engineering written by Joseph Kendall Freitag and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural Engineering: With Special Reference to High Building Construction, Including Many Examples of Chicago Office Buildings The author has attempted, in the following pages, to define and illustrate, in a manner as practicable as possible, such of the fundamental principles in the design of the modern high building as may prove useful to architects and engineers alike. While the technical press of the country has devoted considerable attention to many of the individual subjects here considered, yet the realization of a want of collective data on the subject of Architectural Engineering has induced the writer to present this volume. As more and more of the principles of construction are being added to the curricula of our architectural schools, and as many of our engineering students are adopting building construction as a specialty, it is hoped that this effort will serve to unite still more closely the work of the one with that of the other. The author would mention the efforts of one highly esteemed and dearly beloved in the engineering profession, Mr. E. L. Corthell, who has been striving for several years to see the two professions united by establishing an International Institute of Engineers and Architects, as well as a technical School of Architecture and Engineering at the new University of Chicago. The writer would also acknowledge the warm interest displayed in this work by his former professor of engineering. Prof. C. E. Greene, of the University of Michigan. Book The Architecture of Art Museums

Download or read book The Architecture of Art Museums written by Ronnie Self and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a building type, art museums are unparalleled for the opportunities they provide for architectural investigation and experimentation. They are frequently key components of urban revitalization and often push the limits of building technology. Art museums are places of pleasure, education and contemplation. They are remarkable by their prominence and sheer quantity, and their lessons are useful for all architects and for all building types. This book provides explicit and comprehensive coverage of the most important museums built in the first ten years of the 21st Century in the United States and Europe. By dissecting and analyzing each case, Ronnie Self allows the reader to get under the skin of each design and fully understand the process behind these remarkable buildings. Richly designed with full technical illustrations and sections the book includes the work of Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Peter Cook & Colin Fournier, Renzo Piano, Yoshi Taniguchi, Herzog & de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, SANAA, Daniel Libeskind, Diller Scofidio & Renfro, Steven Holl, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Bernard Tschumi, Sauerbruch Hutton, and Shigeru Ban & Jean de Gastines. Together these diverse projects provide a catalogue of design solutions for the contemporary museum and a snapshot of current architectural thought and culture. One of few books on this subject written by an architect, Self’s analysis thoroughly and critically appraises each project from multiple aspects and crucially takes the reader from concept to building. This is an essential book for any professional engaged in designing a museum.

Book Office Buildings

Download or read book Office Buildings written by Pranab Kumar Nag and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together concepts from the building, environmental, behavioural and health sciences to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of office and workplace design. Today, with changes in the world of work and the relentless surge in technology, offices have emerged as the repositories of organizational symbolism, denoted by the spatial design of offices, physical settings and the built environment (architecture, urban locale). Drawing on Euclidian geometry that quantifies space as the distance between two or more points, a body of knowledge on office buildings, the concept of office and office space, and the interrelationships of spatial and behavioural attributes in office design are elucidated. Building and office work-related illnesses, namely sick building syndrome and ailments arising from the indoor environment, and the menace of musculoskeletal disorders are the alarming manifestations that critically affect employee satisfaction, morale and work outcomes. With a focus on office ergonomics, the book brings the discussion on the fundamentals of work design, with emphasis on computer workstation users. Strategic guidance of lighting systems and visual performance in workplaces are directed for better application of ergonomics and improvement in office indoor environment. It discusses the profiles of bioclimatic, indoor air quality, ventilation intervention, lighting and acoustic characteristics in office buildings. Emphasis has been given to the energy performance of buildings, and contemporary perspectives of building sustainability, such as green office building assessment schemes, and national and international building-related standards and codes. Intended for students and professionals from ergonomics, architecture, interior design, as well as construction engineers, health care professionals, and office planners, the book brings a unified overview of the health, safety and environment issues associated with the design of office buildings.
