Book The Art of Listening in the Early Church

Download or read book The Art of Listening in the Early Church written by Carol Harrison and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did people think about listening in the ancient world, and what evidence do we have of it in practice? The Christian faith came to the illiterate majority in the early Church through their ears. This proved problematic: the senses and the body had long been held in suspicion as all too temporal, mutable and distracting. Carol Harrison argues that despite profound ambivalence on these matters, in practice, the senses, and in particular the sense of hearing, were ultimately regarded as necessary - indeed salvific -constraints for fallen human beings. By examining early catechesis, preaching and prayer, she demonstrates that what illiterate early Christians heard both formed their minds and souls and, above all, enabled them to become 'literate' listeners; able not only to grasp the rule of faith but also tacitly to follow the infinite variations on it which were played out in early Christian teaching, exegesis and worship. It becomes clear that listening to the faith was less a matter of rationally appropriating facts and more an art which needed to be constantly practiced: for what was heard could not be definitively fixed and pinned down, but was ultimately the Word of the unknowable, transcendent God. This word demanded of early Christian listeners a response - to attend to its echoes, recollect and represent it, stretch out towards it source, and in the process, be transformed by it.

Book The Art Of Listening Prayer

Book excerpt: This book is filled with information and practices that will help you be mentored and guided by the spirit, listen to God speak to you in various ways, overcome obstacles to hearing his voice, and align what you are hearing with the truth of God's Word. In this listening to god book, you will discover: The first thing to note about the contents of this book is that it does not offer some kind of magical formula. It presents a tool to use when you want to hear God or just be obedient to God's command to "Be still and know that I am God." The next thing to note about this book is that it is not an instruction manual. While it gives direction on the practice taking 4 minutes to hear God, that aspect only takes a few pages of the book. The rest of the book is stories about how this practice came about, has been used, and has affected the author, her family, and many people she has met. The last thing is that it is not a theological exegesis of scripture. The author is not a theologian. She is a mom, a wife, a professional photographer, a victim of abuse, a regular person trying to follow God, sharing the tool that has helped her hear God's voice on this journey called life. God uses regular people all throughout scripture. Let's not waste any more time! Dive in and start reading!

Sampson's uncomplicated, practical perspective will help you cultivate the two-way conversation with God you've always longed for. Before long, you'll hear Him speaking into your circumstances and relationships, expressing His love for you and showing you the next steps to take in your life. Don't settle for a one-sided conversation with God. Break through this barrier and develop a sensitive heart that hears--and responds to--God's still, small voice. "With clarity and humor, Steve takes you on a journey to the place of profound simplicity in Christ where hearing Him is as natural as breathing."--Bishop Mark J. Book The Power of Listening

  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2014-06-05
  • ISBN : 1566997127
  • Pages : 197 pages

Download or read book The Power of Listening written by Lynne M. Baab and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Listening skills, and the perspective gained through careful listening, are more important in congregations than ever. Many factors make attentive listening a significant contributor to healthy congregations. As we enter into a post-Christendom culture, the people coming into congregations, as well as the people in the wider community, are less likely to be operating from a shared set of assumptions. With world-wide migration reshaping our communities and congregations, diverse perspectives coming from varied cultural backgrounds are also more common. The breakdown of many support structures in society has created profound pastoral care needs, making listening increasingly significant for both ministers and lay leaders. Polarization over so many issues and the increasing emphasis on story-telling in the journey of faith are two additional reasons why listening matters today. Careful and loving listening nurtures care, connection and depth, which contribute to congregational life and health. Listening to God is another aspect of listening which is gaining increased attention today. Many congregational leaders have become weary of church as a business and are looking for authentic experiences of God’s guidance. Congregations are increasingly engaging in communal discernment. Many listening skills used in human interactions are also building blocks for listening to God.
