This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engravings on Wood Artists, too, manifested only a limited interest in drawing on the block. The obliteration of their work by the process of engraving it was alone an insurmountable barrier to progress in black and white drawing. The introduction of photography upon wood made it practicable to transfer to the block a drawing in black and white, a water color, or an oil painting. The result was that the reproduction of works of a very much higher class was begun, and a much greater degree of intimacy was established between the work of the engraver and the work of the artist. Nothing could be more natural than that in these circumstances the engravers should rapidly invade new fields and carry their artistic sympathies and instincts to the point of themselves becoming artists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Wood-Engraving N this book I have attempted to gather and arrange such facts as should be known to men of cultivation interested in the art of engraving in wood. I have, therefore, disregard ed such matter as seems to belong rather to descriptive bib liography, and have treated wood-engraving, in its principal works, as a re ection of the life of men and an illustration of successive phases of civilization. Where there is much disputed ground, particularly in the early history of the art, the Writers on whom I have relied are referred to, and those who adopt a different view are named; but where the facts seemed plain, and are easily verifiable, reference did not ap pear necessary. And others: nevertheless I am bold to say that in no work on engraving in wood have 1 yet found any signs of choice or sufficient judgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-Book of Wood Engraving: With Practical Instruction in the Art for Persons Wishing to Learn Without an Instructor In its preparation great pains have been taken both by explanation and illustration to make the subject clear and comprehensive, and to give directions for the practice Of the art so that a be ginner may be enabled to learn the first principles. It is not reasonable to suppose that a book of this kind, however full and complete, will take the place of a good teacher, but if for any reason a person desires to make a beginning without a master, he will be enabled to do so by heeding its directions. Book Wood Engraving

  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9781567922790
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Wood Engraving written by Barry Moser and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2006 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " From the artist whom Nicholas Basbanes calls "the most important book illustrator working in America today" comes a primer on the art of wood engraving, a pursuit which one can "learn" in less than an hour but which one can master only through years of persistence, dedication, and indefatigable energy. Learning to engrave a block, says Barry Moser, is like learning to play the piano: it is all practice, practice, practice, all teaching the muscles how to perform the basics. At first your every gesture will be halting, labored, and self-conscious; then at last will come the moment when, like Ashkenazy at the keyboard, you can forget about "process," about "technique," and focus all your mental energy on making art. "There are no shortcuts," warns Moser. "Mastery comes only with time, work, and repetition. A great number of bad wood engravings must be made before one can expect to make a good one. Once your muscles know how to do their work, once they know how to carve thin white lines into boxwood, your mind will be free to invent." There is a lifetime of knowledge in this book: how to prepare a printing block; how to think in the medium's properties of line, shape, and ink; how to transfer a drawing onto a block. There is advice, too, on tools: not only on gravers (burins, scorpers, stipplers, and spitzstickers) but also on lights (you'll need a good strong one) and engraving bags (the leather pillows that cradle the blocks as you carve). Here is how to ink, how to choose paper, and how to print. Here is how to fail, how to move on, and how to acquire the habit of work that leads to real achievement. Wood Engraving is an art lesson and a life lesson. And because it's a book by Barry Moser, it is also a gallery of prints and beautiful to behold."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Book Plates: Engraved on Wood The character of the Wood Block is distinctly appropriate to the treatment of what may be termed the masculine school of heraldic drawing, and which is exceedingly refreshing when one is tired of the finicky and laboured work of the conventional coach-painter school of heraldic draughtsmanship. The nature of the designs need not be confined to heraldry, and, as will be seen from many examples in the following pages, considerable success can be obtained in the treatment of monograms and other personal emblems, and where expense is an item and simplicity a necessity, the adoption of the Wood Block can be strongly recommended. To those whose tastes lead them to admire the more finiz'.ed and delicate treatment of the Copper Plate, the Wood Block with its heavy lines and bold effect does not appeal, and of course there is a great deal to say for the more refined treatment which was dealt with more fully in the companion volume.
