Download or read book Seventeenth Annual Exhibition of Paintings by American Artists written by City Art Museum of St. Louis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventeenth Annual Exhibition of Paintings by American Artists: At the City Art Museum, September 15 to October 25, Saint Louis, 1922 The Seventeenth Annual Exhibition of Paintings by American Artists, is, like the exhibitions of previous years, an attempt on the part of the City Art Museum to present to the public of St. Louis a collection of paintings representative of the best production of con temporary American artists. To this end, every rea sonable effort has been made to render the exhibition typical of the serious and recognized phases of American painting - those phases, which insofar as can be judged at the present time, are building the traditions upon which the art of the future will rest. To accomplish this purpose, reliance has been placed upon the judgment of no single individual or group of individuals, but an endeavor has been made to secure paintings endorsed by competent juries of selection or award, or other recog nized agencies. The paintings in the collection were therefore largely chosen from the annual exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Corcoran Art Gallery. Formerly in the Lipp man Collection, Berlin, and now in the Metropolitan Museum (fig. I). Bosch has accepted the monumental arrangement of the theme which we find in Rogier de La Pasture and Memling. One would expect him to grasp at the more informal arrangement pre ferred by Hugo Van der Goes. We may almost infer that the ver sions of Van der Goes were unknown to Bosch, whereas it is pretty certain that he saw late Rogiers Of the type of the Munich Epiphany. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Pictures to See in America It has been no easy task to collect data and photographs from the length and breadth of this great country; in fact, it would have been impossible except for the kindly co-operation of the museum authorities of the various cities in suggesting their best pictures and sending photographs for reproduction. I wish that I might mention by name all who have aided in the work and thus thank them publicly for their assistance. As this is not feasible, the chapters devoted to the various collections will bespeak my appreciation of their wisdom. Book First Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting

Download or read book First Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting written by Whitney Museum Of American Art and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting: November 22nd, 1932, to January 5th, 1933 American Painting the Whitney Museum of American Art is following a precedent established by almost every important art museum in the United States of holding annually large and imporf tant exhibitions of American Art. An increasingly liberal spirit has broadened the scope of these exhibitions so that in recent years they have assumed greater importance to both artist and public. Believing that there exists in New York a need for this compre hensive type of exhibition in which the recent work of American artists may be seen under favorable circumstances, the Whitney Museum of American Art has established a series of exhibitions of painting, sculpture and the graphic arts, so that each year will bring one large exhibition. This year we inaugurate the series by the present show of paintings in oil. To make this exhibition representa/ tive of the various trends in painting throughout the country one hundred fifty/seven artists have been invited to contribute canvases of their own selection. This is a departure from the policy of other exhibitions similar in character where the jury system has obtained. Also, the Whitney Museum of American Art will award no prizes, but has set aside the sum of twenty thousand dollars each year for the purchase of works of outstanding excellence from the exhibi/ tions. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Museum of Art Bulletin, 1993, Vol. 16 The coalescence of the progressive Young America movement and veneration of the American Revolution sometimes occurred, as evident in the preface to The Pictorial History of the American Revolution which states that it aims to exhibit the kindly prospect of the future, more strongly than the irritating aspect of the past. Immediately following this a contradictory View: The study of history can not be appreciated too highly; it tells to the youth of our country a story full of wisdom, and replete with many a moral - it shows the influence and success of honor and virtue that vice and dishonor go hand in hand together; and it excites them to noble deeds of patriotism, and calls upon them to do all, and suffer all, for their country. Ranney created First News of the Battle of Lexington, then, during a time which extolled the ideals of the American Revolution and the idea of American progress. The Revolution exemplified American heroism and virtue, while Manifest Destiny (a phrase coined in signified the aggressively expansionist spirit of progress. The two concerns commingle in a single event, the War with Mexico. The Mexican War was thelargest American military operation since the Revolution. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art Education and Art Patronage: In the United States Another fact which speaks volumes is this, that, with all this machinery of exhibitions, auctions and dealers, our artists are still complaining of insufficient facilities for selling. And this leads us to inquire into the success of our exhibitions. The large number of exhibitions and sales held during the year may be a sign of active demand, and of a healthy state of the mar ket. The test will be found in the monetary returns. At the last exhibition of works by living American artists, held at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, there were sold, out of 258 works, two small pictures, and the Museum itself expended a few hundred dollars on small sculptures. At the exhibition of the Boston Art Club, January, 1881, there were sold, out of 289 works by 181 artists, none. At the water-color exhibition of the same club, in the spring of 1881, there were sold, out of 475 works by 229 artists, 50, amounting to At the exhibition of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, Boston, fall of 1881, there were sold, out of 462 works (not including etchings, by 278 artists, four canvasses, amounting to $650. Things are not, however, as bad everywhere as they are in Bos ton. The two most successful exhibitions of 1881 were those of the American water-color Society, and the National Academy of Design, both of New York.
