This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art and Practice of Landscape Gardening It is not the author's intention by this book to give another history of landscape gardening; his intention is rather to record the present development of the art and his own relation to, and practice of it. The love of natural picturesqueness is of very modern growth in England. Its rise was coincident with that of the modern novel in literature, and of genre painting in art. Little more than a century has, with the aid of conducing in uences, ripened the feeling to a passion. Peace and augmenting prosperity have been necessary conditions for advancing the art. Book The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening Classic Reprint written by Joshua Major and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening I have followed Landscape Gardeners, indeed, whose practice has been merely to give rough sketches of their projected improvements, and then to leave their execution to others. But such is not my idea of a Land scape Gardener's duty, for in this way the Home view, or Dress Grounds, which ought always to be brought to the nicest finish, because they are constantly under the eye, are often left in the most slovenly and inartistic state; thus exposing the artist to censure, and occasioning disappointment and vexation to those who consult him. It is thought by many that, if the art of Landscape Gardening were more generally studied, the result would be materially to injure the profes sion, by destroying its emoluments, - that landed proprietors and others would design their own plans, lay out their own estates, and superintend their own alterations. But this is not my opinion, for I have generally found persons of the most cultivated taste peculiarly anxious for improve ments, and most ready to employ a professional man to execute them. And this is reasonable; for the same good taste which shews them what is wrong, also convinces them of their own inability, from want of practical experience, to rectify it. However, my object in this work is to assist in promoting a general taste for Landscape Gardening, and I hope my readers will find considerable assistance from a careful perusal of its pages. In them are suggestions for the Laying-out and Arrangement of both Park and Villa Grounds, and for the Planting of Forests, down to that of Flower beds. They will find, also, what methods to pursue and what to avoid, - what constitute harmonious beauties, and what discord. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Design in Landscape Gardening It has seemed to the authors that there is a real need for a book which will sum up, in a compact way, the most definite principles of design as ap plied to Landscape Gardening. As in all subjects relating to the fine and applied arts, very definite principles, rather than laws exist, though they are not always as easy of demonstration as the laws of physics and mathematics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Gardening In the following pages I have attempted to trace out such principles, and to suggest practicable methods of embellishing our rural residences, on a scale commensurate to the views and means of our proprietors. While I have availed myself of the works of European authors, and especially those of Britain, where Landscape Gardening was first raised to the rank of a fine art, I have also endeavored to adapt my suggestions especially to this country and to the peculiar wants of its inhabitants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1890 edition. Excerpt: ...planting site must always be broken up, and on the arrival of the tree, after the matting has been removed, the fibrous roots should be spread out, the tree regulated as to its best side and to its perpendicularity; and it should then be well packed with rammed soil, and the ground well filled in to the new surface. If many roots have been removed, the tree must be reduced proportionately. As a rule, it has been found wise to reduce the leaf area from one-fourth to one-third. Branches should be cut where there is another ready to serve as a leader in the place of the reduced limb. It would only be misleading to compile a list of plants suitable for stocking any and every garden, as each district varies in respect of its soil, subsoil, climatic influences, nearness to the sea, nearness to a town, its sheltered or exposed situation, and its latitude. Such conditions must be duly considered in working out the general planting arrangement of each place, independently of the grouping for effect. Nevertheless, it may be found useful to have a list of trees and shrubs suitable for special districts, and the plants, of which lists are given, are those that will grow, if not thrive, in (a).--Shade, or can be used for undergrowth. (b).--Chalky soil. (c).--Peaty soil. (d).--Exposed situations, or near the sea. (e).--Smoky districts, or those in the neighbourhood of towns. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter XIV Conclusion-- Concerning Colour-- Difficulty of Comparisons betwixt Art and Nature THE art of painting has been usually treated under four distinct heads, viz.: Composition; Design, or Drawing; Expression; and Colouring, -- each of which may, in some measure, be applied to landscape gardening, as it has been treated in this work. Composition includes those observations on utility, scale, perspective, etc., contained in Chapters I and II. Design may be considered as belonging to the remarks on water, woods, fences, lines, etc., contained in Chapters III, IV, V, VI, and VII. Expression includes all that relates to character, situation, arrangement, and the adaptation of works of art to the scenery of nature, which have been discussed in the remaining Chapters of this work; and, lastly, Colouring, so far as it relates to certain artificial objects, has been mentioned in Chapter XI. Having since been led to consider this subject more attentively, in consequence of a conversation with Mr. Wilberforce concerning a new theory of colours and shadows, I have, through his intervention, obtained permission to enrich my work with the following curious remarks: and as Mr. Wilberforce, in his letter which enclosed them, observes of their reverend and learned author that" he is a man unequalled " " for the store of knowledge he possesses, for the clearness with which he views, and the happy perspicuity with which he communicates his conceptions," so I shall give this theory in his own words.47 This curious and satisfactory theory demonstrates that the choice of colours which so often distinguishes good from bad taste in manufactures, furniture, dress, and in every circumstance where colour may be artificially introduced, is not the effect of...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Gardening: Treatise on the General Principles Governing Outdoor Art; With Sundry Suggestions for Their Application in the Commoner Problems of Gardening A thorough study of the principles of good taste in landscape gardening would be of measurable benefit to two classes of persons, - first, to practicing landscape gardeners; and second, to the rest of mankind. Such a study is probably more important for the latter class, partly because they constitute a larger company, and partly because they control the practice of the gardeners more than the gardeners' practice controls the public taste.
