Book Integration of Insect Resistant Genetically Modified Crops within IPM Programs

Download or read book Integration of Insect Resistant Genetically Modified Crops within IPM Programs written by Jörg Romeis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect pests remain one of the main constraints to food and fiber production worldwide despite farmers deploying a range of techniques to protect their crops. Modern pest control is guided by the principles of integrated pest management (IPM) with pest resistant germplasm being an important part of the foundation. Since 1996, when the first genetically modified (GM) insect-resistant maize variety was commercialized in the USA, the area planted to insect-resistant GM varieties has grown dramatically, representing the fastest adoption rate of any agricultural technology in human history. The goal of our book is to provide an overview on the role insect-resistant GM plants play in different crop systems worldwide. We hope that the book will contribute to a more rational debate about the role GM crops can play in IPM for food and fiber production.

Book Community based fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda monitoring early warning and management

Download or read book Community based fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda monitoring early warning and management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall Armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda) was first reported in Africa in 2016. Since then, it has become a very destructive invasive pest in sub-Saharan Africa. Its main impact is on maize crops and affects different stages of growth, from early vegetative to physiological maturity. In several countries affected by FAW attack, farmer responses have been predominantly based on the use of chemical pesticides. It is important to ensure the safe use of such pesticides by farmers, but also to promote and deploy an integrated pest management (IPM) package against FAW. Farmers need the right advice, tools and resources to sustainably manage FAW. This manual provides farmers and extension service providers easy-to-use information on how they can manage FAW in smallholder cropping systems. It provides information about modules for training trainers in FAW pest diagnostics, scouting, management and data collection. The objective of this training is to provide trainers and farmers with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to identify FAW and differentiate it from other similar pests; understand the life cycle of FAW; and, know how to monitor and manage the pest. This manual gives trainers the information they need in order to support and sustain an IPM approach for FAW management in their communities. The manual is modular and allows for updates in the future as more knowledge and solutions to manage FAW become available.

Book Chitin and Benzoylphenyl Ureas

Download or read book Chitin and Benzoylphenyl Ureas written by James E. Wright and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opportunity to explore a developing new technology in a single biological system, chitin, from the molecular basis and with the inter relationship of the utilization of benzoylphenyl ureas in effective pest agroecosystem management strategies, represents a new evolution for integration of knowledge in this highly complex area. The degree of great progress and interest in the understanding of the interaction of chitin uItrastructures, biochemistry, and the unique ben zoylphenyl ureas attest to the timeliness of this effort. The purpose of the book that follows is to provide up-to-date and well illustrated details of current research knowledge including the latest of research results. The combination of the basic to the applied aspects rarely occurs specifically at the levels presented by the international contributors within. The original contributions composed the symposium "Chitin and Ben zoylphenyl Urea" organized by the co-editors at the International Con gress of Entomology in Hamberg, Germany, August 1984. We extend our appreciation to everyone who made the conference an outstanding success and highlight of the Congress, as well as making this book possible. We thank the authors, especially for their excellent international presenta tions, discussions, and preparation of the manuscripts. The knowledge evolved from many areas in chitin research, as well as the intricate com plexity of successful utilization of specific knowledge involving benzoylp henyl ureas in system management strategies for insects will continue to be in the forefront throughout the world's agroecosystems; and hopefully this book will enhance further research and development.

Book Cannibalism

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 428 pages

Download or read book Cannibalism written by Mark A. Elgar and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the contextual and taxonomic diversity of cannibalism, this book explains its costs, benefits, and consequences for a taxonomically broad distribution of species from lower eukaryotes to higher primates. The authors, all experts in their taxon of interest, use theory developed for the analysis of foraging, sociality, demography, and genetics to assess the ecological and evolutionary causes and effects of cannibalism. The emerging picture from recent research challenges the view that cannibalism is either abnormal behaviour or an infrequent addition to the predator's usual diet.

Book Pesticidal Plants

  • Author : Philip C. Stevenson
  • Publisher : MDPI

Download or read book Pesticidal Plants written by Philip C. Stevenson and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-05-27 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global biodiversity and climate emergencies demand transformative changes to human activities. For example, food production relies on synthetic, industrial and non-sustainable products for managing pests, weeds and diseases of crops. Sustainable farming requires approaches to managing these agricultural constraints that are more environmentally benign and work with rather than against nature. Increasing pressure on synthetic products has reinvigorated efforts to identify alternative pest management options, including plant-based solutions that are environmentally benign and can be tailored to different farmers’ needs, from commercial to small holder and subsistence farming. Botanical insecticides and pesticidal plants can offer a novel, effective and more sustainable alternative to synthetic products for controlling pests, diseases and weeds. This Special Issue reviews and reports the latest developments in plant-based pesticides from identification of bioactive plant chemicals, mechanisms of activity and validation of their use in horticulture and disease vector control. Other work reports applications in rice weeds, combination biopesticides and how chemistry varies spatially and influences the effectiveness of botanicals in different locations. Three reviews assess wider questions around the potential of plant-based pest management to address the global challenges of new, invasive and established crop pests and as-yet underexploited pesticidal plants.

Book Polyphagous Pests of Crops

Download or read book Polyphagous Pests of Crops written by Omkar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyphagous pests are primarily agricultural pests that feed on economically important agricultural and horticultural crops of wide taxonomic diversity across the globe. They cause immense damage across different crop varieties owing to their generalist and voracious food habits. The advent of mono-crop culture in a huge area and the massive use of pesticides post green revolution have massively increased pest outbreaks all over the world. The Middle Eastern countries, African continent and even the Indian subcontinent is increasingly facing resurgences of polyphagus pests. This book compiles an inclusive account of polyphagous pests. It covers locusts, termites, aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, scale insects, gram pod borer, fall armyworm, thrips, mites and rodents. The book discusses mode of spread, enormity of losses caused, mechanism of action, and also means to reduce the crop losses. It brings together a unique perspective for researchers to learn effective pest management practices across all crops. This book is a reference guide to researchers and also useful for academicians and students of entomology.
